With the amount of battles he had done already, Noel figured that they would come naturally to him by now. Yet each one filled him with anxiety over whether he would triumph or not, whether his opponent was simply better than him and whether if he was fighting to the best of his abilities. But there was no use in thinking such thoughts, he just had to go out and try. This wasn't some war, this tournament was meant to be for fun and fun he would have, no matter the outcome. With the other challenger standing across from him on the arena, he gives off a smile while looking ahead of him and with his Shaymin already brought out onto the field.[break][break]

“Oh, hey!” Lam waved a hand lazily, “Noel…right?” He thought he recalled the guy from that day out on Slateport’s beaches. He looked familiar, in any case. He was probably due for a break in back to back matches, but he did this day in and day out– granted, those official gym challenges weren’t as rapid as these little showcases.[break][break]

But it was fine. He’d sneak in a break for him and Pops after this one. Taking his spot opposite the other man, his pidove popped out of her pokeball, ready to rock and roll. She eyed the other pokemon with a sharp tilt of her head. “Cute shaymin!” Maybe it was tougher than it looked– just like his own, unimposing pigeon. “Let’s get the ball rolling then, yeah?”

He was surprised to see that Lam had recognized him. While they had only met once, and Noel would never forget a face, he didn't deem the encounter worthy enough for himself to be remembered. Yet he was glad that the gym leader would give him recognition. And while this wasn't an official match that would constitute a gym battle, Noel would hope to see just what kind of strategies Lam would use. With a smile running across his face, he would nod to his opponent before taking to his side of the field.[break][break]

"Didn't think you'd remember who I was. But this is something I've been itching to do against you ever since then. Get ready because here we come!"[break][break]

Promptly pressing on the switch on his Tera orb, a surge of power begins to swell up around his Shaymin which would change it into its Grass Tera. While a Pidove was usually the least of their worries, coming from a gym leader meant it was more than your average bird. Firing off a quick Energy Ball, it would try and see just where the pigeon would dodge to or how it would counteract the attack before it made its next move.

“‘Course! I don’t forget a face easily!” Well, that wasn’t necessarily true—he could be plenty flighty. But he also wasn’t about to forget the help he’d needed in that particular moment, surrounded by krabby with no hope of getting away on his own. Pinch-free, anyway.[break][break]
“Bring it on, then! I’m looking to see your moves in action!”[break][break]
The activation of his own tera orb mirrors Noel’s and while a bright, grassy green encases the shaymin, his pidove is overtaken by the blazing, royal blue of dragon terastalization. Lam notes the fact that they waste no time at all in launching an attack—the energy ball hurtles at them as Poppy tries to swerve left out of the way.[break][break]
Her wings beat hard, trying to keep up with the quickness the shaymin utilizes. She arcs around, tilting back toward her opponent. A swelter blazes up around the pidove as she conjures a HEAT WAVE to ripple outward to the little hedgehog, hoping to catch it in the toasty blaze.

How such a tiny bird could attack with such ferocity was a mystery to Noel, yet he knew far too well just what kind of surprises Pokemon could have in store. That was what was so marvelous about the creatures, no two Pokemon, even of the same species, are the same.[break][break]

With the Pidove taking flight, it left the Shaymin with not many options to attack. As proof of its strength, it would weather the heat based attack and stand tall. Its fur is doused in flames, and it rolls around to put out the fire. It manages to get rid of the flame, and now embarrassed after having tried to put on a courageous face, it soon begins its retaliation.[break][break]

"I didn't expect that one. Looks like your bird has a lot of surprises stored up their sleeves huh? Well we're the same! Hit them back Shaymin!"[break][break]

With its whole body vibrating with power, a wave-like projectile seeks to target against the flying bird. The Seed Flare was its signature ability, and most are unable to take a hit from it so easily.

The way Pops pulls out heavy-hitting, unexpected moves is her whole gig. She’s not exactly the most conventionally trained pidove, unlike the rest of his flock—which are far more suited to defensive or observational roles. That’s what makes it fun, in Lam’s opinion.[break][break]
One little factor like that can shift the expected trajectory of any match, and it makes the whole sport of it that much more enjoyable.[break][break]
Pops circles above the shaymin, looking for any sort of opening as it endures her first attack. That extra coating from the terastalization surely came in clutch as the HEAT WAVE rolls off the grass-type with far less damage than it normally might have.[break][break]
“Just you wait!” he quips, a crooked grin tugging at the corner of his mouth, “That’s just the start of it!” Not that he takes the insinuation of the same lightly. Sometimes it’s the smaller pokemon that pack the bigger punch.[break][break]
The spit of bullet fast seeds catches the pidove by surprise, and her little wings flutter as she is forced to drop lower in the air just to avoid being hit by too many of them. The little projectiles ping off of her, and rile her up as she tries to swat them away from her face.[break][break]
Talk about the terastalization buffer coming in handy.[break][break]
With a haughty squawk, Pops fires back—the dragon-tera typing bolstering the glow of building draconic energy as she hurls herself at the shaymin with a hefty DRAGON HAMMER.

