He needed to clear his head. When he returned to Hoenn after the fall of Galar, he had thought brighter days were ahead. Reconnecting with his friends and loved ones, serving the Region as a Ranger, and meeting new people were supposed to salve the grief he had worn like a wound after Galar. Instead, his pain had only amplified.[break][break]

Even Watts could feel the pall of emotions that had settled over Jack. The normally playful Boltund stayed close by as Jack numbly exchanged his Safari ticket with the warden and entered the Safari Zone. Though the sun was bright, Jack adjusted his knitted hat against the chill.

There was a popular saying in the travel community: Wherever you go there you are. And while Jack had gone to the Safari Zone to clear his head, his thoughts had following him.[break][break]

Shoving his hands in his jacket pockets to keep them warm, he wandered along a path aimlessly. For each effort to clear his mind, his thoughts pressed in the moment his focus lapsed. And foremost among those thoughts was Zev Harcourt. The mystery of his disappearance remained unsolved and Jack's sadness had turned to anger. When he had reached out to Neffatari Nzingha, hoping for closure, instead he was left with more questions. Instead his anger had just simmered as he dwelled on all the ways his friend had so callously abandoned him.[break][break]

It tooks a nudge from Watt's cold snout to bring Jack back to reality enough to notice the wild pokemon in front of them. He summoned a gentle smile for his Boltund as he tossed the safari ball.

Jack continued on down the path, quickly retreating back into his thoughts. He knew it didn't help to dwell on it and that he wasn't going to have some epiphany that explained his former friend's disappearance. He knew better to blame himself for Zev's actions too, though he couldn't help but rake through his memories for signs that something was off or something that he, himself, could have done differently.[break][break]

As if summoned from his memories of Zev Harcourt, the buzzing of a Combee preceded the pokemon's appearance on the path ahead. Jack waited quietly a moment, allowing it to pass by at a distance. He only wished he could avoid his thoughts so easily.

Jack pushed his thoughts away from the mystery of Zev, but they raced ever onward as he walked. Logically, the next place they turned were the mystery of Isaac Merlo. The day of their meeting outside of the defunct Howling at the Moon still seemed surreal: the empty bar, Isaac slipping through the door of Zev's old apartment, the strange jump of wind that had carried them partway across the region so they could find a new bar. Even thinking of it still made him dizzy.[break][break]

A magikarp leapt from the water next to the path, landing with a splash that pulled Jack's focus back out of his head. Watts looked expectantly between the splashing pokemon and his trainer back Jack shoved his cold hands into his pocket and kept walking, already sinking back into his thoughts.[break][break]

A bobbing light ahead on the path caught his attention as he walked. His feet following the will-o-wisp blindly as Jack continued to reflect on the state of disarray his life seemed to be in. He had hoped for some normalcy after his return from Galar but things only seemed to get bleaker. He was thankful that at least he had Aurelie Lefevre in his life as a source of stability.[break][break]

Watts nudged him again and Jack turned his attention back to the path. That glowing light was close now, revealing itself as the flame of a Charmander's tail. Jack reached for a safari ball and threw.

His thoughts of Aurelie Lefevre were filled with the clang of metal, reminding him strongly of the sound of her forge. Allowing himself to drift back into his thoughts as he walked, the sights and smells of her Lilycove apartment were a soothing balm. Even in times of stress, it was a warm refuge for him, whether that be the homey feel of the apartment, the taste of her food, or the heat of her bed.[break][break]

The clanging of metal became louder and Jack began searching for the sound around him. It wasn't long before Watts led him to two Bronzor fighting on another with the ring of metal on metal echoing loudly across the surroundings. He grinned, taking out another safari ball.

As he headed back toward the entrance to the Safari Zone, Jack's head had finally begun to clear. Watts, sensing the change in his trainer, now pranced ahead in the tall grass. Jack smiled in spite of himself as the afternoon sun warmed his skin in the chill January air. When the grass rustled nearby, he wasn't even surprised.[break][break]

Removing the final empty safari ball from his belt, Jack tilted his head curiously at the Poltchageist. It wasn't quite the same as the Polteageist he was familiar with from Galar but it still felt like a familiar cousin. By the time Watts noticed the pokemon, Jack was already throwing the safari ball.
