It’s not that Lam is necessarily bad with technology, but his knowledge of this is limited to movies and tv shows where clever infiltrators press the whatsit doohickey a few times and bam– they’re in.[break][break]
Lam, meanwhile, is good at video games and scrolling through the Am I the Asshole subreddit at 2am for the more outlandish posts.[break][break]
“But we should definitely move soon, either way.” Dusk creeps in around them, fog rising from the ground. The normal kind, he thinks.[break][break]

matias is no better at technology than his friend is but his time in kanto has taught him the required knowledge for a mission such as this. first, they have to tune into the same channel as rocket forces are. after that, it's all about causing disruption.[break][break]

“Hmmm,” he mutters to himself as he acknowledges Matias’ encouragement, brows furrowed as he tries to find the right in. Grumbled somethings about how hackers make this look so easy.[break][break]
But most of it all sounds like empty air noise and garbled, incoherent chatter.[break][break]
“Only matter of time before it swamps the place,” he adds, the dense wafts of pink crowd the corners of his vision as it draws closer, pulled by the breeze and stretching across the growing dark.[break][break]
“Not yet—wait, yeah. Got something.” his words are half-distracted as the channel distorts and then returns with clarity, none of the call signs or messages familiar.[break][break]
He turns toward Matias, earpiece still pressed to his ear as he expectantly holds out the microphone toward the Elite Four. Poised to press the key to patch him in.

perhaps too occupied with trying to figure out how technology works, the two of them don't notice the encroaching INTERDREAM MIST until it's too late. only when matias reaches for the microphone does he stop and finally notice.[break][break]

the following ROAR breaks through the air, and from the INTERDREAM MIST comes a GREAT TUSK very similar to his own, except this one has been bruised and cut up, clearly having been in prior fights.[break][break]

he drops the microphone, then cracks open pokeballs as his team fan out to defend them.[break][break]

The deafening bellow that rumbles through the mist sends a tremor under his skin, and all too quickly, Lam is pulled from what he’s doing to look up sharply as the Great Tusk comes into view.[break][break]
Underfoot, the earth trembles from its heavy, thundering steps as its long, curled tusks swing toward them in threat.[break][break]
“We took too long.” (Thanks, captain obvious.) Or really, he took too long, really, but he tries not to fixate on that.[break][break]
“Back up, Matias,” he directs his own pokemon as they burst from their own pokeballs. Mallow sweeps forward before the light of an activated tera orb engulfs her. Meanwhile, the much smaller swablu creates her own MIST to fan out and further obscure them, pale and icy in comparison to the bright pink of the interdream mist.[break][break]
Lam scrambles back for the equipment, trying to get it all bundled up.

the icy blue of swablu's MIST floats over the pink of the INTERDREAM MIST, though not once does it override it. it does not even mingle; it contrasts and clashes.[break][break]

before the GREAT TUSK can get any closer, gengar's SUCKER PUNCH catches it off guard, knocking it back long enough for marill to slam its AQUA TAIL into it.[break][break]

not panicking, matias simply steps away from lam and the equipment to focus on the threat.[break][break]

Though the Great Tusk falters back under the brunt of the attacks from Matias’ pokemon, once it regains its footing, the oversized beast presses forward—tusks swinging to and fro as it charges the nearest target in a HEADLONG RUSH.[break][break]

As if in a warning cry, Lam’s altaria calls out, the shrill tone ramping up into a DISARMING VOICE that swells and crests in an outward wave toward the paradox pokemon’s large ears as the swablu attempts to stun it in its tracks with a spew of DRAGON BREATH.[break][break]

In a last ditch effort, Lam presses at the speaker, allowing the sounds of the fight serve as the scramble that takes over the radio channel he’d managed to scan for. Hopefully it’s enough to serve as a means to cause confusion.

at least one of them is making sure they actually conclude their mission, whether it's successful or not is to be decided.[break][break]

he has learned where there is one paradox pokemon, another soon follows, and such is the case when he hears the cry of a ROARING MOON, familiar enough with the pokemon to know better.[break][break]

