ever since his avatarship, people left him alone. for good reason too. there were rumors amongst the grunts that admin cross was no longer the approachable sort — no that he had ever been the approachable sort, mind you, but everything had become much worse since his avatarship. they did not want to risk being potentially impaled by a spear, or getting accidentally frosted to death. who knew what admin cross was capable of?

[break][break] they said that he was immortal. that he was possessed. that he was no longer himself because he could bleed and bleed, and somehow never die.

[break][break] not only did he used to be a beast, but a beast from kanto, and currently led the training program. what if you didn't do enough push-ups? what if you had forgotten to do leg day? or even worse, said that you wanted to go get ice cream after going to the gym? what if he beat you over the head with a set of skis, just because?

[break][break] jayden cross had been the one to go berzerk in the cave of origin, fighting against names like beast Zev Harcourt — who's crystals these days were, potentially, equally terrifying — and also defying the attempted murder of underboss Elisabeth Fiorelli. rumors had it that he could freeze you on sight, like medusa. or that he would bite you without warning, like a caged animal. or that he might chase you off a cliff, like he supposedly had admin howard slayte.

[break][break] however, perhaps the most cruel rumor of all was that he had been the one to chase away Ashley Shepard — that he had threatened and tortured the man to oblivion, so much so that he was the reason for the long-standing rocket's departure.

[break][break] as if Ashley Shepard had not left on his own once before.

[break][break] "you said this was a puzzle?" jayden said, quizzical, as he stared at his friend across the desk.

[break][break] people left jayden alone, but such things did not apply to people like mint frost. his best friend. alongside fern delaney, he was one of the few people who still treated him like they used to.

[break][break] all in all, this was not surprising. he and mint had always been close. mint frost had always pushed boundaries, even when jayden had not wanted him to.

Mint grinned, door locked and pretty stationary spread out for Jayden to choose from. Things form pretty festive midliners, to glitter pens, to festive washi tapes and sticker sheets. He had a small bucket of little paper perforators in fun shapes, and colored pencils for shading as well. Not to mention the glitter glue. He was more than prepared. Far more prepared than he needed to be for Jayden...but then again it was Jayden.

Jayden was boring and responsible and disciplined and Mint...injected color and spontaneity into his life. And also pestered him to be social with him. Or just gave good hugs. He'd sent Jayden pictures and texts and eventually called when the man hadn't answered fast enough. "Yeah, lie ka crossword. I have the first one...first two maybe?" he asked tapping his green lead mechanical pencil to his lip. [break][break]

"Last year...I think it was a funny crossword. This one is more free form." he said, unknowingly foreshadowing their very near futures. "Next time, come over! It's been a while since you've visited." he added leaning over the other side of the Admin's desk to poke him in the cheek with a very glittery felt Christmas Tree topper that sat on top off his mechanical pencil. After writing in silence for a bit he asked, "Sooo....how've you been?" A loaded question for sure, which is evident enough buy the small but worried smile he shoots Jayden.

if jayden was devoted to a life of grayscale nightmare, then mint frost was a burst of technicolor daydream. if jayden was destined to live life frozen in a coffin, then it would be people like mint frost that would be able to pry away it's crystallized edges.

[break][break] even now, in the present of his best friend, he could feel the fog of his thoughts melting away into something warm.

[break][break] "the letters are unown," he murmured thoughtfully, staring down at the crossword in front of him. he wondered if Naomi Sato had been on this trick too — his sister would've already solved it. his eyes darted towards mint frost's puzzle, head tilted as he attempted to consider the third answer.

[break][break] after a few seconds, he nodded. "dialga," he said, pointing to four across.

[break][break] so lost in thought in attempt to complete the puzzle, jayden missed the way that mint had looked at him. "fine," he replied without thinking. "how are you?"

[break][break] it was muscle memory by this point. mint had spent plenty of time trying to teach jayden how to interact like a normal human being — or at least tried. by this point, jayden understood - on some level, at least - that it was polite and logical to ask one a question when one had been answered.

