The old man had three of these fishing shops. And, as the new district manager (hah!), Madeline now knew each of them smelled the same. It reminded her of old cigars, Old Spice, and paneled wood. Which was weird considering this shop had been built after smoking had been outlawed. While not on her bucket list, the owner’s request to investigate the worst shop came with a decent hotel, and a few days outside the shoebox she called an apartment.

Auburn hair shook as the woman tossed her head. “You guys suck at inventory,” Madd muttered to the cashier as she stared at empty shelf after empty shelf. “Nobody ever taught us how to do it.” The pimpled-faced teenager replied with a shrug. Though Madeline was now positive he was less interested in making sales and more interested in catching a peek down the front of her costume.

Something that she had never had to wear back home. But apparently, this branch had a mascot. Some kind of creepy, Sharpedo mermaid thing. Its scales were navy and its tail (which was dumb to have on a Sharpedo) was made up of tightly wrapped iridescent ribbons. The chest of this one was way too small for Madd—the top looked like yeasty buns left in the oven too long. Her Obstagoon was clad similarly, though only with a shirt and ridiculous blonde wig.

But, if she wanted these losers to listen, she had to prove she was willing to do everything they did. Which is why she sucked it up and waddled out to the nearby shore. With a mutter, she rearranged her top for the hundredth time, just creating pinching in a different spot. After a moment, she spotted what seemed to be a customer. “Come on, Yakky.”

Folding her arms across her chest, Madd came up behind the fisherman. “Anything biting?”

Leave it to Dewford to come up with a trend this silly. A bait shop doesn’t need a mascot. Idle hands, as they say, are Giratina’s playthings, and hands can grow so very, very idle in this town. So, they roped some poor girl into wearing that obnoxious costume.[break][break]
It’s good for him to be here, or so they tell him. With nothing else to do for the day, he has to take some time off. Sit looking at the horizon. Go insane waiting. In truth, he just wants to be close to the sea. There’s a new threat out there – a new monster threatens his coastal town. Another threat, once held at bay, come to reclaim these waters.[break][break]
It’s been raining more lately. Too much for November. At least the sky is clear today. That, in and of itself, is a sign. A blessing. So, he counts them. Smokes his cigars and cigarettes. Puts them out in the ash tray at his side. Elise Calcifet swears it’s from the royal palace in Galar. Navy’s not so sure, but he’s not going to look a gift ponyta in the mouth. Everyone and their mother wants to say they have an ash tray from Wyndham palace.[break][break]
Shuwen, his Urshifu, turns to acknowledge someone heading their way. The Urshifu has his own fishing rod. Navy doesn’t know if the bear can talk, as other legendaries can, but he chooses to say nothing. They sit in comfortable silence together, broken by a mermaid instead of a proper fish.[break][break]
“Not today.” He says with relief rather than the anger one might expect. “Not a lot’s been biting in Hoenn the past week or two.” Shuwen snorts. Navy glances at him and then back to the mermaid.[break][break]
“Haven’t seen you around before. You a local back from college for the holidays? Thought I met all of you guys when I moved here in the summer.” He makes a point of meeting her eyes when he looks, but his eyes seem more interested in the sea than the mermaid.

Yakuza moves to stand beside the Urshifu. With an almost childlike expression, he drops into a kneeling position beside him. A clawed hand gently brushes the top of the waves. Where he grew up, there wasn’t much water to go around. It definitely didn’t look like this. It was rainbow-colored.

When Navy turned toward her, Madeline froze in place. A small gasp erupted as memories rocketed to the surface. A nose like that shattered and bleeding. Her elbow was bruised by the impact. A rough bag is tugged back and forth between them like a dog’s rope toys. Then, of course, there were the eyes. Shit! Shit! Shit! What’s he doing here!? But, then, her mind picked out the differences. No, wait. It’s not him. Chill out, Aubre Junior. The jaw structure was off and so were the cheekbones.

She’d know. That face took center stage in her dream. No, her nightmares. But the panic is short-lived. People looked like each other all the fricking time. It didn’t mean anything.

So, why'd she want to run so badly?

Shaking her head to clear the fog, the redhead turns back toward the water. Goosebumps now cover her arms. “Yeah?” Those same limbs lifted to cross across her chest. “That sucks.” They shift up slightly. But, no matter how she places them, there’s an embarrassing amount of titty on display. However, that earlier panic is making this feeling more apparent. “Is that right?” She humss. “Maybe something’s scaring them off.” Last she heard, this place was crawling with all kinds of weird, ugly, physics-defying weirdoes.

Home for the summer, huh? A small, pensive small appears. A little too old for that, but the idea’s nice. “No sir. I never went.” She was too busy doing stupid shit to piss off her dad. Like joining a terrorist organization and pretending to like pencil dick. “They needed a hand over here, and I thought I’d help.” There’s another shrug. “It’s nicer than my place.” That little pond might have fish, but it also had mud and old crappy trees.

She takes a deep breath of the salty air. “So, you were here last summer too?”