"one more incoming!"[break][break]

delegating himself to the dragon, he and his pokemon turn their attentions to contend with the BREAKING SWIPE that knocks marill prone, trapping it underneath the dragon's heavy foot. it lets loose a FLAMETHROWER that holds gengar back.[break][break]

At some point, he figures they’ve unleashed enough chaotic noise over the airwaves to be a suitable sort of interference to actual communication, so he cuts the connection.[break][break]
The radio and mic are dumped back in his bag (later he’ll discover it never was actually transmitting, oops,) so that he can turn his attention back toward the Great Tusk Matias is holding off.[break][break]
In what seems to be particularly good timing, too.[break][break]
“Oh, shit!” Lam ducks, arm over his head reactively as a gout of flame announces the Roaring Moon.[break][break]
Twin MOONBLASTS are issued from both swablu and altaria, though the latter is undoubtedly far more powerful as it swings wide to aim at the dragon instead.[break][break]
The distraction, temporary as it is, is enough to split the swablu’s attention even after attacking the Great Tusk, and a swing of its MEGAHORN drops the bird from the air, unconscious.[break][break]
“Your marill!” Lam shouts over to his friend, pointing as its round body tries to wiggle loose of the larger creature’s claw as its jaws open wide again with building flame, no doubt looking to INCINERATE the lil guy.

if the marill isn't tough enough to survive this, then it shouldn't be alive in the first place. that has always been his mentality when it comes to training his team; if they die, they die.[break][break]

but for his friend's sake as well as his own reputation, he fishes out a pokeball and attempts to recall the water-type. the red beam never finds it, though, as the ROARING MOON's tail blocks it.[break][break]

gengar's SUCKER PUNCH is mistimed. matias' EARTH SPIKE matters little. nothing stops the FLAMETHROWER from burning the marill beyond repair.[break][break]

The torched mouse draws a grimace to Lam’s expression, and he glances over at Matias sympathetically. But despite the other’s efforts to make a show in helping the marill, Lam isn’t stupid. At least not totally stupid.[break][break]
He knows Matias is tougher in this regard. Less bothered by what might become of his team.[break][break]
It doesn’t exactly take a ton of emotional intuition to sense he only did it for Lam’s sake. And sure, that’s appreciated, because Lam’s…softer. Not as hardened to this sort of thing. He’s not sure he’d want to be.[break][break]
But that’s a lot of thought for a situation that doesn’t have space for it right now. His reflections are shoved to the side, even as he frowns, and he calls for Mallow to attack again.[break][break]
The altaria has clearly had more than enough of this fight, and she shrieks in irritation as she summons DRACO METEOR to pull down hunks of burning matter on top of the paradoxes.

DRACO METEOR acts as both a disruption and a powerful source of damage that the ROARING MOONS are forced to react only to find that they're too slow to move out of the way in time. so each one is struck by hunks of burning matter and followed up by SHADOW BALLS so precise that it knocks them right out.[break][break]

their threats are neutralized.[break][break]

and as the battle comes to an end, gengar succumbs to exhaustion as well, fainting.[break][break]

Between the joint attacks from the altaria and gengar, the threat is soon quelled. Once the paradoxes are cut down, they dissolve—returning to the mist that spawned them.[break][break]
Lam puffs out a heavy breath, hand smoothing over the top of Mallow’s head as she drifted back to Lam’s side. His heady nods as he looks over at Matias.[break][break]
“Yeah, I’m good. You?”[break][break]
Though the threat is gone, the mist doesn’t dissipate. It continues to hang heavy around them. He shifts to grab the bag of equipment. “Should probably move before anything else comes, huh?”

this is far from the toughest fight they'll have to go through, so he's glad that it doesn't drag on for too long.[break][break]

but his resources are depleted, one pokemon is dead, and as the INTERDREAM MIST continues to grow, it becomes clear that he will have to spend more of his time within it.[break][break]
