It had been a mistake for Nabi to come ill-equipped. Her pokeballs, normally attached to a belt around her waist, laid on the bed of the motel room she was staying in. The belt simply did not match her outfit--a long, red slit dress with ornate gold designs. She chose fashion over practicality today, though Nabi hadn't planned to get involved with trouble today. Her interest was in the bustling casino of Sootopolis, its lights and sounds all too attractive to ignore. Like a dustox to moonlight, she was drawn through the main entrance and enticed by the sweet pings of slot machines, the jubilant cheers of lucky winners, and the cocktails served on platters by well-mannered pokemon wearing bow ties.[break][break]

Everything happened so fast. At one point, she was tossing a pair of die and scoring herself a large sum of money. Now, she stood atop one of the many roulette tables, heels like daggers in the green surface, after having just kicked in the jaw of who she assumed was a wealthy and returning customer of the casino. Nabi didn't take kindly to unwarranted touches. Likewise, he didn't appreciate losing a tooth in the process. After a series of hectic yelling and false accusations made by the assaulter, Nabi now found herself fending off a group of men. With no pokemon to aide her, she simply had her own skills and strength to rely on. This meant a lot of flips and kicks in her long dress, unsuited for combat.

No matter how skilled an individual was at fighting, no matter how well-trained, they were simply no match for Pokémon. All it took to subdue the pink-haired woman was a quick NUZZLE from one of the security guards' Pawmot, inducing paralysis. [break][break]

With eyes and ears on every floor of her casino, Yumi learned of the altercation almost immediately. She would have called the police to have the young woman arrested. Upon hearing that the guest had acted in self-defense, however, she changed her mind. [break][break]

"Bring her to my office," was her command. [break][break]

Yumi was seated behind her desk when security brought the young woman to her. The paralysis was starting to wear off, but two men still helped her onto one of the plush sofas flanking a low coffee table in the center of the room. They stepped back but did not leave. Instead, they hovered nearby, ready to take action in case the stranger remained aggressive. [break][break]

From where he lay curled in front of Yumi's desk, her Liepard raised his head and stared at the new arrival with measured caution. His mistress, however, regarded the younger woman with curiosity, not reproach. When she spoke, her tone was light, almost amused. [break][break]

"I heard you put up a good fight. The man you kicked is the host of a major late night talk show, but it sounds like he won't be making any public appearances for a while with how black and blue his face will be."

Nabi had eyed for her escape, ready to bolt through the doors and take hiding in some alleyway. But before she could make her dash, a electric-induced attack sent her into a paralyzed state.[break][break]

She imagined the worst would happen--they'd send her to prison, charge her for all the damages. Or what if the owner of this fancy casino wanted her to make up the costs through... alternative methods? If her body could move, it would have shuddered at the though.[break][break]

Seeing a young woman at the head of it all came as a shock to Nabi. She was thin, beautiful. Her mere presence echoed a sense of unbattered confidence.[break][break]

Nabi moved her bottom lip. Her feelings were slowly returning, at least enough to speak. "He deserved it," she replied, in that moment, deciding whether or not she should be careful with her words. "I'm sure I did plenty of other women a favor." She was pleased to hear he wasn't in a condition to return to the television, yet worried that would only increase her sentence.[break][break]

"Frankly," Nabi then began, "I thought you would be one of them, too. Some old, greasy, vile man without manners."

"Is it a relief that I'm not? You never know, I could be worse," Yumi said, arching an eyebrow at the younger woman. The quirk of her lips and the light laugh that followed suggested otherwise, however. [break][break]

Relaxing into her chair, Yumi considered her options. In her heart, she didn't wish to punish the girl. In fact, she saw herself in the way the woman had acted in self-defense. Even if Yumi didn't have the physical skill to kick a man in the mouth, she nevertheless possessed the inner fire to do so. [break][break]

"What's your name?" she finally asked. "I'm Yumi Hasegawa." [break][break]

Though her name was known by all frequent casino patrons, she couldn't be sure the girl knew it. For all Yumi knew, it was her guest's first time there.

"I could be worse." The thought hadn't crossed Nabi's mind, but as she looked the woman over, she realized that she was right. Appearances didn't matter. Nabi's perception of the casino's boss was already skewed with how she dressed herself in fashionable, wispy attire, and even her tone of voice came more gentle. Perhaps it was all just an act though. Nabi wasn't ready to put her guard down yet.[break][break]

Without hesitation, Nabi replied as cooly as she could. "Nabi. Nabi Park." Her fingers twitched, finally wearing off from the paralysis. She considered whether she should escape the moment her body was completely free. It was hard to grasp what this woman was trying to accomplish.[break][break]

"So," Nabi exhaled, trying to straighten herself up. "What now? I don't have any money."