While its attacks certainly did its work, it wouldn't be enough to end the match just yet. If anything, they only caused the Pidove to become more riled up and raring to go than before. With the bird now swooping in after taking direct hits, the Shaymin would have to brace for impact as its foe came flying too fast for the hedgehog to move out of the way.[break][break]

As the attack lands, dust kicks up and all is obscured for a moment until a moment of silence passes. What is left in its wake is a crater, with Noel's Pokemon laid flat in the center. The Tera boosted move certainly made its mark, and they couldn't dare to take another hit of the same capacity.[break][break]

"Heh, I just keep getting hit with surprises from you Lam. I would expect no less from someone who entered this tournament though. Here we go again though. Shaymin! Strike back!"[break][break]

With a pained grunt, the small hedgehog finds the determination to see this battle to its end. It gets back on all fours and looks up, eyeing its competitor hovering up in the air. If they were so keen on staying above ground, they would just have to force it down.[break][break]

With a giant leap up, it heads straight for the Pidove, barreling forward with a Zen Headbutt that would hopefully knock it down to the floor.

“Well, it wouldn’t be any good if I couldn’t at least keep ya on your toes!” he replies brightly, mood unwavering despite the constant hits his pidove is taking. At this right, if she doesn’t pull out of it, she might tank in one clean sweep, but he’s got faith–she’s a tough nut! For sure![break][break]
The zen headbutt is not it, though. The attack works as intended, dropping the little bird down with the impact. Pops tumbles in an unsightly ball of feathers, little feets stuck up in the air. Still she huffs and puffs in airless tweet–the sound similar to a rubber ducky with a broken squeaker, and then rolls herself over to push up to hop about again.[break][break]
“Alright, Pops! Play a little peekaboo!” The pidove rustles her wings, head tipping at a sharp angle as she observes the shaymin. She makes a couple more sideways hops as she assesses her opponent, looking for the best spot…[break][break]
And then poof![break][break]
She flickers away with a ghostly aura, dissolving into the first shadow she latches onto.[break][break]
When she reappears, it is behind the little hedgehog as she aims to have the SHADOW SNEAK right atop its back.

The Pidove vanished as if it never existed in the first place. This surely must be some sort of trick to fool the hedgehog. Taking a look around the arena, it would scan its eyes carefully to its surroundings, yet there was no trace of the bird at all to be found. Whatever game they were playing seemed to be working, as the Shaymin was now left defenseless to the whims of Lam.[break][break]

"Keep searching around Shaymin! It's gotta be somewhere around here..."[break][break]

Yet even Noel, with his much larger height, could not have foreseen where the bird would come from next. Soon, a shadow creepily makes its way over the top of Noel's Pokemon. Just as he's about to warn it, the shade strikes, landing a clean blow against the challenger. The Shaymin is knocked back, taking even more damage from the surprise attack, its pride hurt even more, however.[break][break]

"Rrrgh... A cheap shot... but we should've been prepared for moves like that. We won't fall for that again though. In fact, I think it's time we try and end this once and for all!"[break][break]

Recovering from the hit, the Shaymin wakes itself back to its senses and gazes up to the now hovering bird. Closing its eyes to focus on the energy it was pulling in for its next attack, the earth began to rumble to signal that something powerful was about to be unleashed. Once ready, the grass-type lets loose a boosted Solar Beam that was aimed directly at Lam's Pokemon. Hoping to clip its wings and bring victory to this hard-fought battle.

Lam watches on, entertained, as shaymin and trainer look around for the hidden pidove. She’s good at this, he’s discovered. Likely because her little size further lends to the ability to shroud herself in shadow.[break][break]
It was a bit of a cheap shot, wasn’t it? But when she can’t dodge the hits, the pidove had to resort to something to get one in. Even if just one. “Ooh, this is interesting,” he remarks as the move seems to rile Noel up into spurring a more empowered attack. He can match that, though! “Swan dive, Pops!”[break][break]
The success of it motivates her, though, and Poppy darted to and fro. Collecting her own energy—though not quite the same as the gathering light of the impending SOLAR BEAM, her downy body began to glow with its own brightness. Her wings flare as she tilts down toward her opponent below her. [break][break]
Taunting cheeps meet the shaymin’s offense, the pidove’s own super charged SKY ATTACK meeting the beam of grassy energy as she dropped straight for the hedgehog in resulting boom of light that prompts Lam to shield his eyes with a hand.[break][break]
It was only a matter of dust settling to see who weathered it with more resilience.

A moment of silence is shared between the two trainers. Both eager yet nervous to see the aftermath of such a grand attack. Noel's vision is much too obscured by the dust cloud, his eyes unable to penetrate through the veil of dirt that stood between victory or defeat. Slowly however, it begins to dissipate, and two shadowy silhouettes could be vaguely seen inside.[break][break]

With shock and awe, Noel's face seems to brighten up once he sees the result. His Shaymin stood proud near Lam's Pidove. Barely standing and with countless bruises that it acquired throughout this battle, it holds a triumphant look across its face. The other challenger's Pokemon is knocked out completely along the floor, the recoil damage from such a heavy attack deemed to much for the little bird.[break][break]

"Yes!" Noel exclaims aloud, his wins were few and far between and finally getting one was a struggle worth the trouble.[break][break]

Returning his Shaymin back into its Pokeball, he lets the hedgehog rest inside after such a hard-fought battle. He then looks to Lam across the way and flashes a smile to the gym leader, walking towards him. Pushing a hand forward in a handshake gesture upon arrival, he thanks the green-haired trainer.[break][break]

"Good match out there. I wasn't sure the way it was going to go for a while, you really had me guessing. I've gotta get going to prepare for even more matches... But I wish you luck on yours. Oh, and I'll be challenging you properly soon too, hope you'll be ready for me."

With that he bids farewell and turns around, walking away and heading off towards the city plaza. He would relax with a snack for both him and his Shaymin, the two companions getting some time to cool off before their next big battle.
