Yumi sipped her plum wine as Lex did, savoring the sweetness on her tongue. "He is," she said of Hitoshi Inoue. "He's head of security now at the casino, though he's been away a lot for other jobs. Speaking of which…" [break][break]

Leaning her elbows on the table, she laced her fingers together and pinned her friend with a scrutinizing gaze. [break][break]

"What are you doing these days, Lex? Besides the underground fighting scene. Is that your only employment, or do you have other work?" [break][break]

Somehow, Yumi doubted it. As a capable thief, the red-haired woman had no problem carving out her own living in the world of crime. A living that could be comfortable, even luxurious, if she wanted. [break][break]

But the Lex sitting across from her didn't give her the impression of someone living comfortably. Or living at all.

For how much time she spent around casinos, she was never a good poker player. She was never able to keep a mask on her emotions. Triggers rushed through her like a heat wave and she burned from inside out. A little flame in her eyes, a tension in her set jaws to bite her tongue, a subtle shift in the seat to turn her gaze off Yumi and anywhere else that bothered to catch her attention.

She had almost forgotten about the casino.

Almost.

“I wouldn’t call it employment,” she squeezed out between her clenched teeth, “It’s just a past time,” That paid a bit.

It’s not hard to deduce where this conversation is going at the mention of employment and the casino. She assumed, perhaps wrongly, and spoke accordingly, “I’m not going anywhere near the casino, Yumi.”

Yumi and Lex had known each other for a long time. They'd met as children, became fast friends, and grew up together—at least, for a few years. Now, in the latter half of their twenties, they felt more like strangers. [break][break]

But Yumi saw the emotions erupt across Lex's face and knew exactly she neared a line she should not cross. Calmly, the black-haired woman took another sip of her plum wine. [break][break]

"Not the casino. I have enough staff there. I'm expanding my operations outside of Sootopolis. Sometimes shipments of goods need escorting, sometimes locations need guarding, and sometimes an arrogant fool needs to be reminded of their place." [break][break]

She set down her glass again. In a matter of minutes, her casual demeanor had transformed into no-nonsense business. The gleam in her eye was not amusement and curiosity but ambition. [break][break]

"You wouldn't have to set foot in Sootopolis if you don't want to. I need people all across the region: Lilycove, Slateport, Rustboro, Petalburg. Just tell me where you want to go and what you'd prefer to do."

Lex was, perhaps, a bit embarrassed to assume right away that Yumi was offering a job at the casino. She should know better than that. It’s felt like a lifetime since they were close in Johto that she forgets Yumi knows her. Like actually knows her. In fact, there’s no one else left on this planet that knows her better - assuming Killian is actually dead.

“You sound busy,” Lex smiled, slipping her attention back to Yumi with a gentle shift of her torso, “Business must be good then?” She was stalling while she mulled it over. There really wasn’t much to think about. It would be steady work and probably pay better than the fights. Plus, she wouldn’t have to actually fight any more. Would she miss it? Probably a little. But it could be an outlet more so than a base for income.

Her fingers traced the edge of her curve glass, “I think I’ll be in Slateport a little while longer,” she’d move when she had to. Right now, there was no need to, “I'm not picky when it comes to jobs.”

"There's no need to decide right away," Yumi said, sensing Lex's hesitation. Anyone with sense knew better than to accept or refuse a proposal on the spot, anyway. [break][break]

To bring more ease to her friend, Yumi's expression softened into a familiar smile. "I just wanted to put the offer out there, in case it's something that interests you." [break][break]

A waitress came by with identical dishes of pork katsu, the crispy cutlet resting on a bed of rice and fresh vegetables. A small jar of katsu sauce accompanied each plate. The aroma was heavenly. Yumi picked up her chopsticks, ready to dig in. [break][break]

"But enough about work. Let's eat and catch up." And, because she recognized that Lex may not wish to speak about herself, she added, "I'll tell you all about how things are going."

Yumi lightened the pressure to ensure she didn’t feel overwhelmed. Almost as if she knew her better than most. Which she did. Lex’s lips creased into a tight line while she chewed, lifting her gaze to watch Yumi across the table as they dug into their main course. For a moment, her mind wandered, considering this may be the best case scenario. She wasn’t expecting an opportunity like this. In fact, she was content to suffer alone. A part of her felt like she deserved it. She should have been better for Killian. Maybe he wouldn’t have wanted to accept Deoxys if she was just better.

Just another excuse for the inevitable. In truth, there was no stopping the course of events that led her to this moment. He was greedy when it came to knowledge and power, the legendary offered him so much she couldn’t and never would have been able to. It was easier to accept the alternative rather than the truth.

“Yeah, sure, what’ve you been up to?”

Lex had been in Johto for a while and missed quite a few things in her absence. She listened intently, curiously about Yumi’s endeavors in Hoenn and how business was for her.