Yumi couldn't tell if the stiffness in Nabi's body was due to lingering paralysis or if her words had startled the pink-haired woman. Either way, Yumi felt no pity for Nabi. The truth of people could be alarming, and the sooner young people understood it, the better off they were. [break][break]

"I don't need your money," Yumi said. "I summoned you here because I wished to meet the person brave enough to defend herself in public from such a wealthy and influential man. I saw you in the video feed. You have impressive martial skill." [break][break]

Not unlike others she knew: her loyal dog Hitoshi Inoue, and her best friend Mei Liu. [break][break]

"Where did you learn how to fight like that, Nabi?"

She flinched. Brave? Impressive? Those words were unfamiliar to Nabi. She also wasn't so sure if she was deserving of them.[break][break]

Her answer did not come immediately. For a few long seconds, Nabi sat in thought, questioning herself how much information was okay to give out. What did it matter, really? She cut ties with her family. She had no reason to harbor their secrets.[break][break]

"My family taught me," she finally admitted. "I was expected to... serve the family business." If she had stayed with them, she would have followed in the footsteps of Team Rocket. "My turn for a question," the pink-haired woman then said.[break][break]

"Who exactly are you? You mean to tell me the operations behind this casino belong to you? Henchmen and all?" Nabi glanced back at the men that had retained her.

Nabi's admission about her family's influence and expectations was enough to strike a chord in Yumi, but the tone of her voice suggested a deeper emotion. A familiar emotion, but one that Yumi did not wish to name. [break][break]

She knew better than to assume a kinship where there was none. [break][break]

"They do," she said instead, lifting her chin with pride. "Henchmen and all. Is it so strange for a woman to run a business of this magnitude?" [break][break]

She smiled, not at all offended. [break][break]

"Like you, my family taught me. And like you, I was expected to serve their business. But ultimately, I chose to live life on my terms. That's how I found my way here." [break][break]

Lifting a manicured hand, Yumi gestured to the office, with its delicate paintings and traditional Johtonian decorations that reminded her of her roots. [break][break]

"I suppose my family thought I'd let all my childhood lessons go to waste, but instead, I put them to good use." She raised an eyebrow at Nabi. "Are you doing the same?" [break][break]

Her question was a subtle probe, an inquiry into the exact nature of Nabi's family's business.

"I chose to live life on my own terms."[break][break]

It was like she had been put through a trance, as if a spell had been casted onto the young girl. "She's just like me," she though to herself, her mind suddenly recalling memories of her parents fighting over her reckless behavior as a child, of how her grandparents and relatives brainwashed her into believing the path that they had laid out for her was her destiny. Somewhere along the way, Nabi found enough strength to leave it all behind, hoping to start fresh and claim her own destiny.[break][break]

Now, here she sat, finally free of the paralysis, eyeing a powerful woman that represented the ideals and life she so craved.[break][break]

"I..." Nabi stammered, truly at a loss for words. Had she always been this weak, so affected by emotions? These were more than just emotions for Nabi though.[break][break]

She forced herself to snap out of this... whatever it was. It made her chest ache, burn.[break][break]

Nabi snapped her body forward, slamming her head against the coffee table with a startling bang! The pain in her chest moved to her head which now bled a little. She inhaled better now.[break][break]

"I don't know what I'm doing," she admitted, her head still on the coffee table. "I came to Hoenn with no plans or possessions, barely scraping by with petty acts of thievery." She slowly raised herself, lines of blood streaking down either side of her nose. "All my family taught me was to be a servant. I guess I'm worthless if I don't have someone to order me around."

Nabi's sudden movement to smack her head against the coffee table startled Yumi, her Liepard, and the henchmen who hovered nearby. The latter moved to intervene, but Yumi held up her hand. They took a step back as she stood up from her chair and rounded the desk, picking up a small box of tissues from a side table as she passed it. [break][break]

"You're young. You're not supposed to know what you're doing," Yumi said, handing Nabi the box as she took a seat next to the younger woman. "I didn't, when I was your age." [break][break]

Instead, her grandfather and parents had decided the course of her life for her. Yumi never had a reason to know any other alternative until it was forced upon her. [break][break]

"But you can't live a full life if you're on the streets, stealing things to get by." A decisive note entered her voice, lacing with the sympathy that was already present. "If you're unemployed and need some direction, maybe I can help." [break][break]

She raised an eyebrow at Nabi, her mouth curling into another smile. "Would you like to work for me?"

