He'd been given the clean bill of health. At least, he was no longer on the verge of near-death or at the risk of losing control completely. At least that was what he convinced himself.

They are restless. And the more restless they feel, the more cagey they grow.[break][break]
Not with jayden cross, of course, because he is the source of their worries and concerns. They have resisted any instruction that they depart from him before his approved release from the medical ward.[break][break]
This likely hasn’t earned Fern any acclaim, or done them many favors among those they should be readily seeking to appease.[break][break]
And so, they grow more agitated. The unsettled feelings that rose in them at that meeting only intensify with the passing days. It crackles under their skin like the blessing of electricity that now resides there too.[break][break]
But it is fine. They are fine.[break][break]
And they snap to attention when jayden cross speaks in the quiet that has enveloped them. The reaction is instantaneous—the way Fern pulls themselves together into one piece again.[break][break]
“I’m okay,” they reply immediately, head craning to look over at him. Any trepidation they might feel is quickly swallowed up. “Do we need to stop for a moment?”

The days since that CURSE are all muddled together. If he closes his eyes, he can still feel the whipping feeling of snow and ice clustered together in that prison cell.

[break][break] But he can feel it's influence weighing down on him like a boulder. It's only the sight of fern delaney's teal-water eyes that lighten the load.

They can sense that nearness.[break][break]
So for the moment it feels alright, though probably not for long. Their fingers knit with his, and squeeze soft. And wordlessly, they look him over for any signs of overt distress.[break][break]
Pink mist curls around their ankles, sparse and unnoticed—for the time being.[break][break]
“Quiet, for now.” Their mouth turns down in a frown as they say it, maybe as if they don’t quite believe it.[break][break]
In places like this, nothing good ever comes from the silence.

[break][break] Perhaps, he should be more urgent. There were people within the tunnels, fighting against beasts and rubble, falling into RAVINES for the sake of their goal. Bombs blast in the distance, catapulting faraway against warships and oceantide storms. The League scatter like ants among the ash as Rocket pursues their inevitable, relentless victory.

[break][break] But here, beside fern delaney's side, Jayden can only feel the quiet.

[break][break] He breathes in INTERDREAM MIST.

[break][break] "Good."

[break][break] A pause. It takes all the effort in the world to focus on the soft warmth of fern delaney's palm against his, yet it burns away all the HATRED. Melting like freshly fallen snow in the first spring.

There is time yet to follow the rest into the mayhem that has swallowed the time here on this island. Time yet to fall prey to the wild fever of battle and its revelry.[break][break]
Here, in the shroud of blooming pink mist, they rest. And bide their time.[break][break]
Fern looks at him, worry lines creasing between their furrowed brows. “Oh duck,” they reply with a quiet, slightly exasperated sigh, “how can I not worry?” It is an affectionate sort of exasperation that pulls the syllables into a quiet lilt.[break][break]
Lily-soft and tender.[break][break]
No matter the situation or the urgency, they are this: gentle and fretting when there is no one else to look in.[break][break]
And perhaps it is because they are so impossibly pliant that the mist takes root in uncanny ways. With more ease than someone as internally guarded as Fern might belie.[break][break]
Around them, the interdream mist builds a world that is familiar, but unfamiliar to this place in time. Darkening the space around them, save for the fluorescent luminescence of glowing, plump mushrooms.

Fern's presence is a balm, on the ever-present wound that seems to be his own avatarship. Jayden does not quite understand it so well, but days spent in the medbay alongside Rocket's brightest minds have proved to be fruitful enough.

[break][break] But perhaps it would have been absurd to imagine that fern delaney would do anything but worry.

[break][break] After all, in their position, Jayden would not have been able to do anything different. He had not, in fact, after the events of the Ultra Deep Sea warfront. After the events of that dream-like Galar memory.

[break][break] Without warning, without noticing it, the world around them shifts. Jayden doesn't seem to realize it, barely holding at the fraying edges of his memory, but his worn SYGNA SUIT helps some. His Ceruledge does notice though, flames flaring with alarm at their shift, as it turns around to recall the memory that it too was once apart of.

[break][break] "I'm here," Jayden says instead, eyes focused on Fern and only Fern. "And alive."

[break][break] But would they be alive? For long? In this suddenly different world?

