[attr="class","textbox"]The Petalburg Woods had come so far. What was now four straight months of hard work and effort saw to that. By this point, for Zephyrus, Ceres, Sectonia, and Dandori, it had basically become their home.[break][break]

Isaac couldn't help but be proud as he wandered through the woods. Before, when the team stoked the forest's growth, it could barely last a few days. The soils, while no longer blighted, had been starved. Now, after months of new life being replenished into them, parts of the forest could stand alone without their intervention.[break][break]

It could still take years to return to its former glory, even with everyone's efforts. However, at least now they resembled woods again.[break][break]

"Right now we're at the hardest part," Isaac admitted. If there was any nervousness in his voice, it was nowhere to be found. Ollie had that sort of calming effect on people. "First winter since the disaster. That's the make or break point. I'll find out if it's all gonna fall apart once the weather kicks in, or if we've whipped up something built to last."[break][break]

Luckily, Hoenn's snows were on the milder side. Frankly, they shouldn't have even existed, but even after Kyurem's descent they were nothing unbearable. So far, so good; many of the more seasonal trees had lost their leaves, but they weren't crumpling down into tree pulp.[break][break]

"The heart of the forest's where we've been doing the most work, but it's also what got hit hardest by that corruption. The outskirts only had to deal with copycats, but we haven't had as much time to touch them up. Which do you think we should check in on first?"

"Huh, I guess that's true."

[break][break] Ollie was good at lots of things, and not so good at others. That included plant growth, ironically enough. While he would never say he was terrible, there were definitely other things that he was much better at.

[break][break] The Head Ranger thinks about the one time that he'd clumsily knocked over one of Pa's plants as a kids. Ouch. Pa had not been happy.

[break][break] "Winter's getting worse here too," he mused thoughtfully, thinking of all the Ranger Reports of people being lost in caves due to an unexpected blizzard. He thought about his latest excursion with MATIAS SILPH, no less.

[break][break] Well, Isaac Merlo was much better company than MATIAS SILPH. That was for sure.

[break][break] "Let's start patrol with the copycats first, and then we can end at the center. Sounds like a plan?"

[break][break] Ollie grinned, before starting the way down the dirt path. Life still spawned onto the path, but the sprouts were small and pale in comparison to the wealth that they had once been.

[break][break] As they walked, the brunette turned to the other.

[break][break] "So, your hair's looking pretty good now. Got used to dying it already?" He chuckled.

"Still. Some ways, the snow's nice, at least. Especially now that I'm fine with the cold." Around this time last year, the change in climate was agony. Now that Suicune protected him from the frosts, he could make snow angels buck-ass naked and not even feel a thing. "Just wish it didn't come from Fuckyouasaurus Rex over there."[break][break]

Dialga and Palkia still roamed the region. Did Kyurem?[break][break]

Right now, he didn't have time to think on the scars of frost. He was here for the scars of flame. In the aftermath of Elisabeth Fiorelli's show of force, copycats tried their own hand at chemicals, blazes, and even handmade acts of vandalism. With Isaac's team focused on more long-term rehabilitation, this short-term destruction had been less touched.[break][break]

Nevertheless, these areas weren't neglected. Isaac and Ollie's path brought them toward Ceres the Torterra. This time, her Leech Seed worked in reverse, a conduit connecting damaged parts of trees to seal gaps and pump nutrients between them. She turned to Isaac and Ollie as they approached, letting out a welcoming bellow.[break][break]

"You're a wiz at it, man," Isaac said, flashing Ollie a grin. "Those tips of yours get my hair looking perfect every time. Though, what made you pick brown? I know lots of people get their hands on this stuff and just go crazy with it."

He had. In a lot of ways, Hoenn was more of his home than Kanto had ever been.

[break][break] "I know," Ollie sighed, blustering out a sigh. "Not that Mt. Chimney is getting any less of it. Though freya morningstar's project is doing wonders." He smiled at the reminder of the project that the Rangers were working on with the councilwoman. Sure enough, maybe in a few weeks, Fallarbor and Lavaridge would be cleared of the pollution.

