“INFORM lam logan OUR FLANK MAKES LANDFALL IN THIRTY.”

a league battleship cuts through the dewford sea. several such vessels cascade through turbulent waters but none prove as daunting as the myriad of flying pokemon above. like crows, they flock together, creating a murder that threatens to blot out the sun.

among them are the league’s AERIAL ACES: lam logan, freya morningstar, and angelo vestri, just to name a few. but wars cannot be won by mere individuals. they must move together. as a faction.

several flanks swarm the island from different angles. fernando prefers the straight forward approach, exposing himself at the forefront of the enemy’s vision. who better than he to persevere the first strike? after all, the heaviest burdens must be placed on the most competent of soldiers.

“twenty,” he repeats into his ear piece.

rangers and officers alike circle above his position at the bow. some, stray further ahead, scouting out the landscape in preparation for their full deployment. with such a clear view of the island, small pokemon are easy to go amiss.

everyone expects large, heavy hitters.

Rocket did, indeed, have "heavy hitters", but Naomi Sato was not one of them.[break][break]
No, she was small, delicate, and subtle, preferring to stay out of the way of the fighting in favor of research and discovery. Rarely was she called to the battlefield for any purpose beyond her passable medical skills or her far more useful scientific expertise.[break][break]
But things were different now. Nomi did not much care for fate, but certainly some aspect of Arceus's design had seen fit to push her in the direction of taking a more active role in combat, given that the Eyes of God had - for reasons she was still trying to fully understand - blessed her with power beyond imagining.[break][break]
"Councilman FERNANDO SILPH is heading our way," she reported into her earpiece, the comms system keeping her connected with the rest of Rocket's leadership. She was miles up the beach, stationed at a hastily constructed research outpost, looking through the eyes of her Unown scouts out at sea. It left her physical body somewhat defenseless, but she had been assigned guards to watch her back. Not to mention Valerian's dutiful vigilance.[break][break]
"I will attempt to distract him, but I believe back-up will be needed here. He is a force to be reckoned with."[break][break]
Nomi had first-hand experience with the unrelenting nature of the notorious businessman: after all, he too was an innovator.[break][break]
Above the battleship of Fernando Silph, Unown began to pop into existence.

“WE HAVE TELEPORTERS ON RADAR," shouts a trainer on the main deck.

an ORBEETLE in the captain’s helm has several spots light up. some of them, coorespond to the UNOWN’s positioning. but none of them can tell from inside the ship. they can only relays the information over their comm link.

to those outside.

“above us,” shouts one of the flying scouts.

fernando tilts his head up, squinting to perceive these tiny pokemon against the backdrop of a cloud skyline.

“dark triad,” he guesses aloud, already running through the proper procedure aloud. “capture attempt. permission to kill after confirmation.”

several pokeballs fly toward these UNOWN. some miss. others arc with good enough aim to land. but, if they aren’t wild, the pokeball will bounce, confirming fernando’s suspicion.

The Pokeballs bounced, of course. These Unown were not wild, but bound body and soul to their Avatar.[break][break]
Nomi activated the Tera Orb at her hip, the Unown-A above FERNANDO SILPH beginning to glow a bright white. Its body transformed into formidable rutilated quartz, its terastallized form now a beacon of glittering crystal. The rest of the Unown scattered - Nomi willing them to get out of the way through her telepathic bond with them.[break][break]
They made themselves sparse, using the cover of a hazy sky to their advantage. In the meantime, a frigid ICE TERA BLAST rocketed towards the ship, intending to freeze every droplet of stray ocean spray on the deck into an icy surface fraught with instability.[break][break]

unfortunately, doing so proves infinitely harder as the pokemon disperse without prompting. league forces scatter appropriately but such a small target makes their attempts drawn out and tunneled.

likewise, their captain does not flinch when their ship comes to an abrupt stop. the sudden chill of encroaching ice only stills his blood. cools him to an appropriate level expected from someone so pale. the perfect environment for the league’s coldest face.

