even in such a large organization, she often found herself amongst the same people over and over through no effort of her own. in large part, it had been what fed the belief that there were such things as destiny and fate.[break][break]

since the events that had unfolded under route 119, she had done some light investigation on those who’d been present–at least enough to know one interesting detail about the girl who’d approached her first on that rainy evening.[break][break]

now, of course, as destiny or fate might have it, here they were again.[break][break]

her face stung with cuts, eyes bloodshot from tears shed overnight. they had been at it for days. the war had taken its toll. yet, she pushed forward with a team of rocket’s science division, their equipment, and the forces that had been delegated to be their escorts.[break][break]

they moved in a small caravan. a couple of metagross strapped with weight and a slow-moving supply truck, winding through a glowing cave of crystals. her houndoom trotted alongside, ever-alert.[break][break]

”tori.” the weary scientist might have called her beckett, even despite her more casual introduction before. however, beckett was her father.[break][break]

if she was like him, it meant she was plenty capable. a blessing, as they were weakened, having suffered casualties and lack of sleep.[break][break]

Victoria had been active in this little war between the League and Rocket, way more than she normally would've expected from her. Perhaps it was because of all the discomfort she'd been facing. Either way, this was all a good distraction for her. It would keep her mind off other things. That being said, this was still war and this was still very difficult to deal with in and of it's own. [break][break]

"tori.” the scientists rasp and weary voice broke her free from her inner machinations, "thank you for joining us.” Her Lucario beside her barked a short response for her. Tori had been tasked to guard the caravan of supplies that was much needed for Rocket during at this time. "Of course," Tori said with a tired smile. They'd both hardly gotten any sleep and with the way caravans seemed to constantly attract the enemy, they had to constantly be alert.[break][break]

"I figured you could use the company." Tori jested, attempting to lighten the mood while the pair trudged on through the crystal lit tavern. "Have you found anything worth studying while down here?" Tori asked. Of course, she was aware they'd both had their hands full but, Lulu was a renowned scientist. She was sure the allure of new discoveries, even in the midst of danger, still called to her.

lulu offered a small, weary smile at tori’s cheerfulness. it was a rare energy in times like these.[break][break]

as for things the study, she nodded.[break][break]

”we’ve been studying the tera crystal, of course. these caves are full of it–but that’s not unlike the rest of hoenn, as i’m sure you’re aware.” everyone was, after all, who wasn’t living under a rock. and even under rocks, one could surely not escape the pervading dream mist that seemed to accompany the strange, alien mineral.[break][break]

”what really has my curiosity is the mystery of this island in general. what’s inside? where did it come from?” perhaps where other mirage islands came from and left to when they disappeared. ”and will it disappear, like the others, before we have a chance to learn more?”[break][break]

the questions could go on forever.[break][break]

”the last time i was on an island that appeared from nowhere, i wound up at the cloud.”[break][break]

Tori was by no means a scientist. To be more precise, education was the furthest thing from her mind. Back in Kanto she didn't exactly have time to really attend school. Sure there was some education within Rockets halls but it was nothing a formal learning environment. As such she never really developed a love for dusty books and sciences.[break][break]

Only having what was required in order for her to be an 'efficient' member of society. That was all her educational studies amounted to. Still, she respected the big wiz's out there. Those that found new discoveries as tantalizing as overwhelming strength was to Tori. They were needed within Rocket, especially because they were the backbone that enabled Rocket to continue the way that they are.[break][break]

So Victoria just listened as Lulu earnestly answered her question. All around them crystals bloomed and glowed in the cavern they were traversing through. After a few battles here and there on the island and the events they had encountered in route 119, Tori had slowly grown accustomed to this new phenomenon that was taking the region over by storm. [break][break]

Never enough to question it's origins though, that was for the Brainiac's. She just needed to know if it was safe and how to acquire and harness that power for her own benefit. She was a simple girl.[break][break]

At the mention of the island's sudden appearance Victoria nodding in agreement. Now this was something she had been considering and questioning. "Do you think it could have anything to do with those fancy rifts that have been popping up all over the region? Or even the distortions?" she asked as she kicked a pebble that was in her path. "Like it could somehow be tied to those...other universes?"[break][break]

Now this coming from Tori, was quite the thoughtful observation, all things considered.

