[break][break] putting aside the fact that her friend's enthusiasm at her going out with someone else made her heart twist in a way that she couldn't quite explain, mari was also conflicted because she hadn't told sasky the whole truth.

[break][break] she hadn't really said who she was going with.

[break][break] 'but this is fine,' mari said, standing outside evergrande's ice rink. a light blue infinity scarf was wrapped around her neck, complimenting her beige jacket rather well. beneath her jacket, she wore a thick winter dress and leggings to keep herself warm.

It was not a work event. In fact, Julien was pleased to have the day off for once, his schedule completely clear of meetings, phone calls, appointments, or any other events that demanded his attention as the Kalosian ambassador. [break][break]

Instead, he only had a lovely outing with a beautiful, young woman to look forward to. [break][break]

He spotted her from a distance as he approached the public ice rink. Instead of his usual suit and tie, he wore a simple, classic winter outfit: a brown sweater with black slacks beneath a tan wool coat. A green scarf and Rolex watch were his only accessories. [break][break]

Passing a food stall selling freshly baked holiday cookies and hot cocoa with milk, Julien stepped up to Mari's side. [break][break]

"Good afternoon, Miss Beaufort. You look lovely," he said, flashing her an easy smile. "Are you ready to skate?"

[break][break] He looked even more handsome than usual, dressed in casual clothing compared to his usual formal attire.

[break][break] Her hands twisted together anxiously, lifting up a nervous smile towards him. A slight dip of her head. "Mister Demassieux," she greeted, her tone taking a bit of a Kalosian accent.

[break][break] At his question, she nodded. Behind the nervousness, there was a bit of excitement in her eyes. It had been far too long since she'd taken to the ice. Would it remember her?

[break][break] "I- I am," she gulped. "How about you? Have you skated before?"

With her slight smile and flushed cheeks, Mari cut the perfect picture of a genteel Kalosian woman. Julien eyed her in silent appraisal, then gestured for her to walk with him to the rental stand. There, he fished out a few PD bills to pay for two pairs of skates. [break][break]

Sitting on a nearby bench, Julien began putting his on. "I've been ice skating since I was a boy," he said. "There's a pond on my family's estate that ices over every winter. My brother and I would often race on it when we were young." [break][break]

But that had been another time. Another life. Too many responsibilities piled onto both his and Guillaume's shoulders—another reason this moment of relaxation with Mari was so rare and precious. [break][break]

"It's not my favorite pastime, so I haven't skated much in my adulthood. But I should remember the basics," Julien added as he finished tying his laces. Standing up, he held out a hand for Mari in case she needed help getting to her feet.

[break][break] Mari tried to think about what Julien Demassieux would have been like when he was younger. A young child with perfectly
coiffed blond hair and liquid gold eyes. The thought made her blush for some reason, but luckily it was cold, so she could hide in her scarf.

[break][break] Reaching for the outstretched hand, she allowed her dainty hands to be eclipsed by his as she was led to her feet. It wasn't that she needed it for balance, but she knew it ought to be the proper thing to do as a lady — to allow herself to be led around by this handsome man.

[break][break] Mari followed him to the rink's edge. The sound of metal slicing cleanly against salted ice as they skated around the rink filled her ears, nostalgic and pure, and she hesitated at the entry way. Her fingers curled around the rink's edge, hesitating.

[break][break] Her stomach gave a sudden terrifying somersault, hands trembling.

[break][break] Behind them, someone complained.

[break][break] "Come on! Get on with it already!"

Julien stepped onto the ice with care, making sure to maintain his balance as he readjusted to the sensation of standing on thin metal skates. He tried to remember how many years it had been since his last turn around a rink. Three? Four? [break][break]

Either way, he was certain his body would remember how to move after a few minutes. [break][break]

"Come on! Get on with it already!" [break][break]

The impatient shout prompted Julien to turn, eyebrow arched curiously. He found Mari at the edge of the rink, anxiety and trepidation clearly written on her face. [break][break]

Behind her, a middle-aged woman stood with two teenage girls—her daughters, most likely. All three of them were glowering at Mari. [break][break]

"The rink is open all day and evening, ma'am. Surely you can wait just a few minutes for the young lady to get her bearings," Julien said to the older woman. Though his words were polite, his tone and glance were cutting. [break][break]

Reaching out, he offered his hand to Mari again and said in a softer voice, "You can hold onto me if you need, Miss Mari. I won't let you fall."

It seemed that the irate mother behind her seemed to think the same — her face also reddened at the light chiding, before she ushered her daughters to one of the rink's other entrances, leaving both Mari and the Kalosian Ambassador alone once more.

[break][break] "T-thank you," she squeaked, taking his offered hand.

[break][break] 'You don't need it,' a voice inside of her reminded her. 'You're just using him.'

[break][break] Her trembling fingers grasped his hand tightly as the slid onto the rink, her movements slow and uncertain, but more because of the situation that had just transpired, not because she'd forgotten how.

[break][break] "I'm sorry," she said softly once they were closer to the edge of the rink, gloved fingers still wrapped tightly around his own. "I - It's just been a while since I've skated."