“battle routine set.”

his MAGNETON remains behind him, scanning the UNOWN-A with its LOCK-ON.

Nomi could sense, through her bond with the Unown, that Alpha was in imminent danger of sustaining a critical hit. She grit her teeth, too far away to do much on her own.[break][break]
But luckily for Nomi, she was never alone. Not anymore.[break][break]
The Unown were a collective. A family. Because of this, Nomi was not the only one aware of the Magneton's deadly LOCK-ON. The rest of the scattered Unown began to coalesce around the Terastallized Unown-A. They linked together, forming a singular unit. Multiple eyes stared down at FERNANDO SILPH, regarding him as if he were nothing more than an inconsequential pebble in their path. Together, they charged a myriad of HIDDEN POWERS, glowing as bright white as their Ice Type comrade.[break][break]
Not even a few weeks ago, Nomi was having an engaging scientific debate with this man in the midst of a joyous carnival. How quickly the tides had turned.[break][break]
From the shore, Nomi thought, we could have been colleagues. It would do more good for Hoenn than this.[break][break]
The irony was not lost on her, given his dedication to saving the region. He had no way of knowing who he was fighting, of course. But still.[break][break]
It was, perhaps, something of a shame.

FERNANDO REMAINS UNFAZED AS ATTACKS RAIN DOWN UPON HIM. some of the HIDDEN POWERS strike true. the lucky ones even puncture sizable holes into the ship. but none do any damage to their intended target: FERNANDO SILPH.

for the UNOWN are not the only ones united.

today, the league operates as one. yes, they may bicker. some may even despise one another. but here, in the thick of battle, their purpose brings about a togetherness that only duty can. no matter what their views are on how to achieve their goal, the mission has always been the same.

the betterment of hoenn.

and while nomi utilizes the mystical vestiges of the multiverse to assail their efforts, fernando champions the power of this world. they cannot warp. they are not avatars. but they are people. men and women of human ingenuity. soldiers who utilizes the SLATEPORT GYM’s signature technique, PROTECT, to shield themselves from the initial enemy volley.

“second salvo,” he orders, unblinking as an ally’s PROTECT shatters around them.

Shields broke, but more held. The Unown assault did not make as much of a dent in FERNANDO SILPH's ship as Nomi might have expected given their collective power. She sighed, an all too familiar feeling of frustration: not with the prospect of losing, but because this entire conflict felt like a waste. Of time, resources, lives.[break][break]
As if to emphasize the point, a HIDDEN POWER was deflected back by a particularly strong PROTECT, and one of her Unown landed in the ocean below with a decisive splash. Distressed, Nomi ordered Kallistatus to go and retrieve it. The shiny Unown-K blinked out of existence, going in search of its fallen kin.[break][break]
"Back to me," she murmured, extending her consciousness out to all of the Unown. "We need to regroup."[break][break]
But she could do one final thing. Standing, she approached the shoreline, holding out a hand to the water. Spikes of jagged blue crystal grew out of the waves, forming a barrier along the beach that would impede Fernando's ship once it finally reached land. She knew better than to think that it would deter him enough to leave, but it would delay him. And that was enough.[break][break]
Valerian growled a warning, and a shimmering LIGHT SCREEN went up around Nomi, protecting her as she stood, exposed, facing the vastness of the sea, waiting for her Unown to return to her.

THREAT OF BOMBARDMENT is the proper response to any collection of enemy troops. likewise, a massive assortments of shields is the best way to circumvent it. but when left without either as an option, walling the great mass makes a good second option.

the ship has served its purpose. as long as they managed to converse their stamina until landfall, that in itself would suffice. the vessel itself is of no consequence.

“aerial units, circle around and dispatch as you see fit,” he says before removing his earpiece. “all personnel, prepare to disembark and land via pokemon.”