[break][break] Ollie burst into laughter at the other's use of the word 'Fuckyousaurus.'

[break][break] "Tell me about it."

[break][break] He still remembered about the time he'd traversed the icelands with both Eva Morales and later, with Gunner Graves. It had seemed like a hopeless wasteland, and any other attempts at exploring it hadn't really changed much.

[break][break] "I didn't know you didn't feel cold though," Ollie said, arching a brow playfully at the other as he poked him. Avatarship changed a person — that much Ollie knew. It still all felt pretty surreal to him. "Does that mean you take ice baths for your morning shower?"

[break][break] Ollie shared a good laugh, before folding his arms over in thought. "I think it's Kyurem, but also the Tera Tunnels popping up everywhere." He thought about the one they'd fallen into in their last AQUA meeting. It still send shudders through him at the reminder at how they'd scorched that beast. "Can't be a good sign for the environment, if ya ask me."

[break][break] But eventually, their conversation ceased as the path broke away to their destination.

[break][break] The Head Ranger greeted the Torterra with a warm hand, knuckles brushing fondly over the pokemon's shell just like he had with willow atkins's own. It wasn't really a surprise to anyone; Ollie had a golden touch when it came to pokemon. It was how he became a Ranger in the first place, after all.

[break][break] "Why? You think I'd look better with another color?" His brow arched, lips twisting into a smirk. "Blue? Green?"

[break][break] He shook his head, pulling at his tips of bronze.

[break][break] "Nah. It's cause my Pa had this color. And after Ma died - " His throat thickened at the memory, and he shook his hair. He shrugged his shoulders. "Think it suits me?" He grinned. "You look pretty good with it."

[break][break] A hand waved at the surrounding area.

[break][break] "You're doing pretty good with all of this too."

Isaac hadn't been back to Lavaridge in a long while. It was so out of the way, so tucked aside, that frankly he could skip it without breaking a sweat even as he wandered the region. About the only time he'd been to Lavaridge in the last few months was in a strange wintertime dream, where he'd duked it out with an alternate self who felt much more at home there.[break][break]

The important part was that it was fiery, not snowy. If the climate conditions were getting that bad, what the hell was going on?[break][break]

"Glad freya morningstar's on the case. I swear, she's always got a fire under her." Not a talker but a doer indeed. It had been maybe a month or two since they'd escaped the resurfaced isle, and she was already spearheading a new project. From the sound of it, she was crushing it, too. It was a far cry from being crushed, like she was when Isaac found her. "She been feeling better?"[break][break]

Perhaps she was the one who needed that ice bath. Isaac snickered, shaking his head. "It's funny. I've never been a fan of the cold, and now I can't even feel it! I can still feel warm, though, so my showers are just the way I like 'em." He blinked for a second, eyes narrowing suspiciously. "Don't tell Navy I said that. Pretty sure if he knew, he'd cut off my warm water access."[break][break]

The sooner they finished renovation work on the former floristry, the better. Isaac would miss the kickass running-on-water commute, though.[break][break]

Sure enough, Ollie's golden touch was on as full a display as his charming, easygoing demeanor. Ceres melted into his palm, letting out happy bellows as she nuzzled his hand. At the mention of colors, Isaac shrugged a little. "I've always joked I was gonna run off and dye mine purple. But I think that'd go a lot better in theory than in practice."[break][break]

Ollie's reasons, it turned out, ended up quite sentimental. Isaac wished he could share the sentiment. It'd be nice having family to carry forward how he did. However, even if Ollie walked a path he couldn't follow, it was a beautiful one nonetheless. Isaac smiled softly as he gave Ollie's look an appraising eye. "You look like a natural, man," he agreed.[break][break]

It seemed he, too, was a natural. Already, the woods were looking better in the eye of a trained ranger. Isaac couldn't help but beam with pride at the judgment. "Just you wait. Once spring kicks in, this place is gonna shine," he said. "It's a big job, but. If we came this far despite everything?"[break][break]

"Maybe we've actually got a chance."
