People who knew the lay of the land simply had to be stopped, it was a simple truth. While the elite four were known as strategic weapons in the shape of trainers, the head rangers could be considered to be walking intelligence. It was better to not let them nearby, and Kouji stood by that.

Roaring moon bucked as it sensed someone approaching from the sky, turning in the air within a moment’s notice to rush towards them, the dragon was ready for a brawl well before its trainer, Kouji had to stop them, or at least slow them down.

”Easy, curve in from the top, we’ll take the advantage that way.” He told his pokemon who complied and slowed down, taking air before choosing to fall down onto them, sky to sea; Kouji loved the ocean, and the seas, they were almost a natural part of him, that they blessed him.

In a way, it might’ve been Kouji’s day, one of those Head Rangers was right in front of him.

kali / female / intimidate / crunch, outrage, waterfall, rain dance, hurricane, thunder

He had to resist the urge to make a crack, but… yeah. Best they didn’t know. It could throw off their plans, then.

He also had the (mis)fortune of riding his temperamental Gyarados, Kali, today—it was part of the patrol around these parts.

(No, he was also not going to reveal his other status so easily!)

The best he could muster was an extremely unimpressed, “Really? I’d like to see you try.”

He did a quick mental rundown in his head—this person in front of him was not on the Rangers’ roster, so the only other conclusion had to be…

“No, really. Try!”

Was he egging the other man on? Oh, definitely.

This was fine, Kouji was happy with this kind of result, to be underestimated made his job a lot easier, but the same couldn’t be said for Roaring Moon, only held back by his trainer's hand.

”Let’s go fast, begin with Path Arc.” He told his pokemon, who did just that, hanging on was tight with these tight but confusing turns to attack his enemy at high speed. Acrobatics, it wasn’t comfortable, but it was a consistent and relatively risk free way to close the distance to his opponent.

”I’ll try, don’t you worry about that one. But you could just turn around, make it easier on us both.” He said with a smirk, regardless, he’d have fun with a battle against a strong foe.

The sudden closing of distance didn’t faze him. He blinked, uncowed at the sudden threat.

“Hera, move,” and with all the bulkiness that she could muster, the Gyarados then made to move aside—before roaring at the strange-looking Salamence not to contest, but to summon a Rain Dance to provide cover.

“You’re not taking me alive,” he hissed quietly as he held on tight to his temperamental Gyarados, waiting to make the next move.

Who knew what the other was going to do should he start getting too close for comfort?!

Battles were annoying.

As much as he loved them, reading the other was always impossible; matching up with move you didn’t know they were going to make was dreadful. It was never going to be enough to guess, but that was why he tried to take the initiative.

”Kind of the point buddy, alive doesn’t need to be on the cards.” He said with mirth as he turned around on his ride, Roaring Moon released the sound it was so well known for. ”Route pass.” If they were going to get some room, it was time to dance.

Dragon Dance, the sound of feathers fluttering, of scales churning against one another as it sharpened its focus, and strengthened itself with the energies that coursed through its body, Kouji was watching just a well.

Or the next, or whenever, even. Honestly.

There was a reason why he’d set up the weather to be like this, because it meant that Kali could now go batshit crazy with—

“You know what to do,” he hissed to the Gyarados as he dug himself in deep before the serpentine dual-type (how was Gyarados not a Dragon-type, geez) roared again, and then summoned a column of air; being very careful to not have it touch the water before flinging the Hurricane straight at the other who was airborne…

And hopefully aiming to unseat them!

The updraft was dangerous, Kouji could feel Roaring Moon struggling to keep his rider on his back, but that was fine. ”Acrobatics, we’ll ride the wind.” He let himself fall from his pokemon’s back, being thrown around by the wind for a moment until the tight manoeuvres his Roaring Moon made led him to fall back onto his mount and out of the tempest, a few scratches shared between the two, and a lot of dizziness for Kouji, but he held on tight.

Acrobatics didn’t end there, as the dragon used those same tight manoeuvres to make its way towards his opponent, a dangerous person in truth but Kouji couldn’t hope to gain any leverage if he didn’t do crazy things like this.

”Cowards survive, it ain’t a bad thing. But guess we’re both way too stupid to be cowards.”

At the other’s remark, he couldn’t help but let out a bark of laughter.

“Oh, finally, someone who understands that not all cowards are doing what they do out of fear!” he exclaimed, before pinching the bridge of his nose because the noise of mirth that escaped him was a little too much even over the sound of the pouring rain.

While the incoming Acrobatics was easy enough for him to see and maneuver out of the way, his Gyarados wasn’t going to have any of this lying down; before summoning an large bolt of Thunder to chase after whoever this was that was brave (or foolish, maybe?) enough to approach him.

The dash of thunder, the crackling of electricity was the only warning that Kouji got before he leapt from the back of his Dragon; the standing of his hairs for a half second before he leapt from the back of the Roaring Moon that got struck, the dragon roared aloud before Kouji found himself plunging toward the ocean.

It was a dangerous drop before the Dragon managed to catch him on its back just in time as he found himself out of breath as he got caught.

”Everyone understands that, idiots just lie to themselves. My old man used to say, bravery is a fool’s beer.”

He hated his old man.

But his Roaring Moon turned on the spot

He thought he’d landed a direct hit on the Salamence-adjacent creature, however the person who was riding it had apparently taken a backwards leap to safety—before the Pokémon-like creature had caught the human.

(It would’ve been a shame if the other didn’t manage to catch himself unless they wanted to land a painful death by crashing into the water now, didn’t they…?)

All this time, the Gyarados was still glaring at the Salamence-like beast, beady little eyes affixed on… on the strangeness of it all.

He couldn’t help but laugh at the other man’s remark.

“You ain’t a bad kid, you know that… kind of a shame you’re in with the wrong side…” he continued, before his Gyarados roared once again and then blew a powerful burst of waves in the form of a Waterfall towards the low-flying Salamence-adjacent… beast, thing, whatever it was!

“Have to stop you here, though.”

It really wasn’t something that could be considered to be fun; he could feel the soreness building from the terrible maneuvers that were building up; but he had no choice. Getting shocked would’ve been the end of him.

”Maah…I’m not as good a guy as you think I am, I’ve just learned a thing or two.” Kouji said as he went to meet the other trainer head on, Gyarados vs Roaring Moon, his pokemon had taken some hits so it wasn’t an advantageous one. Taking on the strike straight on rarely ever was.

But Jaw Lock met Watefall, a struggle as his Roaring Moon tried to latch one with a terrible bite, before his vision began to fade piece by piece, slowly over time before it eventually just began to fall from the sky. Kouji rapidly recalled him before bringing out his Salamence for real, barely being caught but this one took the wind out of him properly, feeling faint.
