The day had finally arrived. To be in this tournament was something he had looked forward to for a while. Yet when he meets his opponent, something about them unnerves Noel. A sort of familiarity that he had to search around the vault of his mind to figure out what it was. But for now that wasn't important, there was a match to be had and he couldn't hold it off any longer. Noel's Shaymin cautiously advances to its position on the arena, already putting on a defensive stance in preparation for whatever their opponent would send out. [break][break]

Rarely does Cillian forget a face. The boy before him fills him with a sense of contempt, though he can't put his finger on why. Having dealt with many loud-mouthed fools who thought to stand up to Rocket, he's not able to immediately identify where he knows the other from.[break][break]

Not Rocket. He's sure of that, at least.[break][break]

Fortunately for Cillian, he'd disguised himself before entering the tournament, else Noel would've easily been able to identify him as the Rocket underboss who'd driven him from Sootopolis.[break][break]

Equally fortunate is his choice in partner: the Lucario wasn't a Pokémon well known in the Rocket's arsenal.[break][break]

As he wasn't given a name, Cillian doesn't provide one either. He says only, "Good luck," as his Pokémon steps onto the field.[break][break]

He didn't understand why he couldn't give the same greeting he always does to this man. Erring on the side of caution, Noel simply gives a nod to the man across the way and begins the match. If there was any information to be gotten it would have to be through battle. Starting off with a tap of his Tera orb, his Shaymin would suddenly turn into its Grass Tera, boosting its power, which it may need for this battle.[break][break]

In order to see how they would react, the small Pokemon begins to glow with a radiating energy, sending a Earth Power towards its opponent. Suddenly the ground beneath the Lucario began to tremble as pointed rock began to jut out from beneath it, threatening to cause damage if they weren't quick enough to dodge.

But while Cillian might've taunted his opponent in such a moment, 'Thomas Finnegan' is a far friendlier face. So he lets the silence pass without incident, instead clicking his tongue to warn Faolan of the shaky ground.[break][break]

There's no need, of course. DETECTING the shift beneath him, the Lucario makes to evade with EXTREME SPEED, dashing through the pillars of stone to close the gap between himself and his opponent. He doesn't manage to dodge them all, but would it be enough?[break][break]

Growling, the Lucario COPIES his opponent's trick, shards of stone emerging like jagged teeth from beneath the adorable hedgehog.

The same move being used against it was the least of the Shaymin's expectations. Stumbling around as the ground beneath it began to cave in, it would fall over and be subjected to the same spear-like rocks that it had used against its opponent. Cut and bruised, the small hedgehog winces in pain as it slowly but surely rises back up to its feet. This foe was surely the strongest the pair had faced yet.[break][break]

But it was far from over, using Synthesis to heal back up some of the damage the Lucario had caused, it regains its confidence back and prepares for its next plan of attack. While sprinting forward, it would let loose multiple Energy Balls all aimed for the speedy demon. Once the distance had been closed, it would charge forward with a Zen Headbutt to pay back the favor from before.

Though the pride of victory gleams in the jackal's eyes, Faolan knows better than to rest on his laurels. That was what got you killed. This battle didn't have such stakes, but after being trained in Kanto Rocket, the Lucario approached every fight like it was his last.[break][break]

The one against Necrozma had been. This one? No.[break][break]

Using his EXTREME SPEED in the hopes of DETECTING and dodging the bulk of the incoming attacks, he lets loose a SHADOW WAVE once he draws close to the Shaymin, letting the energy blast him back.

Something was clearly different about this opponent. Their Lucario fought as if everything was on the line. No hint of emotion laid behind those eyes of its, like it was trying to end this as quickly as possible in order to move on to the next fight. Still, Noel and his Shaymin wouldn't give up so easily. Even though they hadn't spent as much time together than any other of his Pokemon, their bond was still just as close. And they would show this pair just how powerful that could be.[break][break]

A miasma of dark energy washes over the Shaymin. It felt unlike anything it had faced before, the negative energy was almost too overwhelming. Gritting its teeth, it would try and hold out for as long as possible for the attack to pass. Soon afterwards, the move fades away into nothing, and the hedgehog prepares for its next attack.[break][break]

Gathering up power from within itself, the Tera power would react to its wants, the hedgehog radiating with a green-like energy that soon would spew out forward towards their foe. A Seed Flare was sent out, its wavy projectiles hoping to land a solid blow against the Lucario.

