With so much free time now, he was bored out of his mind. Even after finishing his quota run of packages that needed to be delivered for the day, he still had too much time on his hands!

…was this what it meant to not be busy for once, after four years of non-stop putting the pedal to the metal? Damn.

He’d parked his motorbike some distance away from Verdanturf as he wasn’t ready to return back home, and was currently laid out flat across the body while looking up at the darkening autumn skies before yawning a little bit and taking a drink from a can of something definitely alcoholic.

Was he expecting to meet someone out here? Who knows.

He was in the middle of taking another drink from the can (there was a six-pack in the side car seat, however one can had already been demolished and he was on his second) before he looked up and saw… huh.

“Fancy seeing you out here, man,” he greeted the other as he sat up from the awkward pretzel position he’d squished himself onto the frame of the motorbike.

“Four damned years and I now have way too much time on my hands.”

As the illumination of the late afternoon skies faded away to the early signs of dusk, he sighed.

“Want a drink?” he offered.

“You can join me.”

“I already kind of did, you know,” he sassed back.

“After I was ‘reshuffled’, or just plain simple demoted, I cashed in on all the banked time off I have. Went with cousin Elinor Anderson to Alto Mare, but then, you know. She stayed behind and I returned. It was the craziest month we ever spent there. I also… I also had to handle arrangements regarding the family’s finances and stuff.”

(Read: he now had a lot of money in his Alto Marean bank account within reach.)

He then cracked a new can open with one finger, before taking a drink out of it as the previous can had already been emptied.

“How have I been? Well… lots of free time, I went back to the courier service I worked for back then. They were definitely very surprised to see me picking up more shifts than usual, but there you have it.”

The air around them smelled vaguely of peppermint—was the nearby grove of pine trees coming into bloom now that it was getting closer to winter? Who knows.

“What about you? Adjusting to new life as the ‘boss’?” he cackled.

At the mention of Razz, though, his brows furrowed.

“That… I left that to him, mostly—since it involves a lot of delicate paperwork and it’s ‘classified’ Rocket information. I have—had, don’t know if I still have it—access to the paperwork of who was what. If you remember Sénon Game, he was one of the bigger parts of it because well. Sénon also came from Rocket.”

Surprise of the year for Ollie, at least.

“Most of the things I’ve been handling until recently were Captain appointments, assignments and such. Shame wren rourke had to retire early…”

The moment la idiota asked about how Sénon was able to get to the top without revealing that aspect of his history, well… there it was. Sort of, kind of.

“I knew about it, as a Head does—did,” he automatically corrected after knocking back another long sip of beer.

“He kept it absolutely quiet from most everyone, because well, he was Head and how would people react to the ‘oh, he was a Rocket? How sure are you he’s not going to turn tail and run?’ if everyone knew about that secret of his?”

It was basically: don’t lay out all your cards on the table; only reveal them when the opportune moment showed itself.

“Why, how much of a mess is it? Have you… have you consulted with Raziel Beckett to ask their opinion about what can be improved on? Kid’s worked with FERNANDO SILPH before, maybe he has some better ideas about how to handle something like that.”

“Nah. I in fact thanked him for being honest with me about that secret of his. Didn’t make me see him in a different light, all things considered. He also kind of gave me a bit of bad news—before he left Rocket, he was definitely sure he saw a couple of folks on the member list that had my surname.”

What was chilling, though, was the fact that there was a William Anderson listed there; but that’s a story for another day.

Moment he mentioned asking him first, though, he couldn’t help but cackle. Quietly.

“Aww, ickle Ollie trusts me even after all these years, eh?” he teased the other, before taking another quiet sip.

“So. Barring asking for FERNANDO SILPH’s help, how can I like. You know. Help you out? In my spare time, I mean.”

“Yeah. Gonna tell you now, some of those names, I couldn’t believe seeing—when I went back to Alto Mare to handle family business there after I was reassigned, well, those names weren’t just for jack shit, they were all… real.”

When talk went to the amnesty program, he let out a low whistle between his teeth, and sighed.

“Rangers get a lot of flak, now this too?” he would sigh, taking another long sip and letting that one sit for a while.

“Can’t blame the public for thinking that way; only because. Well, you know.”

He sighed once the can left his lips.

“Look, man, if you need help anywhere with the Program, just say the word. Even if I don’t have that much pull with the higher-ups anymore, I’m sure they wouldn’t throw away literal years I spent with them for nothing, right?”

Right?

The moment la idiota mentioned the crux of the problem, he let out a brief bark of laughter.

“Yeah. Try preaching to the fucking crowd, see if anyone’s going to listen listen to you,” he would continue the statement as he reached for another can of beer before popping the lid open in a second.

Very useless talent to have, opening cans with only one finger.

Anyhow—

“Well… it was hard. You know I had the urge to go after them and have them suffer a public trial by humiliation? Like, the feeling you want to act on impulsively when people you know, people you’ve trusted have wronged you and you want them to suffer in the singular worst way possible?”

He sighed.

“Well… I did give them that, but behind closed doors. Best not to have a family’s mess become everyone else’s mess; just because the surname’s known in Alto Mare as a long-standing patron of the cultural arts. Like. Sure on the surface they’re philanthropists and all that shit who give money to the museums and conservation programs, but when I did my digging, some of them were actually fronts for… money laundering.”

He cringed.

“That was why it took me so long to get back here; I had to fix everything myself. Cousin Elinor Anderson didn’t want to have anything to do with the ‘bad blood’ side of things, so I handled it all on my own. Wasn’t easy. But we’re getting there, one step at a time.”