He sees it in her eyes, hears it in her voice: panic. Panic is something he is intimately familiar with. Those who know him by reputation might paint him as some hero without fear, but he is nothing of the sort. During his violent metamorphosis beneath these waves, panic ruled his mind. Fear was the law of the day. Fear bound him, made him run.[break][break]
It’s defying the fear that makes him strong, he thinks, but that’s not a conversation for today. Instead, his lazy, nonchalant friendliness simmers into concern. Furrowed eyebrows hint at it, along with the tone in his voice when he asks an obvious question.[break][break]
“You alright? Look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Shuwen, who until then busied himself punching the water for Yakuza’s amusement, turns to look at him. The burned bear simply looks at him, conveying without words a silent message.[break][break]
She IS looking at a ghost, some would say.[break][break]
“Uh, anyway, funny thing: never been here before this April.” What a funny thought. It turns concern into a wide-brimmed smile. “But it feels like this is where I was always meant to be. You ever feel that way ‘bout a place? It’s nice, living in a place where you know everybody.”[break][break]
Another short pause. The smile fades into concern. Much as he hates this fact sometime, he is a public servant. It behooves him to give out certain warnings.[break][break]
“You watch the news? Kyogre’s on the loose. It’s got all the seafront towns spooked.” A beat later, his eyes grow hard, gunmetal. The same eyes as a boy who would burn himself out before he surrendered. “Not gonna get my little town. Not on my watch.”

The redhead is quick to shake her head. Then, she pauses—that’s not right. With a bit of self-admonishment she murmurs a desperate, “Yeah, I’m all right.” A bit of levity follows. A distraction. One punctuated by her picking at the top of her stupid costume. It suddenly felt like it was fifty degrees out here. She grins, “Only ghost here is you, John Wayne.” But, noticeably, she doesn’t look in his eyes again.

Yakuza doesn’t notice his trainer’s distress. Hell, this secret was the only thing the badger didn’t know. So, if he had, the Obstagoon would have been just as confused as Navy. Instead, he’s distracted by the punching of the water. After a moment, he joins in. The fish below seem to have fun. A few little ones dart in and out of the pair’s deadly claws.

With a snicker, Yakuza reached over for some of Navy’s bait and dropped it in the water.

“Since April? Damn. Why does that feel like like a lifetime ago?” Which, for her, it had been. Until it’d gone back to just being a few months. That time distortion in Galar still wreaked havoc on her circadian rhythm. Sometimes she still expected to wake up to a teenaged daughter sneaking out the window. As Navy continued, Madd’s smile turned sad. “Yeah. My uncle’s house.” Hell, no matter what she’d done, he always welcomed her with open arms. Aubre McKenna-Settentrione didn’t know how lucky she had it. “I wish it was here.”

The news? The redhead shakes her head. “Nah. My life’s hard enough without worrying about the apocalypse.” For the most part, that stuff didn’t impact her. It wasn’t like she was planning on reenacting Gilligan’s Island or anything. ”But I get why people are scared.” Still, if a god did get pissed off at them, she didn’t think there was jack shit they could do. Probably just piss themselves sooner and fight.

“Well, hopefully it comes next weekend.” The idea of being found in this outfit was way scarier than the murder whale. “I’ve got plans.” She was surprised to find her vision blurred by tears. Maybe that flashback had gotten closer than she thought.

Coincidentally, I’m Mr. Eastw-” The playful drawl of an old timer talking to someone still in the springtime of life fades. He sees the tears. Passive concern turns to active sympathy. Putting the rod down, he stands up.[break][break]
Drawn to his full height, he cuts the figure of a western hero. The hat helps. Ever since howard slayte crowned him with the thing, the media hasn’t let him live it down. It’s hard to know how to comfort a stranger, but giving her his full attention is a start.[break][break]
“What’s wrong?” His voice is firmer when he asks the question, concerned. In those tears, he spies a giant masquerading as a windmill.

The redhead listened with a soft, distracted smile. Normally, she loved talking vintage movies. It wasn’t new releases that excited her but the discount oldies. Though, if she was being honest, some of that had to do with costs. For the same reason, she often snuck in snacks and drinks. A harmless bit of rule-bending, Madd didn’t think Navy would like. “Maybe I’ll give it a go.” Copper eyes roved the nearby, conspicuously empty waters. Then, her eyes slid toward the nearby houses. “It’s not like this place’s party city.”

When he stands, Madeline slides a foot back. The heel of her boot clumps on the dock just behind Yakuza’s free hand. Half scared he’d done something wrong, the badger turned toward her. Finally, he sees the look in her eyes. It reminded him of his face when somebody shoved him into a boat. Or when his BFF caught him eating her low-fat yogurt. “Goon?” The question mirrors Navy’s concern.

