Onyx leveled a look across the battlefield with a surprising amount of unimpressed vitriol for only having one eye. It seemed fate kept having him run into people he’d done… unsanctioned combat against, before. He didn’t know what it was about the world that had him constantly butting his head up against the apparent dregs of Ranger society, but it kept fucking happening.

He wasn’t competing under his real name but he also hadn’t bothered to don a disguise, not thinking it important, at the time. He was rather low-key in the org, so it was kind of funny that he kept running into people with reasons to have personal beef with him.

“Oh, you’re that guy?” It didn’t take much for Lam to conjure the memory he was referring to. He hadn’t managed to get a good look at his opponent that day out on the water, but it wasn’t everyday that someone chucked a toxapex at your head. “I like to think so too.”[break][break]

The hook of his smile edged with competitiveness before it fell flat. “Can’t say I’d ever like a repeat of that.” He could probably hem and haw about what happened that day. How he ended up dunked in the ice cold ocean in the middle of a bout of rain.[break][break]

But Lam wasn’t all that interested in rehashing his squabbles with Rocket. He didn’t really hold a chip on his shoulder the way he knew others did.[break][break]

Okay, fine. He was still a little bitter about the sucker creature getting stuck to his face. It was embarrassing.[break][break]

“Try not to fight too dirty,” he said with a dry snort as his pidove took a stance opposite of the man’s pinsir.

Onyx let one shoulder drop, face wry and apathetic. He wasn’t very impressed with his previous performance, either, but he also had the bonus of setting his own bar very low.

It’s too bad he gave himself away with the toxapex, because Lam definitely wouldn’t have recognized him otherwise.[break][break]

“Appreciate that,” he replies flatly, eyes narrowing as the guy turns his pockets out. Maybe they can make this quick and painless.[break][break]

Pops twitters, sensing the twinge of annoyance that comes from Lam remembering that particularly embarrassing defeat, and her feathers ruffle in resolve.[break][break]

She doesn’t shy away from the forward crash of the pinsir’s attack, instead drumming up the air around her in a series of volleyed AIR SLASHES.

The compressed air hits and breaks over Lucan’s carapace; some scratch hard lines into the chitin, but the strength of the shell manages to stop the slashes from hitting anything vital. Claws outstretched for the small bird, Lucan attempts to grapple it and slam it into the ground with storm throw.

A small, smug little smile pulls across his mouth when his pidove proves the point he was making.[break][break]

The heavy blow drives the pinsir down, and as it glows and bulks up with mega evolution, Pops sweeps upward—undeterred as she prepares to launch her own attack.[break][break]

The angry bug joins her in the sky, but the pidove waits for the exact moment Lam takes his own pose as z-power ignites around the little bird.[break][break]

With a furious chirp, she hurtles toward the pinsir to collide with its superpower. That energy collects around the pidove’s body, encasing her in a protective shell that implodes on impact of the meteoric mini missile.

Lam whoops up at the bird as she manages to flawlessly pull off her z-move maneuver. It’s not often that they get to actually see it in action during the course of a match. Wings tread at the air as she watches the pinsir fly back on impact.[break][break]
“Follow through, don’t get lazy.” A beady gold eye swivels back at him as Pops takes offense to the directive. But she tarries long enough to be hooked by the pinsir’s spiky horns as the bug-type buzzes back at her.[break][break]
Thrown for a loop, she tumbles through the air until her wings billow out and suspend her again. Then she is whirling back around to blast the pinsir with a rippling HEATWAVE.

Their mega-evolution is starting to wane. They don’t have much time to finish this fight. It’s down to the wire, both Pokemon running on empty…

…and the Pidove whiffs, too busy glaring at her trainer for his (good) command, and then knocked dizzy by Lucan’s strike. The heatwave buzzes a section of air that Lucan easily avoids-- there’s a slow-mo scene of him looking at Pops through the warped filter of superheated air-- and then he’s whirling around to land a final strike with guillotine, wings disappearing afterwards with a disintegrating flash…

Even Lam can’t help but thump the palm of his hand against his forehead. What a choke. The little bird continues to chirp indignantly—both at her trainer and at the pinsir. Her temper ruffling up the feathers on her pudgy bird body.[break][break]
The slash of the guillotine strike cuts through the swelter, driving Pops down with it. But unlike the fading mega evolution, she doesn’t lose her wings. Winded, the pidove still boosts herself back up into the air.[break][break]
“Get ‘im when he’s back on the ground!” Only then does Pops send down a torrent of AIR SLASHES at the pinsir below.

Onyx manages a weak wheeze of an exhaling laugh, not at Lam’s expense, but in kindred spirits, as his own Pokemon take the beautiful opportunity afforded them and fucks it up completely.