A volley of SEEDS FLARE out to knock Faolan off balance, and the Lucario growls as Cillian watches its HP drop.[break][break]

"I don't think I've ever seen that Pokémon before," says Cillian of the Shaymin; a lie. He had one of his own. But Thomas Finnegan was not Cillian Quinn. "Is it some kind of rare one? A regional variant or something?"[break][break]

In truth, what he really wants to know is how this kid had come into possession of the thing.[break][break]

Though Faolan can understand human speech, knows that Cillian is probing his opponent for info, his own focus remains on the fight. Steadying himself, the Lucario revitalizes with LIFE DEW and fires back with a volley of his own, alternating FLASH CANNONS with AURA SPHERES.

His opponent was the first to break the silence between the two. Asking such a simple question, Noel soon begins to doubt the unease he was feeling. Perhaps he had this person all wrong, yet still something lingered that kept his suspicions in place. He would ease up however, feeling foolish at the way he had been treating his challenger so far. [break][break]

"Hmm... To be honest, I'm not sure. People have been telling me time and time again that it's some sort of rare Pokemon. I found it injured in a forest one day and ever since we've become inseparable. Whatever kind of Pokemon it is doesn't matter to me though, it's still my partner no matter what it is or where it came from."[break][break]

He deemed it right for him to ask a question now. It was only fair after all, he thought.[break][break]

"And what about you? That Lucario of yours seems different than the others I've seen. Not every day you see Pokemon that are able to fight like that."[break][break]

It seemed like the fighting-type would never give up. Regaining whatever fatigue it might have accumulated through its healing ability, Noel and his Shaymin were in for a long and tough fight. Using Synthesis, it would recover some of the damage it had taken. It would need the pick-me-up in order to deal with what was next. Dodging left and right, the gauntlet of projectiles seemed endless, every now and then one would smack against the hedgehog's body, causing it to flinch in pain. There was but one way to deal with this problem.[break][break]

Concentrating on its next move, it would draw in power from within itself, slowing its movements and allowing itself to be bombarded with the Lucario's attacks. Once the time was right, it would unleash a Solar Beam aimed straight against its foe. Destroying every projectile along the way and hopefully being able to land a solid blow against the Lucario.

If nothing else, Cillian is a practiced liar. He'd once hidden in plain sight as a capable League trainer, taking on the gym challenge under an alias and rubbing shoulders with their Elite without fear. Those days were behind him, but a leopard didn't change its spots.[break][break]

Slipping easily into the roll of friendly stranger, he smiles.[break][break]

"That's a good mindset to have. Rare or not, it's special to you."[break][break]

Cillian could understand that sentiment, at least.[break][break]

"We've been together a long time," he says of the Lucario, fondness evident in his gaze. "He's always been competitive. It's why I do tournaments like this, even if they're not my style. Gotta get his energy out somehow!"[break][break]

Unfortunately for Faolan, the Shaymin seemed to be possessed of more energy than him, this day. Yet though the jackal was low on vitals and panting from exertion, he does not give up. He COPIES the SOLAR BEAM, two beams of brilliant energy colliding in midair.[break][break]

But only one would be stronger than the other.

Keeping on with their attack, the Shaymin steels itself as its Solar Beam is mimicked and now threatens to overpower their own. Unwilling to accept that sort of outcome, it uses whatever ounce of strength it still had in its body to keep the laser steady with more and more power streaming throughout its body, powering up the move even more. Taking small steps forward, it would let out a battle cry, signaling a rush of energy that allowed their attack to finally break through, taking over their opponent's imitation and slamming the beam against them.[break][break]

Suddenly, the match is called to be concluded via their vital gears. Noel revels in their victory, if only a little, smiling to his Shaymin and nodding at it, conveying that he was proud of both of them to have won. Returning his Pokemon back into its Pokeball, he pockets it for safekeeping, allowing his companion to rest until their next match. He would then walk up to the other challenger, putting a hand forward, hoping that they would accept the handshake.[break][break]

"You did great out there, I can see that you and your Lucario definitely have what it takes to win this tournament. Might even pull out ahead of me. Thanks for the match, and hopefully we'll see each other again for a rematch."[break][break]

Feeling embarrassed over the way he had treated this stranger so coldly in the beginning, he thought to make things right with his closing statement. Unknowing of who this man exactly was, he made note to be sure and remember his face, if fate deemed it worthy, they would surely meet again.