Nabi's eyes followed Yumi as she traveled from her desk to her side. She couldn't explain why, but for some reason, she didn't feel as if she had to be so cautious around Yumi. Was it because of their shared experiences? Strangely, Yumi herself was warm and inviting, all the while standing firm and powerful. It put Nabi both at ease and on guard.[break][break]

She reluctantly accepted the tissue box to wipe at the blood on her face. It wasn't much, but seeing the traces of red on the contrasting white napkin made her feel a little more alive, a reminder that she was still human.[break][break]

"You want me to work for you?" she repeated, taken aback. She crumpled the tissue in her hand. The idea of a steady income was enticing, albeit unfamiliar to the young girl. She sucked in her bottom lip, thinking.[break][break]

What harm was there in taking a serious job offer? If she didn't like it, she could leave if she wanted to. And Yumi seemed to understand her. That was the most attractive part to Nabi. She liked what she saw in Yumi.[break][break]

"What exactly is this line of work?" she asked, hoping to Arceus it wasn't as some server girl in the casino

"Nothing to do with the casino, don't you worry," Yumi said, as if reading Nabi's mind. "I don't think my patrons would take it well if I hired someone who was seen causing trouble." [break][break]

She placed the tissue box on the coffee table in front of them, then signaled to the guards that they could leave. They glanced at Nabi with mistrust but did not argue with their employer. After directing respectful bows to Yumi, they departed the office, leaving the two women alone. [break][break]

Folding her hands in her lap, Yumi pinned her attention on Nabi. Dark eyes met her pale blue ones. [break][break]

"This is my primary business, but I have others—subsidiary ventures that turn profit in other ways," Yumi explained. "Sometimes they require people to run errands between locations. Sometimes precious goods must be escorted by protection. [break][break]

"The job is never the same every day. You can work alone if that's your preference, or you can work with some interesting people in my employ. And," she added, with emphasis, "you will receive a regular monthly paycheck." [break][break]

Idly, Yumi smoothed an imaginary wrinkle from her trousers. [break][break]

"You'll sign a contract, but other than that, you don't have to worry about corporate nonsense, you can work flexible hours, and I won't ask you to do anything you're uncomfortable doing." [break][break]

She paused there, allowing time for her words to sink in. [break][break]

"What do you say?"

To the young and naive Nabi, Yumi's proposition was like gold. At no point did she sense a red flag or hear anything that soured the deal for her. Her instincts were screaming for her to take the job, leave behind a life of petty thievary and the occassional modeling gig.[break][break]

Nabi assumed a position of respect with both hands balled at her knees and straightened herself. Her body was now angeled slightly toward Yumi's direction. "I'll do it," she said, cutting through any sort of hesitation. "Whatever you need me to do, I can do it. Alone, with others, errands or chores—anything."[break][break]

She believed Yumi. She believed that she would be fair and compassionate to Nabi's needs. And now, she was excited. The last month had been spent aimless with her wandering town to town, city to city, with no destination for her to reach.[break][break]

Yumi could be her destination, she thought. A powerful woman who proudly ran her own business, made her own decisions. Nabi lowered her head then from Yumi's gaze, suddenly the slightest bit nervous.

Nabi's immediate acceptance was a pleasant surprise. A satisfied smile spread across Yumi's face. Reaching out, she rested her hand on Nabi's shoulder. [break][break]

"Wonderful. Consider this a bright new chapter of your life." [break][break]

Withdrawing, Yumi stood and walked back to her desk. She slid into her high-backed, comfortable chair and started tapping away at her keyboard. [break][break]

"I'll have a contract ready for you shortly. Once we both sign it, you're free to go." [break][break]

It was a simple and straightforward affair. Both women signed two identical pieces of paper after Nabi had time to read them. Then Yumi folded one and tucked it away into a drawer of her desk. [break][break]

"By the way, this is for you," she said before Nabi could leave. Quickly, she scribbled a phone number on a sheet of custom stationery and handed it to the younger woman. [break][break]

"My phone number, in case you need to reach me."
