Shopping had been his intention when he decided to go to Lilycove. But it was such a nice day that he decided to postpone the trip so he could stroll around the city. Despite arriving in Lilycove on Mistral, his Swellow, it was Mirage, his Hisuian Zoroark, who walked beside him. The only Pokémon currently not in his Pokéball.

It was also the Hisuian Zoroark's presence that kept others away. Most people they had passed seemed to give them a wide berth, as if they were afraid he would hurt them or something. But Mirage wouldn't do something like that. Well, not unless he felt the person posed a threat anyway.

As another person went out of their way to make sure they were as far away from him and Mirage as possible, he shook his head. Sighing, he stopped and started to stroke the fox Pokémon. It was while he was in the midst of doing just that that he heard some sort of noise, a humming sound.

Curious, he glanced in the direction the sound was coming from before starting to make his way towards it. The humming got louder and louder until they reached its source. What greeted them once they reached the origin of the sound made his eyes widen.

"A distortion, I've read about these. It's believed that the distortions are what's causing all the Pokémon not originally native to Hoenn to appear," he said, seeming to be talking to himself. In fact, it didn't seem like he had noticed the older male yet, too focused on the distortion to notice anything else.

He eventually became aware of Mirage trying to get his attention. And it wasn't until after he had turned away from the distortion to see what the dual type wanted that he noticed the older male for the first time. For his part, the only sign he was surprised was a slight widening of his eyes.

"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't notice you there. My name's Absalom Steel. But Absalom or Axel will do. And you are?" he said, all of this before holding his hand out for a handshake.[break] merlyn myers

it was a late afternoon and the sun was setting. merlyn was just strolling around the city to take some fresh air after having spent the whole day sleeping, still adjusting for his jet lag. a small feline, a Litten, accompanied his side as he wandered.
