Though, she can't really tell whether those yells are out of concern for her or despair over their own fate. It's only when she takes a moment to listen to the voices coming from the mask that she realises that whatever they think is of little concern to her.[break][break]

"Howard?" Her answer feels so certain when she actually says it out loud. "Are you..."[break][break]

She stops, looking towards the battle between the Snorlax and Probopass as Vespertine sweeps them both up in a Whirlpool. But then she'll continue, her strides more than enough to catch up to the injured man until she can kneel down by his side.[break][break]

The mask that he wears. It seems familiar and it doesn't take much for her to figure out why.[break][break]

The hands fell back, limply. After a few seconds, the figure started laughing. It was a tired, broken laugh, and seemed to be mixed with sobbing. The static in the helmet began to glitch out. Ayer was swept up in the whirlpool as the helmet let out a hiss. Howard's fingers undid the latch.

The Probopass let out a clang as it crashed into the beach, defeated. The mask fell to the sand at the same time.

"Hello, little lady. You're a lot taller when I'm sitting like this. Kids, I swear..." Howard's hair was flecked with saltwater and his face was scratched up. His body was bruised heavily from his meeting with Isaac Merlo, as well.

He moved his hand towards the sky, despite Eris's request.

"I didn't know it was you. You shouldn't be here. It's not safe. Little lady, you've been up to a lot of shit recently, haven't you?" The man's eye widened and he laughed. Damn, now that he was sitting down, it hurt to laugh. "I swore, didn't I? Shit. Here I was, thinking I'd be a good role model for kids. Guess you win that little game."

She jokes, barely blinking at what she'd probably deem as one of the mildest swears she's heard in her time. Something about this feels rather surreal, yet still right in its own way as she kneels down beside him.[break][break]

"Stop talking like you're dying." That and the way he moves his hand earns him a light punch on the shoulder. Then, a rummaging through her backpack until she pulls out a small jar and another pokeball that sees a Corsola popping out.[break][break]

"Help me patch him up." It's a simple request that gets Cori trilling, creating a cloud of Life Dew that they float over the numerous scrapes and wounds they can reach. Disinfecting and healing whatever stings, the Corsola is methodical as he waddles about his newest patient. Eris, on the other hand, is rather busy with the jar in her hand, dipping her fingers in and taking ahold of Howard's arm as she applies it.[break][break]

"Stun Spores. Helps numb the pain a lil." A really handy trick she's learnt from Eva Morales finding use in the strangest of situations. She tips the jar towards him so he can apply it himself to the spots that hurt the most. "You're still pretty beat up though. Sorry I don't have anything better for those bruises."

"Maybe so, but I know a guy who can make coins appear like they're magic. He'll fill the jar for me." Howard says nothing as Eris produces the Stun Spore jar for him to use. It was a method that was right up his ally. Forestwatchers in Fortree had used this method for centuries. It was archaic, but an excellent catch-all for numbing pain. Good thing, given Howard felt like he lost a fight with a washing machine.

A washing machine named Suicune, that is.

Chuckling, he waves away Eris's concerns. "It's fine. It's fine! Not your fault. Mostly, anyway. No, I got thrashed by a Suicune pretty bad. I would've won, of course, but I had to let the guy take a victory. Couldn't thrash a Legendary Pokémon. It'd be disrespectful to the histories."

Patting the Corsola absently, Howard stared ahead. Between the roughly cut Carbink and the branches of the water-type, his hands were scratched up. That wasn't new, though. His hands had always been callused from working stone and rock and sand. The pain was already numbing and fading away, and he felt like a new man. No, that wasn't right. New? He'd never feel new again. Blast, he can't believe he had considered attacking a child. Even if it was unknowingly.

What was Team Rocket doing to him?

"When did you get so strong, Eris?" The waves crashed against the shore. He wasn't referring to her battling ability. "Is Hoenn that bad to kids? Sometimes, it's like you're the adult and I'm the upstart."

"Strong?" The quirk of her intonation beckons him to explain himself, the way she softly plops down onto the sand beside him suggesting that she doesn't intend to move for a while.

"Yeah." Howard looked at her, feeling the numbing sensation of the Stun Spores. With stiff fingers, he tapped a ball, and his Phione plopped out. It immediately let out an Aqua Ring, filling the air around Howard and Eris with a pleasant sensation. Phione went over to Cori with Gemsly, and the three huddled together.

"You're strong.

"Strong, but fragile. There's this tradition practiced in Kitakami called kintsugi. They fill cracks in bowls and whatnot with gold to keep it strong. Only by breaking something can it becomes stronger."

"But it's still broken. Do you understand?"

The Aqua Ring is somewhat of a blessing that she didn't know she needed, the presence of the Phione acknowledged with a simple glance. It keeps her mildly distracted from the way Howard describes her: Strong but fragile and still broken.[break][break]

"Maybe." is the quick answer. "Things do get pretty wild out here."[break][break]

Even if Hoenn is only helping to keep her instincts sharp.[break][break]

"In Kitakami, yes. Elsewhere, not so much." Howard smirked. He appreciated Eris's insight on vague historical factoids. Maybe she had been listening while Howard ranted about the Industrial Revolution. "And I prefer the modern view. Nobody wants to be imperfect, we just are. That's neither good or bad.

