Yuina Higashi

"Colonel! We've got two fresh arrivals in critical condition!" Yelled a medic as he ran into the patients tarp.

His glowing hand still on an injured man's chest, Doug looked over his shoulder at the man and clicked his tongue, before nodding.

"Understood. Relieve me here! Where can I find them?" He asked as they switched places, getting the information shortly after.

He was out the tarp and rushed through the camp in an instant, running around the several other officers and members of medic staff hastily working around the clock.

As with any hospital, there was no rest to be found so long as the battle refused to end.

Finally arriving at the location, Doug threw open the tarp... and recoiled.

Yuina Higashi and a Charizard were spread out on the cots, surrounded by a number of medics around trying to stabilize them.

Swallowing the curses in his throat, and the many questions and admonishments he wished to speak, Doug marched up to the group, the men opening up a space before him.

"What do we know?" He asked as he put on some disposable gloves, releasing his Orbeetle out of its pokeball as he looked over both trainer and pokemon closely.

He tried to clear his head; to get the thought that he was operating on a friend out of his mind.

Still, a sigh of relief, one that almost seemed to scare the other doctors, rang out of his lungs as he heard about Yuina's condition.

Just a stab?

"... Hooooh, thank goodness!" He said, holding his chest in relief.

Perhaps at the beginning of the war, they would've at least questioned such a careless, dismissive remark. After having worked besides the colonel for several hours however— after having seen his magic at work— they understood.

Such injuries truly seemed paltry when put against a god's blessing.

Unfortunately for Yuina, this made her low priority compared to her much worse off Charizard.

"Sedate her; Get an IV and a blood bag too. We ain't losing her to blood loss." He said, trusting her file to contain her blood type info. as he sent off the other men. "You— join me, we're dealing with the Charizard first. The rest of you; two of you Keep Higashi stable. The other two, get me a another iv, fluids and and benzodiazepines!"

These were going to be the longest 40 minutes in Yuina's life.

"Excuse me, pardon me, outta my way—" A number of blurry figures hovering over Yuina were summarily shoved aside, before another silhouette slowly panned into view, black orbs blinking down at her.

"— 'Ello, Briar Rose!" The silhouette said before a hand was pressed against her wound— where her sound should've been, at any rate, before a soothing warmth spread out from it to the rest of her body. "How're ya feeling?"

Beat.

"Oh, and before you ask— your Charizard's fine." No real context was offered to her as the figure worked, humming to itself as it handled her injuries. "Thirsty?"

His brow creased slightly, worried despite knowing better. She was past the point of danger— just a little disoriented. He didn't need to worry.

... Just in case, though.

"Yeaup, me." He said as poured some water into a cup before approaching yet again, offering it to Yuina. "Drink up."

She had an iv, but still— they could get through the dehydration faster.

He didn't question her on her words– not yet. He did wanna know who was responsible, but her recovery and peace of mind was priority.

"I dunno who 'he' is, but nobody followed ya here." He said, smiling as he turned his gaze over to Yuina's charizard in a nearby cot. "Your charizard must've gone above and beyond to help ya escape."

Luckily for Yuina and Rasza, a magic surgeon man had been staffed at HQ when they rolled up. They would both be fine.

Whoever did this, however, would not.

The expression on Yuina's face when she saw her Charizard filled him with both warmth and relief. The other medics had called for him before things got out of hand, and he was truly glad for it. He would be sure to forward them gifts once they made it back home.

Grabbing a chair, he dragged it over to Yuina's bedside before dropping down upon it, smiling at her.

"You don't have to." He said. "Just... Do your best to recover. Oh, and try to avoid these messes!"

It didn't matter how many times Eris Halla, Hideo Kino (and now even Isaac Merlo) continued to ignore him, he would chastise and whine until someone listened.

He reclined back on his seat, arms crossed as he winked at Yuina.

"Do at least half of that, we'll call it even. 'Kay?"

He froze, eyes slightly wide.

How perceptive.

"... Yeah." He said simply, his gaze moving away from her eyes to hover over her shoulder. "We can't protect the people we love from everything. We can only hope that if something does happen, we can be of help."

He supposed he could've made an attempt to keep Hideo Kino and Eris Halla and others at home, use his influence to limit where they could go and what they could do... for their own safety.

But he couldn't bring himself to be that sort of paternalistic 'guardian'. It didn't align with his... ideals. And well—

"Wanting to protect your loved ones, but also wanting them to not hate you... Honestly. Protecting others in Hoenn is hard, haha." He said with a sigh, scratching at his cheek.

"Yeah... That's a hoennian alright." Doug said with a sigh, dropping his chin atop his palm as he scratched at his cheek.

He seemed more or less used to it— though whether it was his friends professing their intent to help Hoenn no matter what, or promising not to get in trouble, wasn't quite clear.

He gave Yuina a tired, warm smile.

"... Alright." He said simply, shrugging. "No matter what, you're your own person, Yuina. You make your own choices."

He suddenly leaned forward, pointing a finger to her nose with his eyes squinting.

"And I get to tell you I think it's a bad idea." He huffed, poking her nose before reclining back on his seat, throwing a leg over the other as he crossed his arms, huffing. "But if this what you're doing, then I'll help ya."

He had trained plenty of soldiers. Heck, he had even tutored (kinda) Hideo Kino into Gym Leader level. Sure, the kid was a genius already, but he felt confident in taking some credit, so...

"I'm an old hand at Drill sergeant'ing, so..." He winked at Yuina. "Best be ready, Higashi. After this, I'm putting yer ass through bootcamp."
