Having made the money in her last flight, Shalin stopped at one of the many sandwich stands. She picked up a pair of chicken sandwiches: one to eat now while she was in between flights, and another for when the main tournament's Top Eight started. One nice thing about having a fire Pokémon handy was their flames, in the right temperature and distance, served as a portable microwave. She glanced at the time. Plenty of time for another flight.

Hopping into another top-three on-demand bracket, the Captain's Beedrill crawled behind her in their trip to their assigned arena. She only got through about half her sandwich before her name was called; it seemed she and mint frost were going first in their quarterfinals. "Morning!" Shalin waved to her opponent. "Captain Shalin Nariya of Rustboro. How you doing today? Excited to watch the best of the best this afternoon?"

"Yo!" Mint called out, wiping his mouth as he finished drinking from a water bottle that he quickly set by his feet. "Nice to meet you! I'm Mint and this over here is Straciatella. Good to see you!" he said, grinning at the Ranger while his Rotom buzzed by his side. [break][break]

The starting horn, followed by Queen Zing's noisy drone, would make further conversation between the two impossible. If they tried, all they would see would be lips moving, their voices drowned out by the intense buzzing.

Her nearly invisible wings propelled her to great speed, the blue-eyed Beedrill extending her rear FELL STINGER. Bobbing toward the Abomasnow, the queen thrust it toward the ice-type. If she had her way, her foe would feel what it was like to burn from the inside out.

Straciatella's SNOW WARNING blasts a snowstorm that begins to coat the arena in thick snowflakes. Straciatella inhales, puffing up against the Beedrill before blasting forth a BLIZZARD as her trainer cheers form the backlines. She glows iridescent, matching with Mint's earring before transforming amongst the gust and roaring her attack after finishing her transformation.

A Mega Earring, and so soon at that? The Mega Evolved ice-type turned the snow against her, making it difficult for her to fly in the midst of the BLIZZARD. If Mint wanted to play hardball, two could play at that game.

Lifting her right hand to be level with her MEGA CIRCLET, Shalin pinched its KEY STONE. Queen Zing glowed a bright purple-pink, assuming her apex form via MEGA EVOLUTION. Whirling her now four stings to clear them of snow and ice, she thrust them at the Abomasnow in a terrifying DRILL RUN.

Even if the whirring stings were in contact with the Abomasnow's skin, they wouldn't be for long; her aggression left her open to a powerful, carapace-cracking WOOD HAMMER. The crunching noise made Shalin flinch; if it could be heard over the loud buzzing, it had to hurt.

Wanting to maintain her distance from the ice-type, the Mega Evolved Pokémon thrust with a series of POISON JABS toward Mint's Pokémon. Hit or no, she would make a tactical retreat before her Mega Evolution ended, Shalin's gestures making it clear that she would be relying on ranged attacks for the rest of the match.

Under the barrage of POISON JAB, Straciatella can only defend, especially as the boost of her mega evolution wears off. But if she stayed like that, she'd succumb to the poison sooner rather than later. In an attempt to end this, the Abomasnow blows a whistling wind that sends off a SHEER COLD.

The SHEER COLD attack flash-froze Queen Zing, the insect icicle hitting the battle court with a loud thud and prompting the judges to wave their red flags toward Shalin. Mint had won. His performance at the tournament was impressive, which had to be good for his viewership, right?

"You're strong," Shalin complimented Mint. "Losing in the first round of every pod makes me think I should just pack it up and go back to Petalburg Woods. Oh, I think I've got a show that might help your channel out. One of these days, you should drop by Petalburg Woods and bring a high speed camera if you have one." If Mint knew the Ranger Captain well, he would know exactly what she was proposing.