"Yeah, it's a new touch. Though Father Winter 1 had an Unown D with him in Granite Cave." he said as he poked at Jayden's paper before looking back at his own. He mumbles as he spells out the name, drawing the letters in the air before gasping. "You're right!" It was that think that showed up in Mt. Pyre wasn't it? "Well it was either that or Celebi right?" he said. [break][break]

"I'm good! Did all my Christmas shopping already!! Got some new Eiscue MITTENS too." he said, grinning at Jayden. "But I meant about your new contract." He pokes Jayden once more, opting to tap the top of his pencil at the Admin's ear. He swore he'd seen an ice chip there back in DISSEMINATE. "I've been looking at your data, and comparing your blood draws to the samples I got off Dross and Reyes." he said, tone a little less chipper as he slid into work affairs. [break][break]

He glanced around, realizing he was about to talk about the legendary. "Where's your house cat anyway?"

[break][break] he had never met celebi before, but jayden thought about the way that he and oscar clayton used to pour over books in the restricted section of the library, trying to find a solution to end all this chaos. his friend had never really liked the idea that all of their fates were at the hands of some randomized group of people, that they were at the whims of avatars.

[break][break] and yet, being one himself now, did jayden feel any different?

[break][break] in the physical way, yes. jayden no longer felt cold in the same way that he used to, as such would be evident from the absence of coat or gloves in the room, despite it deepening to nearly freezing temperatures.

[break][break] the cheerfulness of his friends face brings a tepid warmth to the room, perhaps making it all a tad more bearable then it ought to be. then mint frost mentions it. the CONTRACT.

[break][break] "hm."

[break][break] jayden's answer was non-committal as he stared across at the crossword puzzle, contemplating the answer to two down.

[break][break] "and what did you find?"

[break][break] he didn't look up from the piece of paper either. but this in itself wasn't a sign; jayden was the type to often get burrowed too far into his work. the fact that mint frost was allowed in his office at all was a symbol of their everlasting friendship.

"Is it holiday themed maybe...HoHo Hope?" he thought of lam logan 's joke but it didn't exactly fit either. Mint tapped his pencil against the paper, counting out another answer's letters before sighing as it didn't fit. He then looked back at his friend. "You avatars- you put out an abnormal amount of Infinity Energy. Far more than the normal human I think. At least, just based off your blood and some of my own for control." Mint was easy enough to test as he had no connection or patronage with any legendary. [break][break]

"Dross' blood, illeana reyes 's blood, they contain distinct traces off Infinity energy as well. Dross' is fading but...something's weird about it. I'll need more tests to figure out what's going on once the energy finished fading." He said before continuing. "Reyes is also weird, as she, I don't think, has a full patronage but is more...touched by the gods? If you wanna put it poetically." he said. [break][break]

"Nothing conclusive. I need to check samples from bryan delarosa , Cillian Quinn and Elisabeth Fiorelli to compare to yours to see if you all output different levels and what that may correlate to but...you know, it's just data. I don't know what it means yet but it shows a very physical difference between you- avatars and humans." he explained. [break][break]

"But I've been catalouging it. I think...if I have enough of this kind of data I can figure out what numbers to ignore when I'm out on the field. Maybe. Tentatively. I didn't program this thing after all."

It's not very exciting news, but Mint thinks its a start. A way to make his field work more efficient. "I-....um.....I haven't yet...but I want to run some tests on the blood for SPECTRA. See if we can emulate the MAGMA process. But that's lower on my priority list right now. I think being able to identify avatar positions is a better use of my efforts, for SPECTRA."

[break][break] it felt surreal to be referred to himself as such — especially by his best friend. it felt not that long ago that he was just as mint was. a human. normal. not infused with the infinity energy that now ran through his blood like a running river. that filled his lungs with every breath that he took.

[break][break] but mint frost was not wrong. jayden had taken some time to go through his own files when they'd taken his blood after the events of the cave of origin. none of the results had been conclusive — the majority of the experimentation from rocket's scientists had been in an attempt to stabilize him, to try to remove the fever from his mind and not let him fall deeper into chaos.

[break][break] did all humans have such a vicious reaction to avatarship?