the glow of tera crystal shards jutting from the walls and floor of the cave cast a soft blue glow across skin and fur. it caused lulu’s houndoom to spontaneously terastallize, startling it, for it had never happened before.[break][break]
lulu, not yet witnessing her dog’s rather beautiful transformation, continued their conversation without interruption. tori’s question was answered with a nod. ”i think it’s likely that their appearance has something to do with our world’s dimensional instability, which is also what has caused the rifts and distortions.”[break][break]

While they were chatting nothing seemed too out of the ordinary, which was good. Well, besides the cavern where they were traveling being littered with Tera shards illuminating their path. As they discussed theories a brilliant shining light nearly blinded Tori, causing her to stumble a bit. [break][break]

With Osiris' help keeping her balance she regained her footing, a nod of thanks given to her jackal companion. Turning her attention towards where the glittering light was coming from she saw that Lulu's Houndoom had undergone quite the transformation. Meanwhile it seemed like it's trainer hadn't noticed. [break][break]

Instead she nodded and continued on with their discussion. "i think it’s likely that their appearance has something to do with our world’s dimensional instability, which is also what has caused the rifts and distortions.” Tori hummed as she listened along, although a bit distracted. [break][break]

"Erm..." Tori interjected. "Is he...supposed to be glowing like that?" she asked Lulu as she pointed towards her Houndoom. Before more conversation could be had, the floor beneath their feet began to tremble and shake. Small debris from the ceiling of the cavern let them know that something unnatural was going on. [break][break]

"Careful." Tori warned as she looked around for a potential enemy ambush. That's when she heard it. "D-Do you hear that?" she asked as she whipped around searching for the source. It sounded like rushing water but she had no vision on it.

she looked up to see her houndoom glistening in his new crystal-blue form. his horns jutted from a crown of icicles. besides the transformation, he seemed fine.[break][break]

”no, actually.” reaching into a pocket, the scientist pulled out a single pink shard to show tori. ”the one i have is psychic.”[break][break]

her eyes returned to her dog, watching steam roll from his snout. “that happened on its own.” a pause, before she admitted, ”spontaneous terastallizaton is worrisome. the amount of energy must be much greater here…”

more radiation from more crystals, perhaps¬–or was it stronger for another reason? what was on the inside of this mountain?[break][break]

her attention immediately shifted to the sound of rushing water. when she could see none, she nodded, ”hear it, but i don’t see it.”[break][break]

for the moment, they halted their advance, listening. the winding, crystal-studded tunnel was a funhouse of acoustics, making it difficult to discern where any sound came from with certainty. most in their party became more vigilant, eyes on every possible route of attack.

The sound of rushing water was worrisome. Victoria wasn't sure where it was coming from but locked in this spiraling abyss with rushing water would spell bad for all of them, that much was for sure. But where could they go without knowing what direction it was coming from, or what it was. [break][break]

The ground began to quake beneath their feet again, rocks and other debris falling a bit a the cavern trembled. "Uh..." Tori spoke but before she could get more out, from behind them, more south, the rushing water made it's appearance known. "We need to move! NOW!" If they got stuck here they would lose the supplies that Rocket desperately needed right about now.[break][break]

This ongoing war between Rocket and the League was putting a strain on all of their mental's and their resources. They couldn't afford to lose this now. "ARCTOVISH!" she shouted as a bright light emitted from her pokeball. Luckily she felt more secure with these pokémon she'd been loaned from Cillian. [break][break]

Within seconds her Arctovish was out and preparing a FREEZE-DRY to attempt to halt the tsunami of water that was hurling towards them. It would buy them some time. At least, she could only hope so. "I'm not sure how much this will last!" she said as the ground continued to tremble from the pressure of the water.

for a moment, she wondered if it was a dream again, as she had heard running water in her dreams many times before, even recently. the wave that rushed towards them seemed very real.[break][break]

she had wondered if dreams could kill. she wondered it now too.[break][break]

there was more pep in her step than before. ”take what you can from the truck and run ahead! it won’t make it fast enough,” she called to others in their party, who proceeded to do just that.[break][break]

as they escaped, she returned her houndoom and replaced it with an alakazam.[break][break]

”stop the wave when it breaks through,” she told it, before darting into the truck herself.[break][break]

the fox raised its spoons at the freeze-dried wave, and when it broke, water crashed and sparkled against a glowing barrier, keeping them dry and allowing them time to flee with their important supplies in tow–both on foot and by metagross.[break][break]
