LEAGUE FORCES RETURN AFTER A BRIEF RETREAT. the second wave of reinforcements are here to relieve the injured and weary. what aid John Sullivan is able to administer on site is merely a crutch compared to ample rest away from the battlefield. good commanders exhaust their troops and replenish them routinely. that’s the only way to maximize their value.

several flying pokemon and their trainers approach from the skies. the longer the skirmish unravels the harder it becomes to tell which shadows belong to scavenging PELIPPERS and which belong to the unfortunate pokemon rallied to do battle. a mid-size ship is well behind this avian vanguard, sailing at full speed but still unable to keep up.

Like a stubborn mold, the League creeps back in spite of Rocket's efforts to eradicate their opposition. From his vantage point among the clouds, cold RAIN kissing his neck, Cillian scowls.[break][break]

"League in front, heading northeast."[break][break]

He listens to the chatter over his comms, agents reporting their efforts and positions. It was deemed imperative that this particular force be kept from reaching the island, lest they sabotage Rocket's efforts to breach further into THE CAVE.[break][break]

"We'll engage," he decides, speaking for himself and for his patron who steadies them in the air.[break][break]

Cool winds blow beneath Shadow Lugia's wings, easily mistaken by the League trainers as a benevolent TAILWIND. At least until they strengthen, sharpen, twisting into a HURRICANE whose force seeks to drive their aerial force toward the sea.

NO ONE SUSPECTS THE WINDS OF BATTLE TO BE THEIR UNDOING. they charge in, head first, eager to establish favorable positions. but when they curry too much, the gale betrays them. turbulence buffets them, stealing their stamina and vitality for the glory of team rocket.

the most skilled, split, abandoning the sky by entering freefall. a last ditch attempt to regain any sense of agency. the others? swallowed up by a sweeping attack that pushes them off course. an effort that robs them of their control.

“fall back,” fernando speaks calmly into the comms. “we charge by sea. all, on deck.”

the ship continues, numerous trainers scattering into positions, each one ready to follow the slateport gym leader’s pre-established plan.

Like ants, they coordinate toward a common goal. Where, then, was their queen?[break][break]

The hurricane turns cold, its ICY WINDS encouraging frost to form along the hull of the ship that now becomes the primary target. The shadow of great wings fall across the deck as it passes beneath the lurking leviathan.[break][break]

Like the steady creep of frost, they are patient.

SUDDEN FROST IMPEDES THEIR PROGRESS. the ship lurches to an abrupt stop, unable to cut pass the malformed wall. several shouts wail across the deck and people adjust with great urgency.

some bring out their pokemon, chipping away at the ice that holds them. others, move to backfill their positions. like DURANTS, they respond to the queen’s orders.

“all aerial forces, scatter,” fernando relays as the shadow blots out his vision, “you will not be able to hold out against this opponent.”

a thrust of his hand calls out two pokemon: a DRAGAPULT and SALAMENCE, pokemon picked for their affinity to the league’s AERIAL ACES: angelo vestri and freya morningstar.

“lock-on,” he commands, causing a MAGNETON to scour the skies for the shadow’s source.

Large as she was, Lugia was no difficult target to LOCK-ON to.[break][break]

Oblivious to the threat of the Magneton, patron and avatar remain focused on their goal. The ice having done its job in stalling the ship, frigid air gives way now to the sparkling winds of a SPRINGTIDE STORM.[break][break]

Feelings of misplaced LOVE might cause some aboard to falter, their aggression impeded by this supernatural wind.[break][break]

Though their mission thus far has gone well, Cillian's neck begins to prickle with unease. Where was the retaliation? The aerial assembly retreats before a command that he can't hear, and the underboss worries this might be some kind of trap. Perhaps skyler dross and Kyogre were rising from the deep?[break][break]

Still, he will not retreat.

FERNANDO DOES NOT FALTER IN THE FACE OF UNTIMELY WEATHER. sakura blossoms may rip at his clothing and threaten draw blood, but he remains unfazed. mind on the mission. focus on the objective. a standard he expects from his pokemon as they come under heavier fire from the fairy attacks potency.

“cover us.”

zzzzrrrtttt!

the MAGNETON calculates their expected flight path, the speed and size of the opponent. triangulations that require time for the LOCK-ON to provide a likely success. but one built on confidence of its success.

when it fires, the ringing boom of the ZAP CANNON deafens all else. a boom so resounding that fernando cannot hear the own wingspan of his SALAMENCE.

they ride on the coat tails of the attack, using it as both an opening blow and cover for their ascension. an effort that will grant them a much needed advantage, and time for the crew below to accomplish their own objectives.

The smell of ozone is their warning, and it comes too late.[break][break]

It's followed by a deafening boom, and though Lugia attempts to pull back to avoid the blow, the efforts taken to LOCK-ON bear fruit. As she's struck hard by the ZAP CANNON, the legend lets out a thunderous shriek. Her graceful flight is slowed by the onset of PARALYSIS, and the duo that had been circling their prey are forced to adapt.[break][break]

Luckily, she manages to stave off the worst of it for the time being, still able to retaliate with a WHIRLPOOL that yawns in the ship's path.

THE WHIRLPOOL STALLS THE SHIP’S ADVANCE. constant shouts onboard designate new orders. many scatter as the vessel attempts a hard turn. not only does it serve as an upfront obstacle but it now distracts the MAGNETON left behind. it assists those below by firing attacks into the swirling gulf. anything ti dissipate the unruly waters.

fernando does not retreat from his advance. his mission is to assail their oppressor from the sky. his SALAMENCE rears its head upon approach, unleashing a torrential FLAMETHROWER. on the other flank, his DRAGAPULT launches several DRAGON DARTS.

With pain and stiffness in her wings, Lugia cannot so easily dodge the torrent of flame that bursts from below. Yet as Cillian activates the TERA ORB at his hip, the shadowed legend's deep purple hues shimmer as pink crystals rapidly envelop her.[break][break]

DRAGON DARTS glance harmlessly off the FAIRY-TYPE's wings, and she swivels with newfound grace as the PARALYSIS breaks.[break][break]

With a battle-cry that echoes over the ocean, she sends forth an empowered SPRINDTIDE STORM in retaliation.
