Time marches onward. What has happened can never be undone. The past lives there forever. Every second is a stitch, threading into the person you’re meant to become.[break][break]
The autumn where Michael Navidson turned 17 seemed a whole different world. Civilization and all its trappings flourished. Stability seemed eternal.[break][break]
When his shift ended at some quiet burger joint off the pier, he checked his bank account. Overdrafted. Rent was due. His paycheck was already gone between bills and all the other responsibilities he hadn’t been ready for. Shouldering the burden of raising his brother, especially like this, was hard.[break][break]
Better than letting a monster raise him. Michael thought. He hated that name. Hated what it represented. Hated the man who gave it to him.[break][break]
A grinning recruitment poster greeted him by the bus stop. Some ranger hero smiled down at him. Join today the poster said. Government benefits. Government paycheck. Government scrutiny.[break][break]
A man with a soul like his could never be a ranger. Someone who’d done what he’d done could never be an ambassador of the region.[break][break]
There’s other ways to make money.[break][break]
He’d had that intrusive thought for weeks. Gangs prowled the streets around his home, ignored by the local cops. Lower Slateport sometimes proved the one black stain on the region. Every metropolis had its lower Slateport. Men offered dumb kids ways to make easy money.[break][break]
Michael was so hungry. He’d ordered some groceries for Gabe, which sent his account into an overdraft. Those charges would add up. Anything so that kid didn’t miss a meal. Anything so he wouldn’t know how bad things really were.[break][break]
All he had to do was call the number they’d given him. He didn’t know who’d answer. Pulling up his cracked phone, he planted the seed of a decision that would change his life.[break][break]
“I wanna make some money.” He said when he heard someone pick up.

A man's voice comes through on the other end, unsympathetic and outright hostile. Clearly some wanna-be gangbanger, clearly on something. The ringing of the phone having taken him aback, his anger only grows as he speaks with the realization that he's just talking to some kid, an outlet for his pent up aggression.[break][break]

“What,” The kid growled when the gangbanger came out of the gate swinging. There was a moment where the words caught him off guard, like a sudden swing of a baseball bat. It passed, and with it any hint of weakness. “picky ‘bout who you have peddle dope? Motherfucker.” There was something inherently unwise about saying that to a gang banger, but he was beyond caring.[break][break]
He was hungry. His mother was dead. His brother was waiting on him at home. At his wit’s end, he acted like a stupid kid. Try as he might to play the role of a wise adult, he was still, on the dotted line, seventeen.[break][break]
“Arceus.” A snap of his finger led to the call ending. Sighing, he forced his hands in his pockets and started heading home. He didn’t know why he spoke out loud. Maybe he just didn’t see the woman.[break][break]

“Yeah.” His agreement came at once. The words were spoken before he got a real look at the white-haired woman. Only after he turned and saw her did boyish jitters set in. He still had his footing, given all the other things on his mind, but the omnipresent reaction of a young man in the presence of beauty reared its head. It made itself known in the way he leaned against a wall, looking up. Trying to act cool.[break][break]

“Nobody cares ‘bout us up there.” His words echoed her own, peppered with the bitterness of poor youth. No matter what, he strove to keep those feelings hidden. He hid them from Kyle, the few times they saw each other anymore. He hid them from Ollie, whenever the older man, a proper grown-up, tried to recruit him to the rangers. All hints were kept from Gabe, who saw him as a good-natured older brother.[break][break]
But he hated his lot in life. Hated the world for being the way it was. One wrong spin on the roulette wheel and he had an alcoholic dad, a mom too nice for her own good, and a mouth to feed. Watching movies about the rich and famous, he wished he’d been given that silver spoon. Reality little cares for what others wish for.[break][break]
“Why would they? Monroe and his cronies are too busy smiling for the cameras. Most of the guys living there don’t even know his tax policy, I bet.” What he gave up in education he traded for voracious devouring of news. Navy thought he knew more about what was going on than half the adults who looked down on him.[break][break]
“Shhh – crap sucks.” Foul language pivoted into a nicer word. He always tried to mind his manners around women, even ones smoking like a Galarian Weezing.[break][break]
“What’s your deal? You some street prophet?” He joked, cracking a smile at his own words.

