fucking off to the edge of the world is all well and good because he's absolutely abos-slutly obsessed with sam, but even he needs a damn break every once in a while. and because he's not the sentimental type, all the memories the bigass mansion houses don't bother him at all. he'd come here to bother summer 'cause he's bored, but she's gone.

even left a fucking note on the table 'cause somehow she knew he'd be coming around. telling him not to have anyone over.

so, naturally, he invites someone over.

he's in the hot tub out back, stretching and watching his breath curl in the too-fucking-cold-air.

when's the last time that he'd seen knox?

[break][break] jayden can't remember. he can barely remember anything anymore since before the cave of origin. his memories are blurry and hazy, frosted over into impenetrable ice.

[break][break] the rocket admin steps through glass doors and onto the prescott's back patio. he is wearing a too-thin under armor for the weather, but these days he can't feel anything let alone the cold that frosts the winter air. behind him, CHIEN PAO prowls around like a king surveying it's own home, large paws pressing against wooden banister and peering across the prescott's courtyard that seems to stretch on for miles.

okay, so he invites his friend jayden cross over. his friend who also wears another name - michael volkov - but who has, up until this point, apparently, never worn another face. knox doesn't startle when he walks in 'cause knox's back is to the patio doors, but he gets a cheeky grin when he hears his friend jayden cross' voice, but he startles when he turns.

the nifty little bracelet on his wrist goes beep beep beep and opens up captain's pokeball, but the pikachu's already out and lounging around somewhere else in the house. not here for medical emergencies.

"jay?" knox says, incredulously. "hair dye's one thing, but bleaching your lashes? that shit can make you go blind. i know. i almost tried it once."

[break][break] he hadn't realized how long it had been since he'd seen knox prescott. hours had blurred into days into weeks. it wasn't uncommon, considering the fact that knox prescott likely understood that his work schedule was as busy as samuel carter or summer's, but it was a bit uncommon considering all that had happened to jayden as of late.

[break][break] "it's not bleach," he says. "it's just... like this. ever since... "

[break][break] his eyes dart over to the large wild cat that is peering over the edge of the prescott establishment, looking quite unnatural in the domestic atmosphere, as it's eyes follow that of a pachirisu dodging into the bushes. it's lips peel back, as if hungered.

[break][break] jayden looks away from CHIEN PAO and back to his childhood friend, approaching him by the hot tub.

ever since...knox's gaze follows jayden's. knox is, by no means, a pokemon expert, but he's fairly certain that he's never seen anything like the cat that's investigating the lanai. it turns its head and knox glimpses the swords in its mouth; despite the heat of the jacuzzi, he shivers.

knox wades closer and folds his arms up, propping his chin against them, head tilted, and when jayden gives him the news, he looks so, so sad.

merrick used him like any rocket father does his son, but jayden's own was another breed. there's a reason the two of them got along.

"you okay?" he asks. "i got some things that could help."

[break][break] instead, he starts to unbutton his shirt. on his chest is a familiar patchwork of scars, but the most recent of which would be unfamiliar to knox prescott — the fangs that sunk it's way into his flesh, surging him with a toxin so fierce that it had no choice but to ruin him.

life's shit and then you die. sometimes no amount of liquor or molly or coke can right all the wrongs in the world, but it can damn near get close. jayden's not like that though. he's always been too tethered to reality, too high-strung to let himself float away.

knox' bright blue eyes are mostly curious, but still a little sad when he notices the marks.

still, he smiles wide and he says, "well, my dude, i wanna hang out with you too. it's nice to be back here after all this time. bet ya heard the good news, huh? merrick's kickin' it with the fishes and i get hot tub privileges back."

his smile stretches. he gets real close, grabbing jayden's arm, tucking himself to his side, because it's hard to say i'm hurting and i want you next to me when you're hurting and when all you want is someone to sit next to you and to hold your hand and to say, in maybe not so many words, i see you. i got you. you're okay. it's gonna be okay.

"prescott fuckin' industries, man. we're goin' clean. straight drug peddling and fucking wall street. summer ordered all the traffickers get brained. sam's been pickin' em off on her orders."

he laughs. what cruel justice.

"i'm gonna marry that man, man. what about yours?"

a young jayden would have felt jealous, envious, that knox had such a life. that he'd killed his father in ways that jayden had never been able to. that he had a sister like summer. that he had a partner like sam.

[break][break] to know that there was a version of himself out there that didn't belong to knox, because it never really had, not when he and knox were too similar — they were puzzle pieces that didn't fit, jammed only together, by the thing called rocket.

[break][break] knox tucked himself against his side and the ice crystals that had formed along his skin like scales began to melt in the bubbling pool of hot water that was the tub.

[break][break] "they sound like a great pair."

[break][break] summer and sam, who would've thought?

[break][break] knox's two favorite people.

[break][break] "you sound like a great pair," he said also, his expression genuine, his smile warm. it was a long time ago that jayden had ever wanted knox and knox had ever wanted jayden and neither of them had ever wanted each other, not the way they wanted fern and sam, because things were not the same as they were now.

[break][break] he blinks, however, with surprise when knox pops the question.

[break][break] "i.. i don't know."

[break][break] "i suppose... i've never thought about it."

[break][break] marriage seemed such a far-gone conclusion from everything he'd ever known. he'd never gotten to ask his own father for the reason that he wed his mother, and it had never quite seemed to matter.

[break][break] because for jayden, as long as he had fern delaney, in whatever capacity they allowed him, he was fine.

"yeah, my worst fuckin' nightmare, y'mean," he says, but he doesn't mean it. summer sucks. like s-u-c-k-s, but he loves her, 'cause love is stupid and it's supposed to be painful. the people you love hurt you over and over again, but sometimes they're good. and that's all you can ask for.

"mm, yeah, who'd'a thought someone'd ever tie me down? but he's so hot, jay, and when he comes home 'n there's still blood all over 'im? does things to him. good, yummy bedroom things."

he pops his cheek, makes a noise like plopping water, and laughs. he knocks jayden on the chest, turns his forehead against his shoulder (so cold!). then he looks up at the night sky; the mist curls off the jacuzzi and dances with the stars.

"i like the me i am when i'm with him. and he's obsessed with me. and fuckin' life sucks, so why not hold onto what ya can when ya can? i say fuck it."

he chuckles. "always divorce if it don't work out, yeah?"

[break][break] "mm," he says instead, glancing down only at the soft plop of matching snow-white hair on his chest, as he and knox stare up at the glittering night sky. "usually i'm the one who comes home with blood."

[break][break] he wonders if it "does things" to fern too. should he ask?

[break][break] "but sometimes," he edges, uncertain how to bring this topic up. a hand floats above the hazy water, pinching the mist as if he can feel the sparks of fern delaney's new abililties fly off his hand. "sometimes, they're - they're electric."

[break][break] redness heats up his pale skin, but he focuses on the way a star streaks across the sky instead, leaning back against the jacuzzi wall.

[break][break] knox's words make sense, but they always do. knox has a way of making the world spin with sense, in a way that jayden has always found difficult to defy.

[break][break] because they're in knox's world, and he's just living in it.

[break][break] "i don't like the idea of divorce," he says, voice growing slightly cold at even the mere thought of parting fern from him. his brow pinches together, concern shadowing across pale features. "or departing at all."

[break][break] i don't want them to leave.

[break][break] "but it's not like i can keep them tethered to me either, like a bird in a cage."

[break][break] softly, he adds, "they're meant to fly."
