Birds chirped pleasant notes as Frank watched his companion line up a swing. A cool breeze tempered the heat of late spring, pushing fluffy white clouds across the baby blue sky. His Polo shirt and khaki slacks were more than enough warmth for the outing: a round of golf with one of his favorite clients.[break][break]

Frank did a lot of listening and making affirmative sounds while the old man talked. About the divorce proceedings with his batty ex-wife, about his much younger and hotter mistress, and about the upcoming vacation he had planned to Alto Mare.[break][break]

Long ago, Frank had discovered that if he acted friendly and listened carefully to what people had to say, then they spilled the dirtiest secrets without any prompting.[break][break]

"Aren't you going through a divorce right now, Frank?" the client asked, remembering for once that Frank was human, not some dumb, mute DOPPELGANGER. "How's that going?"[break][break]

"Oh, well, you know. A lot of waiting and negotiating."[break][break]

The other man rolled his eyes. "And it's always the woman making demands and holding things up, isn't it? Child support this, summer villa that. Women!"[break][break]

A brief, sharp noise accompanied the swing of a golf club. Frank squinted as he watched the ball arc through the air and land near the hole.[break][break]

"I tell you what, Frank," said the client as he started off toward the golf ball. "You get yourself a nice girl with big tits and half a brain, so she's only good for the things that matter."[break][break]

Frank followed, unfazed by the old man's lechery. "I'll be sure to do just that," he said, forcing a pleasant smile.

Back at home after the golf course, Frank found an official-looking letter in his mailbox. When he saw the address, his heart skipped a beat. At once, he was inside and dropping his golf bag on the living room floor.[break][break]

His Persian glanced up from the sofa, where he had been playing with a WOBBUFFET toy.[break][break]

Frank ripped the envelope open and pulled out the letter. Unfolding it, he read it carefully, once, twice, then three times.[break][break]

A broad grin spread across his face. "Rex! We did it!"[break][break]

He waved the piece of paper in front of the Persian's face. Rex meowed loudly in agitation before resuming his own entertainment.[break][break]

Ignoring the cat's reaction, Frank walked into his kitchen, reading the letter one last time. "Upon consideration of this case," he read aloud, "upon evidence submitted as provided by law, it is the judgment of the court that a total divorce be granted between the parties to this case."[break][break]

Laughing, he could not contain his glee as he continued to read.[break][break]

"It is hereby ordered that the marriage contract entered into between the parties is hereby set aside from this date, and fully dissolved."[break][break]

Leaning against the kitchen island, he breathed a sigh of relief. After a year, the amicable divorce between him and his wife—no, ex-wife—had ended. They had shared custody of their children and already knew how to split up the coming weeks.[break][break]

Time to celebrate, Frank thought. Putting down the letter, he went straight to his liquor cabinet and rummaged for a bottle of his best whisky. With his other hand, he fished out his phone from his back pocket and speed-dialed his best friend.[break][break]

"Damien! I have great news!"

Dressed in a bespoke three-piece suit, Frank walked down a corridor, the kind that felt like it went on for miles. That did not phase him, however. Why should it? All the years of hard work had finally paid off.[break][break]

He had been chosen as the next CEO of Edison Financials. Thanks to his efforts, the Fortune 500 company had seen tremendous growth in the last year. And his predecessor had primed him to lead it into an even better future.[break][break]

Frank walked through the hallway into a meeting with key shareholders. He flashed them his most charming smile, shook their hands, and reassured them with steady, confident words. They seemed pleased, even relieved.[break][break]

Frank walked through the hallway into a ballroom decorated for a gala, where he was the honored guest. Instead of a suit, he wore a tuxedo; guests swarmed him to offer their congratulations. He gave a toast to the future of Edison Financials and wrote a massive check to a charity for impoverished youths.[break][break]

Frank walked through the hallway into a car dealership's showroom. Only the most expensive vehicles of the year were gathered there, waiting for sale. He ran his hand over the black leather interior of a Lamborghini and imagined driving it through the streets of downtown Black City.[break][break]

Frank walked down the hallway of his luxury apartment, entering the living area. The massive floor-to-ceiling windows provided a breathtaking view of the city skyline at night. He sat down on the couch next to DAMIEN RUSSO and handed him an envelope.[break][break]

"For your parents. It should be enough to pay off their mortgage and put your siblings through college. Every single one of them."[break][break]

He kissed the top of Damien's head.[break][break]

"I told you I'd take care of you. Anything you need, amorino. It's yours."