"They're holdin' onto 'em. Gettin' their grubby little fingers all over 'em. Hate to see greed get the better of someone, y'know? Thinkin' I'd like to help 'em out. Problem is, said friends ain't of the same mind, and I can't do it alone.[break][break]

"That's where you come in. You good in a battle, kid?"[break][break]

Eyes go straight to his hip, eyeing the red and white orbs in a row. Everyone in this line of work takes on a pokemon or two. The heat's too much not to. But even so, the kid ain't the type. Not yet. [break][break]

In his world, carrying a bunch of pokemon like that means you're damn serious about fighting.[break][break]

“Yeah.” The first lie, spoken with a gambler’s confidence. Lifting up his jacket, he pulled out one pokeball. Another sat at his hip. Ironsides never led him astray, right up until the moment the bird died in some far away future. “Don’t need more than two.”[break][break]
He couldn’t afford more than tw0. Every Pokemon cost a pretty penny, and his brother’s three were already too much. Roland and Ironsides would have to do for him. Even if the former was just a Kirlia, and the latter lazy as the day was long, he had faith in the two of them.[break][break]
“Real trick’s to not let ‘em throw out a pokeball. Most of these tough guys aren’t so tough when you cave their face in.” That, at least, he truly believed. Walking home in the shadow of Upper Slateport forced him to face certain realities. People always wanted what you had. For people drinking piss from the gutters, there was no justice or salvation in the world except the justice a man made for himself.[break][break]
“Bet these guys aren’t too tough. We’ll be in and out before you know it.” Putting his hands in his jacket, he turned around. They had enough of a walk ahead of them for the rest of the details to get hashed out. The only details that really mattered to him were this: these people, whoever they were, needed to have the shit beaten out of them. They were bad people. He’d take their stuff. Make it his stuff. There was a sense of renegade justice to the notion.[break][break]
But you’re gonna have to go home and look Gabe in the eyes. Some voice inside him said.[break][break]
He thinks you’re better than a thug. Way better than a murderer. That how you want him to see you? Or worse… A thought of him dead in that piss-gutter flashed through his mind’s eye.[break][break]
Remember you?[break][break]
His stomach, the third of a man’s three brains, rumbled. Two to one majority beat out the brain locked in his skull.

"Right on. Shoot first, ask questions later. You've got the attitude down pat, that's for sure. Confidence, too. Just don't get in over your head. Take it easy."[break][break]

She takes a step closer. Reaches out, places her hand on his shoulder. It's bonier than at first glance, the way his jacket hangs off him making him look bigger than he is. Like rags hanging from a skeleton. [break][break]

Explains the hunger in his eyes. [break][break]

"I ain't about to tell ya how to live your life, kid. Bet you get enough o' that already. But...[break][break]

Just need a little muscle. That's all. No goin' overboard, y'hear?."[break][break]

She squeezes her hand, staring into his cold, steel eyes. Reflection of the fire in her own a spark, to ignite that fire and burn all his guilt away. She doesn't need a killer. Not yet. Kid doesn't gotta worry about bein' anyone other who he is.[break][break]

“Navy.” He said. It was a snap second decision. Every job he has ever worked called him Michael. His father called him Michael. Only one person called him Navy. Gabe gave him that name. In time, it will be his strength. It was a truth he wanted to tell himself.[break][break]
“You got it.” He felt shame when she touched his shoulder. Given a few years, it would grow broader. Muscle would fill out and further define his frame. War would sculpt a fine statue out of Michael Navidson. At seventeen, he was not particularly fit compared to other children.[break][break]
“So, boss, you take the lead.” He teased her with the words, keeping his hands in his pocket. If nothing else, he was good at looking the part of a rough and tumble thug. If she was as good an actress as she was a firebrand, he thought they might avoid a fight altogether.[break][break]
Such dreams were foolish for a boy denying his own warrior’s soul.

"What're you, some kid from Pallet Town?"[break][break]

She's not looking down at him. That kid became a champ in that movie. Maybe he thinks he's gonna one day as well. [break][break]

Who's she to argue that? It's good to have a dream.[break][break]

"It's good. Got a ring to it. [break][break]

"C'mon, then, Navy. I'll show you the place, so you've got the layout in mind before it gets dark."[break][break]

She guides him by the shoulder to the street. Drops a ball on the ground, and a gigantic lizard pops out - a Cyclizar. One of those pokemon that're a lot more trendy over in Paldea, but they're in vogue among the thugs in Slateport lately. Some crazy woman who swears by 'em paving the way, or something. [break][break]

"Yo, Johnny! Looks like we gotta new friend! No bitin' this one's fingers off, y'hear?" [break][break]

The alpha drake sizes the kid up. Get close enough he can practically taste him. A few sniffs, then a snort that blows the kid's hair back. A sign of approval. He backs up and lowers his front end, enough for the kid to get on.[break][break]

"Looks like he likes ya!"[break][break]

The woman prods him from behind, encouraging him to mount the dragon. There's an even wider smile on her face now, like the drake's approval assured her of something.[break][break]

"Only likes his own kind, y'know. Fierce. Dangerous. Unpredictable. Must've seen somethin' in ya to let you on his back. Doesn't normally do that."[break][break]

She waits til Navy mounts the drake before climbing on behind him. Unlike every other domestic Cyclizar past and present, this one doesn't have harness. Maybe he's too big for one. Maybe he's too wild to wear it. Or maybe, she just likes it au natural. [break][break]