“I—” This guy was pretty good. It was like he could smell the nerves. The redhead bristled like an angry Skuntank. She wanted to tell the loser to butt out, but that didn’t work with dogs. It wasn’t like Madd could tell the truth, not to a sheriff. She hadn’t gone this long without getting arrested for nothing. And the woman had no intention of tossing it away. “I was just thinking about home.” A hand lifted to tuck a few stray strands away. This made the stupid costume pull tight.

She shook her head. Suddenly, the words escaped in a rush. “I’ve done a lot of shit since leaving, and I wonder what’d have happened if I hadn’t.” Sure, Madd would have been a puppet, but that wasn’t too different from what she was now. Then again, that guy wouldn’t be, well, whatever he was. “Seeing you reminded me of somebody.”

A laugh escaped. Fortunately, there was a tried and true way to shut this down. “Probably just cause I’m on my rag.” Yakuza blushed beneath his fur and turned away. His plate-sized paw, hovering just over her shoulder, retreated.

“Happens to me all the time.” It’s his curse, melancholy. Such is the toll demanded by fame and glory. Given the slightest downward incline, he spirals towards gloom. Misery loves company. Her attitude is infectious. He sees himself in her. She speaks of things she has done. He knows that too well. An albatross hangs around his neck, too.[break][break]
“I started working…huh…” He drifts, turns to the sea. His eyes have a habit of turning to the sea. He picked it up when he moved to this sleepy little town on the edge of everything. Waves drift, a reflection of his own mind, lost in reverie.[break][break]
“…thirty years ago. Yeah.” An odd statement, coming from a man whose date of birth was 27 years ago. Galar and the rifts have been unkind to him, both in body and mind. It has allowed his soul to corrode. He carries that weight. Lives with it.[break][break]
“Done lots of things I regret in that time. Plenty of mistakes. Life’s sort of about that. Making mistakes. Living in spite of them. Working around them.” Shuwen’s eyes turn from the Obstagoon to his trainer, looking between Navy and the young mermaid. Whatever opinions he has on the matter, he keeps to himself. The bear is ever silent.[break][break]

The redhead turned to him. There’s a soft smile on her face—a temporary break in Madd’s tough-guy act. “You sound like my cousin.” Maybe not when she was younger. But the seeds of her melancholy had to be planted somewhere. “She walks around with the whole world on her shoulders. How you guys can feel worthless and still act so self-important is beyond me.” For Madeline, this feeling was weird. She was normally firmly rooted in the present with her eyes forward. There was no point dwelling in the past. It didn’t do anything.

But, right now, she was drowning in it. And this McKenna was way too stubborn to reach a hand up for help. It was better to drown than focus inward. “Huh.” She hummed thoughtfully. That dark hair didn’t have a single grey in it. “I wouldn’t have pegged you at 50.” The idea that he’d ended up stuck in that hellhole too never crossed her mind. Still, his words carried the weight of experience.

“I wish it were that easy.” A freckled hand lifts to rake through her short locks. Up close, it’s obvious the tousled look is the result of a professional. “Not everything’s a speed bump.” More than ever, she wished she had a cigarette. She went so far as to slip a hand toward her non-existent jacket. “A good deed today doesn’t do anything for who you fucked over last week..” It’d be nice, but life wasn’t that simple.

Still, there’s a hint of a smile. “Better, huh?” She murmurs this question beneath her breath. Hadn’t she been trying to do that? That brief spark of hope vanishes as she realizes it isn’t true. It wasn’t like she’d quit. Just keeping your head down didn’t change what side you were on.

At the offer of food, her brow lifts. A bottomless pit, the Obstagoon jumps up with a sound of excitement. A few drops of drool splatter across the water—the fish scatter. She can see meal plans rushing through those crimson eyes. “Yakky, chill.” A thoughtful hum follows as she thinks through menus.

It’d be dumb to turn down free food. Especially since she gave him a free show. Tits, tears, and all. Growing up, there hadn’t really been much comfort in food. Mom panicked when she ate too much. Neither parent could actually cook. “Anywhere with a good coney dog?” A hand lifts for pause. “Lab-grown?”

“You mean like…vegan?” It’s a word that shouldn’t be so distant from his vocabulary. Back in the big city, places that sold ethical food were all the rage. He’d never went in for stuff like that, not when he was young, not now that Galar has aged his soul.[break][break]
Yet still, he knows a few spots. This is the town he has been charged to protect, and she is a temporary citizen of that town. It falls on him to know this place as no one else does. So, with a brief trip to the archives of his mind’s eye, he spots a spot.[break][break]
“Yeah, know one. Pretty popular spot. We’d have to go now. If we don’t, the lunch rush’ll keep us there for an hour or two. Come on.” He says those last two words to Shuwen and Obstagoon. Stoic as Shuwen likes to pretend that he is, the promise of food earned a growl from his stomach. With all the training his Urshifu does, he’s always hungry. He, too, is a bottomless pit.[break][break]
“We’ll find you something to eat.” And, he hopes, they’ll wash down the pain that threatened to well up with the food. Best to let those sleeping dogs lie when calamity threatens them from the sea at any moment.