Julien offered Mari a mild smile. "It's no trouble at all." [break][break]

He led her around the rink—slowly, because he read her movements and the tightness of her grip as uncertainty. And when she confessed she hadn't ice skated in years either, he nodded in understanding. [break][break]

"We don't have to go very fast, if you like," he said. "And we can take as many breaks as you want, too." [break][break]

Julien had no reason to hurry her. Their outing was supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable, not full of fluster and panic. [break][break]

[break][break] "U-um! That would be nice, I think. Thank you." Her voice felt meek. But then again, she always melt meek in comparison to the perfection that was Julien Demassieux .

[break][break] Mari focused on her breathing, trying to force the memories out of her mind. It was going to be fine. It was years. Her injury had healed. The doctor said it was fine, that she could do this, that —

[break][break] "Huh? Sorry - what?" Her cheeks flushed. She hadn't been paying attention! "Oh, um. It's been at least three years."

[break][break] Had it really been that long? Time had blurred together. Her heart tanked into something bittersweet. How had she let it be so long since she'd been on the ice?

[break][break] Guilt flickered through her face like a movie screen.

"Three years," Julien mused aloud, mentally calculating how old Mari had been based on her current age. "So you were still a teenager when you stopped, then." [break][break]

It was his turn to imagine a younger version of his companion. She was already petite; he couldn't imagine she'd gained much height in the past five years. But perhaps she'd been more scrawny, her face more child-like. [break][break]

Unlike Mari, though, Julien didn't blush at imaginings of the past. Instead, he maintained a curious expression as he glanced down at her. [break][break]

"Why did you stop? Was it because of school?" [break][break]

He could imagine that sort of scenario. After all, he stopped ice skating because he went to university. His studies, both academic and athletic, took precedence over a minor boyhood pastime.

[break][break] for a moment, she paused, as a fleeting memory swept through her. the image of her gracefully skating alongside Ciprina Fisk , twirling and gliding across the icy surface. it had once been so effortless. back then, everything had been so different. easier.

[break][break] she was so carried away with the thought, she didn't have time to be embarrassed at the way Julien Demassieux looked at her.

[break][break] when he asked her, however, why she stopped, she positively froze. her hands closed tightly around his in a vicegrip.

[break][break] "i - "

[break][break] she could feel everything grow smaller, tighter. suddenly, fear squeezed her throat, immobilizing her. her voice was small when she answered.

[break][break] "no - no, it wasn't school - i can't - "

[break][break] "i'm sorry. i have to go."

[break][break] her breath hitched and she suddenly shoved herself away from julien, skidding across the ice. she fumbled, knees snapping harshly against the pavement. she couldn't focus on that, the pain of ice scraping against her skin. all she could focus on the fact was that she couldn't breathe.

Mari's sudden vise-like grip on Julien's hand was the first indication of something wrong. Alarm bells went off in his head; his attention snapped to her. Her voice sounded so small and frail when she tried to speak. Her words fractured like glass shattering. [break][break]

And then she shoved him away, her movements wild and frantic. [break][break]

"Miss Mari!" Julien called out, startled by the suddenness of her flight. [break][break]

He surged into action as she stumbled and fell, sliding across the distance between them. Once he reached her side, he knelt and saw her pale face seized with terror, her body frozen with panic. [break][break]

At once, he recognized that she was pushed to the limit. There was nothing to do but leave. "Let me take you home," he offered, his voice low. [break][break]

And then, as if Mari weighed nothing at all, Julien picked her up in his arms, princess-style. He slowly rose to his feet on the thin blades of his skates, careful not to fall himself or drop her. Once he felt secure, he skated over to the edge of the rink and stepped out. [break][break]

He lowered the girl onto the nearest bench so she could sit comfortably, then knelt again and wordlessly began untying her skates for her.

[break][break] She was proud of the fact that she had spent the last several months without thinking of this. Without thinking of the ice and the feeling of wind gliding through her hair, the lurch in her throat when she would jump and do a triple-axle. She was proud of the fact that she couldn't remember the feeling of that false-start, that jump, that ended with her careening into the ground, her ankle falling in an unpleasant way. The sound of cameras shuttering, shouts that echoed, the uneven tilt of Ciprina Fisk 's voice as she screamed for her.

[break][break] She was proud, because she hadn't thought of that, not until this moment.

[break][break] Mari could barely register the sound of herself falling, scraping against the pavement, let alone the strong arms of Julien Demassieux gathering around her crumpled form and picking her up easily from the rink.

[break][break] She was still cowering by the time that Julien lowered her onto the bench but eventually, her breath came back to her. Her vision, blurred with tears, cleared.

[break][break] The young woman gave a sharp intake of breath, hiccuping as she wiped the tears haphazardly from her cheeks.

[break][break] "I-I'm sorry. I don't... I don't know what came over me."

Julien had finished removing Mari's skates when she finally spoke up. The fragility in her voice gave him pause, and he reached up to give her knee a reassuring squeeze. [break][break]

Perhaps it was not the most appropriate place to touch a vulnerable young woman, but he kept his hand there, warm against the fabric of her leggings. [break][break]

"You don't need to apologize," he said quietly, offering a rueful smile. "None of this was your fault. Now allow me to buy you a hot chocolate and take you home so you can rest." [break][break]