Their mindset shifts as rapidly as the world around them. Maybe the illusion is so great, that they simply just don’t have the time to register it as false. The Interdream Mist pulls them under the current, and there is no push back from Fern this time.[break][break]
Perhaps because it is the tide of their own mind, rather than the ghosts in jayden cross’s.[break][break]
They don’t know how they know that this isn’t the dream-like Ballonlea and Glimwood Tangle they lived out decades in, but they just do. It hums on a level deep in their bones, and they feel like a child again, but not. Like if they looked down at their hands, they would be smaller, softer. The ground wouldn’t be quite so far down.[break][break]
No, this is home. The real Galar.[break][break]
When means that they need to get through the tangle. Not to Ballonlea, but to the other side.[break][break]
To–[break][break]
Jayden’s words break them out of the sudden fog their mind seemed to slip into, and Fern blinks. The worry they’d been feeling returns, but their confusion and urgency remains.[break][break]
“We have to go I need to see him.” Their hand finds Jayden’s again, and then they’re trying to pull him through the dark, toward the break at the far end of the forest where there’s a pinprick of light.[break][break]

[break][break] They aren't in the shores of Dewford any longer, but they aren't in that fractured memory either.

[break][break] This is something real.

[break][break] They tug, and Jayden has no choice but to follow, quick-footed as they dart through the forest. His throat tightens with a memory — not the ashy, broken memories of a fake Galar but the clear, heart-tugging memories of an old reality.

They aren’t sure what’s come over them. Just that it’s important and crucial that they get out of the tangle as quickly as they can.[break][break]
Their memory, their cognizance splinters. They are not on some desolate island shore near Dewford. There is only this.[break][break]
“Da,” they breathe, tugging his hand more insistently, though he’s obviously following as quickly as he can and not at all resisting Fern’s pull.[break][break]
They break through the treeline like it takes no time at all to get there. But Stow-on-Side doesn’t look right.[break][break]
Buildings are toppled and crumbling in the wake of the havoc Necrozma previously wrought on the region. Is this what they have been willfully missing in not coming back to insist their da leave?[break][break]
Is this what Fern left him to?[break][break]
The apothecarist shop where they grew up is still in the middle of town. The tree outside, though, is uprooted—its truck cleaving a crater in the middle of the shop proper’s roof. “Da!” they repeat, more insistently than the first.

He can feel it.

[break][break] The way that their attention is pried apart, their memory fracturing and splintering as the heady INTERDREAM MIST fog grows deeper and deeper. Beneath them, the ground warps into teal-green and mossy grass, bright neon lights in the shapes of mushrooms popping up before them as they dash through the undergrowth.

[break][break] 'Da?'

[break][break] His fingers tighten around theirs as they tear into somewhere near. Broken buildings and dilapidated landscapes. Then a building that appears and Fern's heartbroken cry.

[break][break] "Fern —" he says, tugging a bit more sharper. "Lyubimy." Beloved. "What —"

[break][break] His words are cut off as a sudden, devastating roar rings in from that abandoned apothecary.

Jayden tries to snap them out of it, but Fern feels so far away. Too fixated on what crowds the forefront of their mind. [break][break]
Something unfettered and desperate crawls up their throat at the sight of their childhood home. Maybe it’s a cry or a wail or both. But it’s keening and pathetic as they tear away to yank open the door. “Da?” they blubber for their father, head whipping around for any sign of the docile man they’ve always known their father to be.[break][break]
What they find rattles through them, hollowing them out and crumpling them on the spot. “What happened? I don’t understand—why are they here?”[break][break]
There is no sign of their father, but there is blood. So much blood. And the electrical gleam of an Iron Jugulis’ eyes in the dark as a mechanical clicking signals its awareness of their presence. Rendered prone as it is.

[break][break] Jayden has never understood it, at least not in the way that they do, the connection that his partner shares with his father. Probably in the same way that fern delaney will never understand their duck's steadfast loyalty, his absolute dedication to all things Rocket. To the chains that bind.

[break][break] Because for everything that Jayden is not, Fern is.

[break][break] Freeing, like a sparrow out of a cage.

[break][break] But as Fern crumples to the floor before them, thus letting go of his hand, Jayden finds himself rattled with the sight of him. It is nearly enough to make that ice crawl up his limbs, nearly enough to make him unleash his rage.

[break][break] "Duck, it's okay. We'll find him —"

[break][break] But when he turns on his heel, seeing the electrical gleam of something raw and unfiltered, the admin tenses. Freezes on the spot, quite literally, as ice gathers with reckless abandon up his limbs.

[break][break] HATRED is so easy to come to him, especially when knowing that it is this thing that has wrought hurt upon his true love.

[break][break] "STAY BACK!"

[break][break] He isn't sure if he's saying to fern delaney or to the pokemon, but when that three-headed beast roars once more, his politoed stands to attention. The frog leaps forward with a HYPER VOICE that ripples off all the walls of the apothecary.
