What was wrong with Halloween always having an increase of missing persons reports?

What made this worse was that it was children who were being taken in the middle of the night, with no trace of whoever did it remaining when the panicked parents came to check on them come morning.

While human activity had already been ruled out (as all the reports he’d managed to get access to ruled out all of the known gangs that called Slateport home) the possibility of Pokémon doing it was… there.

Not as likely, but the possibility remained.

So, they’d called for assistance from the Rangers, and here he was. Ready to spend the evening in a stake out if need be.

(Word on the street was that there was some unusual activity happening around the abandoned warehouses of the port city, so there was that.)

As Laurence Anderson staked out, he would see something suspicious.[break][break]

A shady figure sliding open a warehouse window. The figure would pause, glance around, then slip inside like a mask would slip onto a face. In the darkness, three pokemon would also follow.[break][break]

This figure was Tempest, growling to himself with both frustration and worry. He was here on his own investigation. Little Anani had slipped away from her mother earlier that day during a trip to Slateport. Missing, just like so many other kids.[break][break]

So Tempest had taken it upon himself to find her.[break][break]

A shakedown of the local gangs and his own Rocket connections had pointed him to this corner of Slateport.[break][break]

As Temp peered around, he was unaware of the team-up about to take place.

“Huh.”

He was almost through with his coffee when he saw a sneaky figure darting about before opening a window and then heading into the very place he was supposed to—

Okay, whoa, hold up that was extremely suspicious—

“Nero,” he breathed quietly as he drained the last of the coffee, and a burning red eye opened from within his shadow.

“Can you check out who that is for me? I’ll follow you.”

The Dusknoir that then emerged from his shadow floated upward, before stealing along quietly and phasing through the wall—

And said Ghost-type was now following the person who snuck inside, while he had found a different open window to use to get inside.

This warehouse was abandoned, it looked like. Mostly empty, except for some decaying junk laying around in heaps. There was something eerie about it in here, though. Like someone was going to jump out from behind a rusty piece of machinery and put a curse on him.[break][break]

Tempest shook the feeling off and moves forward. A small flash light was pulled from his pocket, which he flicked on to get a better look around.[break][break]

All quiet... too quiet.[break][break]

All three of the Eeveelutions wish him suddenly raised their hackles and started to growl. They all lunged forward to try and surround a shadow on the ground, spitting and hissing and baring teeth. Tempest tensed, jerking the flashlight around in quick motions.[break][break]

"Whose there?" A hissed out warning of his own.

In the time the other had gotten the flashlight out and was looking around in a panic, Lars had managed to find another open window (lower to the ground) and had successfully folded himself inside before closing said window behind him.

He hoped that his Dusknoir wasn’t going to attack unnecessarily or get into some shapeshifting mumbo-jumbo while he went around the stacked up racks and shelves before appearing adjacent to where the other was shining the flashlight in a flurry.

“Turn that down, you might scare away whoever the culprit is!” he hissed quietly as he shielded his eyes from the sudden beam of light. Right then and there, he saw his Dusknoir from up ahead, signaling that the coast was clear… for now.

Obviously, since the reports said that it was nobody of human nature, he presumed that whoever this was, was here on a similar objective.

“Looking for a missing kid or two as well, aren’t you?” he continued in hushed tones.

Tempest, already tense, snarled and clenched his fist at his side. How dare someone come in here and tell him what to do-[break][break]

But a glance at who it was did see his temper calming somewhat. With a huff Tempest clicked it off. It had been a long, long time since Tempest had seen Laurence Anderson. Back when he was still a Gym Leader. They had fought their doppelgangers together in that odd ruin.[break][break]

Well, at least he could trust it wasn't some fucker trying to mug him.[break][break]

With that in mind, Tempest reluctantly listened and clicked the flashlight off.[break][break]

"Yeah. One of the kids from my tribe is missing." That was all he said on it, turning away. "You know anything? I heard rumors about the basement of this place."

“Well, they called the Rangers since they’re looking at a Pokémon… possibly a group of Pokémon, even… who may be responsible for the disturbance that caused these kidnappings.”

