time was easier to carve out in the past which is strange considering his plate was far more full back then with various duties and responsibilities that constantly pulled him apart. but now, in his sole role as advisor, it's almost too challenging to find free time.[break][break]

which is why it has taken them this long to reschedule their meal together. but, with the brief lull that comes after war, they find themselves sat in mary's familiar cafe with food between them and wine to share.[break][break]

he almost feels guilty for taking the time for himself but a balance is needed.[break][break]

"i can't believe she still looks the same. we should ask for her skincare routine."

her schedule has gotten busy once more after recent events and she's certain he could say the same. besides, it's better late than never, isn't it?

the faint smell of pine around the path to mary's had been familiar enough to dispel any trepidation she feels within her body. and yet, as they're sitting at a table with wine and food laid out before them, she feels it slowly creep back in.

"we should."

she flashes a small smile.

"it's nice to see her again - think she remembers last time we were here?"

[attr="class","illeana i"]she tries not to think of the events between them - the good, the bad, the deadly. it leaves a sadness she can't quite face just yet. the hurt is not his to hold the blame of, but the fear of leaving again keeps her guarded, secure.

"yeah, it is."

her tone is smaller, threatening to dwell. she squishes it beneath her heel and continues on.

"i missed this too."

honest, genuine. she keeps the walls half built, peering over them with a wariness she hadn't had before.

"i was worried our schedules would never allow us to spend time together again, actually. it's been... hectic, to say the least."

the first recommendation was for him not to even go in the first place as it posed risks they were unsure if they could gamble. but he is a man of knowledge; power builds on top of it, after all.[break][break]

[attr="class","illeana i"]she understands, in a small, half comparable sort of way, what he means. he's always prided himself on helping those around him... to no longer be able to led a hand must fall heavy on his shoulders.

"you're still helping."

her eyes are soft when they rise to meet his.

"it might not be in the way you're familiar with, but the information you can gather is rather valuable regardless."

but she suspects it doesn't make a difference for he will still feel this hollowness in his bones - a longing for the frontlines to play a makeshift hero in the same way before he succumbed to the hero's fate. she wonders if it'll ever leave him... if it'll ever leave her.

"it's funny, because i had never been much of a fighter. then came rustboro, the gym leader appointment, and then things spiraled from there."[break][break]

this shouldn't be new to her, really, but it's also things he has rarely ever shared with anyone. she has seen him vulnerable but only to the extent he allows. this, however, almost feels unprecedented.[break][break]

she sees it in the way he conducts himself, in the way he treads water. there's a hesitation to fight - to do what needs to be done. perhaps, in the end, that is the differing factor between them.

"there's various ways to protect your home, though. not all of them involve the frontlines."

not yet, anyway. she has a sinking feeling that eventually, he will need to choose a stance and it might have already been made for him.

outside the window of mary's, two turtle doves sit with their bodies huddled together for warmth. her eyes settle on them for longer than necessary, she realizes.

"what do you think is best now, alex?"

when her eyes return, they're searching for something. he might never possess what she seeks again but the concept of searching never quite leaves.