He laughed again. Things were getting wild, indeed. Hoenn was basically a mosh pit where people fought to remain sharp.

"In Team Rocket? Sometimes. I just wanted to study the histories and archaeology, and Team Rocket was happy to employ my services. I didn't think I'd end up... here. It's stupid."

She knows how these stories usually go, how people get roped into the giant war machine that is Rocket. "Do they bully you a lot?"[break][break]

Bullying is a light way of putting it, but harsher terms really don't sit right on her tongue.[break][break]

To her, Howard seems like a nice person. Then again, a lot of Rockets do act in the same way when they realise she's a kid.[break][break]

"Only broken people want to break others." Howard shook his head vigorously as the island shuddered again. Team Rocket's assault was getting more ferocious as the first wave broke against the League's vanguard."I only want to preserve. Everything in the world is a piece of history. To break it is a sin. To harm people is a sin. It's wrong."

Everything about Howard seemed harmless. He hated broccoli, loved archaeology and history, and was willing to go on a bear hunt for the sake of knowledge. Could anyone who wielded a frying pan in combat truly be evil? At best, Howard was a mild inconvenience. Loud, silly, scared. Annoying, yes. Criminal, no.

Yet he felt like one anyways.

"Yeah, the bosses are mostly assholes. There's a few good ones, but you don't get high up into Team Rocket without breaking a few egg..."

Howard stopped. He looked at Eris. Realization dawned quickly. He returned all of his Pokémon to their balls, before dropping another one. The ball opened into a massive pile of bricks. They constructed a wall around the two, and Howard narrowed his eye.

"You were in Team Rocket."

Theo might seem chill, but he will get the job done if ordered. Amor is somewhat of a mystery to me, but I think he's pretty honest."[break][break]

Just what is this creature? Is it even a pokemon? She pokes again and watches for a reaction.[break][break]

"They say they're trying to change from the methods used in Kanto, but they're beginning to slide down a very steep slope." One that had made her hesitate even more so than usual, one that she hated going through all over again. "If you want to get out, you have to do it before they reach that point. Or brace yourself for the worst."

Team Rocket used child soldiers.

Child labor was practiced for eons in every region in the world. Child soldiers were used by some of the largest empires in history. Eris was approaching the age in which boys would be conscripted into the army. This was no different. It couldn't be different. Yet that had been centuries ago. What was the League thinking, sending her here?

Madness. Madness madness madness.

Forget what the Stakataka was. What was the creature known as Eris Halla?

The Stakataka dropped a block into Eris's lap in order to get a closer look. The individual brick blinked at her, alternating between blue and white. All while Howard silently screamed. Team Rocket was full of monsters, full of Cillians and Zevs and Jaydens. Howard was not like them. He was not.

He just wanted to preserve history.

"I can't leave. They'll never let me. There is no good ending for me in my defection. Even if I leave, my career will be ruined, and the League will never trust me." Howard laughed, almost hysterically. "It's over."

"There's more that are within the League, that are doing their best to fix what wrongs they've done. Or have simply just... gotten back as normal of a life as we can get."[break][break]

She's a living, breathing example.[break][break]

"It's not over if you leave. Just... an uphill climb. But if you never try to leave, it's already over before you even begin. It's not like the League is completely pure good either. There's murderers and also probably also people that have secret relationships with Rocket members. But you don't have to align yourself with the League or get all involved in their business, leaving Rocket is just like... saying, I'm not gonna help you with hurting people and breaking stuff for your own gains anymore."[break][break]

"I..." Howard sighed and leaned his head back.

Of course he knew those names. They were dead to Team Rocket. He had always imagined them to be illusions made of mist, intangible, yet real until you got close to reaching one. Dreams created to ensure that Team Rocket members would dream of defection and lessen their ranks. Several of them were to be killed on sight. Some were protected.

Dammit. He wanted to believe.

He wanted to look into this little girl's face and tell her that it would all work out, that he would leave Team Rocket right this instant. In that moment, too? He could do it. He could nod to Eris, march to the nearest camp, and spill all the information he had on breaching the island. Tips. Traps. Tricks.

All of these and more, he could spill.

It would set the organization back substantially.

But he just couldn't. He'd leave behind his colleagues that actually cared. He wasn't as needed as the people Eris mentioned. Avatars of living history, Gym Leaders, Elite Four. These were people who had gotten high into Team Rocket and could guarantee a place for themselves in League.

Howard? What could he offer? Knowledge? Nothing that the League didn't already have. Didn't he trade his eye for wisdom? How could he be so blind. That raised a question, though.

What could Eris Halla offer to them?

"You make a far better argument than Isaac Merlo." Howard's eye fluttered open as he stared up at the sky. "I told him a cruel truth about saving people from Team Rocket. He wanted to save me too, I think. Those people you mentioned... all of them could protect themselves. They all had something to fight for."

Howard began to cry, water leaking out from behind his bandaged eye.

"I-I... I wanted to believe in him, in that mercy, in that perfect world. But I could tell that even with that Suicune by his side, he was still fighting against something he could never win against. As long as that shadow exists, as long as those crystals haunt my dreams, I'll never sleep as a free man."

He looked at her, smiling weakly as he wept.

"I'm not as strong as you, little lady. I keep telling everyone, but nobody listens. Not you, mot Isaac, not Navy... Step over me and keep moving towards a better future.