The Dusknoir had returned, before pointing to a certain side of the warehouse they were in.

“And knowing if it’s a Pokémon… highly likely it could be an Alakazam. Or a bunch of Elgyem. Mind-wipers, dream eaters… hell, it could probably be a bunch of Hypno,” he grumbled.

Either or. There were many possible options for the culprit/s.

“Nero, did you find anything?” he continued in the same low voice, before the Dusknoir nodded and then pointed downwards, to the floor.

“Looks like whatever told you about the basement was right. C’mon, let’s go… quietly. There’s a door over in that corner,” he added as he pointed in the direction his Dusknoir had come from.

"Hm." It made Tempest furrow his brows- but it was also a small relief. He had come in here fully preparing to bust up child ring. He couldn't guess what pokemon would be taking children for, but they would be better off that whatever a human could do to them.[break][break]

There was no point in dwelling on that, though.[break][break]

A click of the tongue. The three eeveelutions stepped up to his side, all of them side eying Laurence Anderson.[break][break]

"You heard the man, ladies. Let's roll." The three pokemon yipped and stuck to his side. Tempest didn't care to take front point- as quiet as he could, the door was eased open. Which, wasn't as quiet as he wanted; the rusted door screamed as the hinges were disturbed, no doubt alerting whatever was down there they were coming. Temp cursed under his breath.[break][break]

The darkness stared back at them, a wormhole formed on broken down metal stairs. Huffing, Tempest started to go down them, not waiting for Lars to follow.

In no time flat, they were at the corner of the warehouse that had the door leading down into the (appropriately) creepy basement, with him taking up the rearguard.

Almost immediately he felt the hairs on the back of his neck prickle. Like there was something wrong.

His eyes took some time readjusting to the dark, however the Dusknoir had already darted on ahead—before the sounds of a scuffle broke out between the Dusknoir and whatever was waiting in the darkness.

It… didn’t sound human, which was a relief, but at the same time it was also terrifying.

He could hear the sounds of a Shadow Ball being thrown towards something—and then the distinct noise of a ‘Hypno?!’ exclamation.

“And there we are,” he hissed, pulling out Lanvals’s Pokéball and then throwing out… wait a second, wasn’t he a regular Typhlosion?

Either way, it was time to attack!

Soon enough, the sounds of battle were echoing around him. Tempest snarled, only seeing the flames of his Flareon's Shadow Fire, the gleam of his Vaporeon's Ice Beam, and the light of his Leafeon's Swift. He left the three pokemon to beat the shit out of... whatever they were fighting, edging forward to try and find Anani.[break][break]

Soon enough, in one of the corners of the dark room, was a pile of sleeping children. They had been laid out on makeshift beds made of papers, leaves, and whatever else the Hypno had seemed good enough to use. Old and holey blankets, no doubt stolen or taken from the trash, had been laid over them. While dirty and maybe a little underfed, all of the kids were sleeping peacefully.[break][break]

"Psst! Ranger! Over here!" Tempest hissed out, trying to get Laurence Anderson attention. The stench of a gastro acid hit his nose, making his blanch some before he started to look closer at the kids.[break][break]

"I found Anani!" Leaning down, Tempest scooped the small girl into his arms. She grumbled, opening her eyes blearily.[break][break]

"Uncle Temp....?" Groggy, her childish voice was muffled as he pulled her against his chest.

While his Dusknoir and changed Typhlosion had gone to town on the Hypno… it looked to be a horde of Hypno, at the very least—the Typhlosion even caught one of said Hypno using Dream Eater on one of the kids… yikes.

With a powerful swat from the spectral Typhlosion, the Dusknoir had managed to herd up the Hypno by blocking off their escape route and literally holding them at ghost-point with a humongous Shadow Ball that would wipe them off the face of the map should they even try moving.

It also didn’t take long for him to run into the stench of gastric acid… it looked like some of the kids had been fed, yes, but with what he did not want to know.

“You found who you were looking for?” he confirmed as he quickly put the call in for the local Slateport Ranger outpost to come for assistance.
