Standing Firm

Guard duty wasn't so bad. Holding ground was equally important as taking it, and the task of guarding this unassuming cave entrance (and making it look way more assuming…) had fallen to him. There were more exciting parts to this battle for the tera tunnels, but standing around doing nothing was nice as well. Alba wasn't champing at the bit to get all sweaty running around everywhere again… If he had one complaint, it was that he wasn't investigating the tunnels himself while he watched over the slice of the shore, but it was what it was.[break][break]

And if nobody showed up to make his job harder, maybe he'd be able to clock out early…

There is more than one way to get around this island but at the same time, more that are alerted to her presence as she continues to scurry about like a rat. Thankfully, avoiding detection from the average person is as simple as using an Illusion to vanish into thin air, her Zoroark making sure to hold her hand every step of the way.[break][break]

And yet, their footprints aren't exactly something they can hide against the sands. The incoming sea breeze and blinding sun do little to brush over their presence, the gentle crunching just barely audible over the crash of waves.

It was almost too quiet down this corner of the beach, truth be told. Alba was starting to have flashbacks to his guard duty in the Ultra Deep Sea, somehow being tasked with the most isolated, untouched rift there was. Surely it wasn't deliberate…? He might not have been the most senior member of Team Rocket, but he still had some notches on his belt![break][break]

Well, it was quiet until it wasn't. The slight movement in the corner of the scientist's eye brought back his focus, and the faint sound of crunching brought his hand to his Poké Ball, unleashing his Galvantula.[break][break]

"Hey! Where do you think you're going?" If anything funny happened, he'd let loose a whole spider's web on this invisible force.

"Wh— Hey! Use Sticky Web, already!" Oh this was so annoying. Some invisble asshole throwing sand in his face? When he caught whoever was behind this, they were done for.[break][break]

As its trainer stood there, rubbing at his eyes, Galvantula set to work, letting loose a web of silk to try and trap this enemy in their tracks.

Placing her down on the ground, Xenos begins to growl then releases it all in a sharo bark, a Night Daze launched at the Galvantula for getting in their way.

Galvantula let out a hiss as the wave of darkness slammed into it, its compound eyes doing something akin to glaring. Though whatever expression of rage it was trying to wear on its arachnid face was completely foreign compared to a human.[break][break]

"No good, huh? Fine, we'll kick things up a notch. Electroweb!" There was still sand blurring his vision, but Alba could trust his Pokémon's eyes. Though not helping his situation was the way he was trying to rub his face without showing it to anybody. Another inconvenience wearing a mask brought… but exposing himself would bring a myriad more problems.

Well, to be fair, he started it first.[break][break]

The Electroweb aims to catch them both, but Xenos ensures that won't be the case with a few bold steps forward. And he'll charge at the Galvantula, claws ripping through the web even as the electricity burns his paw and shocks his entire body. A stumble in his charge is compensated by a heavy step to catch his balance, his jaws snapping tight as he grows closer to his target.[break][break]

Just seconds before he's in range to touch the arachnid, he turns his attention, twisting his body as he suddenly darts towards the sand-blinded man instead. Sure, one might call this a bout of Foul Play but in this troublemaker's eyes, it's the solution that will get this duo right off their case.[break][break]

Knock out the trainer and haul ass before reinforcements arrive.

If he's quick about it, maybe nobody will manage to see his actual face. Hunchback, Alba rubbed furiously at his eyes, trying to claw his vision back while a battle raged around him. It doesn't sound like their invisible opponent has been caught yet, but surely it's just a matter of time. Just need to—[break][break]

The sensation of something heavy and vicious slamming into him halted all thoughts; his mask tore itself from his hand as he fell to the ground. Though he hadn't quite been knocked out. Small mercies.[break][break]

His hand curled into a fist, clenching hard enough to turn sand to glass as Galvantula abandoned their trapping tactic, emitting a Bug Buzz in retaliation against the Pokémon that would attack its trainer.

When she spies it slipping right from the grunt's hand, she has that chance to grasp his features, noting that he... doesn't look like anyone whom she's acquainted with. If it weren't for the Galvantula now being locked into combat with Xenos, or the sand still in his eyes, she reckons it might have come off as a lot nicer. Still, the Zoroark is merely doing his best to keep her safe, Taunting the spider with a smug grin even as he winces at the ear-grating noise it makes.

"...Huh?" His voice sounds almost dazed, stunned by the question he's been made to answer. And he is, in a way. It's not the actual question that catches him so utterly, painfully off-guard (though it is a little strange). It's the way it's asked; the pitch, the tone, the naïveté that carries it, that makes Alba think—[break][break]

He'd been going off footsteps to find her, but hadn't they sounded a little too light? Or was he just doubting, chastising himself now it was so clear he was fighting a child? 'She can see your face,' his mind hisses as he peels himself off the sand. She is a loose end that can unravel his delicate double life with the ease of pulling a thread. He only knows one way to properly deal with loose ends, but he's more than just id, no matter how it screams.[break][break]

"Yeah, I'm fine. A little sore, maybe, but I've been hit with worse." His voice hasn't changed, exactly, but it's somehow aged, as if over the course of twenty seconds it's faced twenty years. Whatever anger he had seems to have collapsed under the crashing waves.[break][break]

"...You really shouldn't be here, you know. Especially not on your own." He doesn't seem all that interested in chasing her off anymore, though.[break][break]

…Galvantula, on the other hand, is more than content to keep shrieking bloody murder at Xenos, even in spite of a stern "Oi." from its trainer.

Arceus knows that this Zoroark really is having fun getting under his opponent's skin, but there really is no point to picking that fight. "You should rest if it hurts." A loose hand flutters over her belt, a Comfey popping out of her pokeball and providing a brief wave of Floral Healing. "You're going to get really badly hurt if you push yourself too hard."

"Being here is sort of my job right now… I'm not hanging around here just because I want to." With Galvantula still acting aggressive, Alba gave a quiet sigh before returning it to its Pokéball. It was sort of like putting away his gun in front of the enemy… but he was trusting her enough to see his face.[break][break]

"Don't worry, I'll be careful. And thank you for taking care of me." He'd been through worse than this, but he didn't have to overplay the tough guy card. She was trying to help him; it was better to be grateful for that, instead of shrugging it off.[break][break]