[break][break] probably not.

[break][break] but jayden was no scientist.

[break][break] he blinks for a moment, head tilted towards his friend. "you got illie's blood?" a pause. "when?"

[break][break] surely not by her own will.

[break][break] "good job mint," he said instead, glancing down at the crossword puzzle. he had already read the data on his own, but it was a project that he knew that his friend held dear to his heart so he wanted to help him in any way possible. even if his own ability... well, he wasn't at his full strength these days. "we should be able to use resources from the science division and spectra to aid you. let me know if you want me to discuss it with Naomi Sato on your behalf." his sister was smarter than him, after all; she'd probably provide better advice than him. plus, she was an avatar herself.

[break][break] the underside of a pen, capped, runs across the puzzle.

[break][break] "it might be possible," he murmured thoughtfully. "but dangerous. we should go over the result of bryan delarosa first if you're going to tackle something like that."

[break][break] after all, the beast had been the only successful result thus far. jayden couldn't begin to think what a subject would look like if injected with the same powers of himself or Elisabeth Fiorelli.

[break][break] probably not very good.

[break][break] plus, jayden knew without even having to ask, that most avatars wouldn't be compliant if they could help it.

[break][break] "once you get the specs, though, we should be able to place sensor points at the trade routes." either at the bunkers procured by PROJECT LOCKBOX, or even some of howard slayte's smuggling routes.

He blinked in surprise at the familiarity between Jayden and illeana reyes but then remembered he'd introduced her to him a while back. Splashfest maybe? He doesn't question it. "I stabbed her during the RESURFACED TREASURES operation." he said with a shrug. "The daggers you gave me are still good." he smiled at the praise.

He nodded as Jayden brought up Naomi Sato . "Yes, you probably see her more often. I've been making arrangements on my own with THEO BECKETT and BARNABY FINCH . My proposal for it should be ready for review soon. But I'd like you to go over it where it comes to the SPECTRA involvement." he said looking back down at his crossword. [break][break]

"Well yes. Incredibly so. And I don't think bryan delarosa did well form his infusion. It's a huge risk to personnel we don't need." he said. "But we could glean from the MAGMA procedure a way to use it for weapons we'd kit our SPECTRA agents with. Something that volatile should be kept to the best we have." he said. "Plus, I think if we can dilute it into weaponry, we'd get more use out of it and less drawback. Nobody to watch for averse side effects or worry about controlling." [break][break]

"Ah...I'd have to consult with Amor Rose and Lulu Flint on this. My tech is very limited to my immediate vicinity. But, I think after capturing a bit more data, I intend to push for operations to acquire better ways to build or detection tech." That'd be harder to ask declan walsh for without results, so he'd get them to his superiors before trying. [break][break]

"Trade routes would cut down on personnel running out in the field blind...but that's probably later in the project." he said before tapping on his crossword. He'd given up trying to solve it and instead began to doodle.

[break][break] the doubt that had crept in was immediately squandered in the face of such sure-fired reassurance. of course mint would know better than to be coerced by the league. after having so many of their own betray him, jayden was weak to such threats, but his friend's works smoothed each of those worries away with simple words, with a blissful grin.

[break][break] "i'm glad."

[break][break] those daggers he had gifted had been handcrafted by Aurelie Lefevre. he had no worries that they would work to form.

[break][break] eventually, mint speaks again. his terms are easy enough to accept — having participated alongside him in SPECTRA for so long, it would be second nature to give it a review. so, he gives a simple nod in return, saying nothing else as the conversation turns.

[break][break] his head tilts at mint frost's words, sparking a memory and private project that he'd kept quiet until then. "you might find something interesting then," he murmurs, reaching into his pocket. he pulled out a phone to show-off a picture of a half-finished from a familiar blacksmith. "Aurelie Lefevre and i are working on a prototype. i'll let you know how successful it is. maybe by then, your project will have taken off."

[break][break] looking up again, he caught mint doodling into the corners of the page.

He stared at Jayden a little off guard, the word 'like' forcing pink the dust his cheeks as he thought about the handsome but very, very dangerous DRK Triad member.
