He had enrolled because he wanted to meet more people — because he needed to get his mind off things — and figured that whatever experience gained in the process would be good enough for him.

[break][break] Wins, losses, none of it mattered as long as he could —

[break][break] And then, on that tiny piece of paper with his next opponent's name on it, he had seen the words in simple print.

[break][break] Enough to send his heart plummeting straight down to his chest.

[break][break] Caleb Harcourt.

[break][break] Ollie didn't know why he felt the way he did. Didn't know the reason for the uneasy way that he stood at the opposite end of the arena, as if he was waiting on his first date, or waiting for Pa to scold him over something stupid he'd done. Maybe it was a bit of both. 'No, that's stupid,' he chided himself. He and Caleb - there was nothing wrong. There was never anything wrong, when it came to the two of them.

[break][break] He and Caleb could stand through anything.

[break][break] Liar, that sneering voice inside of him whispered.

[break][break] Forcing on a bright smile, Ollie glanced up just to see that familiar whip of brown hair at the opposite end of the field. Those cobalt eyes that sent a bolt of electricity down his spine no matter what.

[break][break] "Caleb," he greeted, warmly. An attempt, at least. He approached the other man, easily, as if nothing at all was the matter. And maybe he wished it hard enough, it would come true.

[break][break] Tofu, ignorant of all the human's problems (or maybe he simply didn't care), looked eagerly for his next opponent. In his hands, he held a churro.

"Ollie," he greeted back, without warmth. A mask of wary neutrality warred with a simmering frustration that had been growing ever since he'd last seen the Head Ranger.[break][break]
At that party.[break][break]
Why did a smile that had once filled Caleb with a giddy anticipation now cause his fingers to itch, almost balling into fists so he could punch it right off Ollie's infuriatingly handsome face?[break][break]
Ollie was his childhood friend, one of his favorite people on Earth. Or, he had been. He should be. But resentment had festered, poisoning Caleb's heart. His Rocket capture and the League's failures were now tangled up with a different sort of pain. One that Caleb had not been able to name until very recently.[break][break]
Jealousy. Plain and simple.[break][break]
"I'm surprised Gideon isn't here to watch the match," Caleb quipped coldly, releasing Lyra onto the field between them. The Lapras eyed Tofu with a curious expression, sniffing the cinnamon-dusted air as the churro was inhaled.[break][break]
"You'd think he'd come out to support his boyfriend."[break][break]
All around Caleb and Lyra, rain began to softly fall, the RAIN DANCE an echo of Caleb's stormy mood.

He had been so tangled up in his feelings of Caleb Harcourt and all that entailed that he hadn't realized that the two probably knew each other. After all, Gideon's brother Gunner Graves worked in HBIC and in conjunction with the Ranger's Amnesty Program. "Oh! Did you invite him?"

[break][break] Ollie hadn't bothered, because he didn't think GIDEON GRAVES really like these kinds of things.

[break][break] It was for the same reason that he'd been surprised to hear that illeana reyes and Eva Morales partook in the event at all too.

[break][break] He was distracted by the sight of the familiar Lapras, sniffing at Tofu's Churro.

[break][break] And then it hit him. Like a ton of bricks.

[break][break] 'Boyfriend?'

[break][break] Immediately, his cheeks flushed, ruddy and bright.

[break][break] "He's not — we're not — "

[break][break] In truth, he didn't know what they were.

[break][break] "He's just a friend," he said lamely, scratching his cheek. Tofu was quick to get to the start of the battle, not interested in watching Ollie fumble yet another thing in front of Caleb Harcourt. The churro grew soggy in the face of the sudden rain, causing the Pikachu to scowl and throw the treat to the side.

Maybe he ought to have been paying closer attention to the battle. Maybe he ought to have been worried that his part-water type was facing off against an electric type.[break][break]
But all Caleb could focus on was Ollie.[break][break]
"Just a friend?" Caleb laughed bitterly. "So you make a habit of kissing your friends, then? Have you ever considered his feelings? It might mean something more to him."[break][break]
Was he talking about Gideon anymore? Or was he talking about himself? It felt like a lifetime ago, but Ollie had kissed him once, too. Then he'd balked at the prospect of dating Caleb, shocked that Caleb would think he was into a "guy friend" that way. It had embarrassed Caleb, but he'd chalked up the confusion to teenaged drunk shenanigans.[break][break]
But then he'd found Ollie again in adulthood, and there'd still been something between them. Some flirtatious spark Caleb couldn't quite put his finger on. It had felt frustratingly like a meaningful connection, one with real attraction, one beyond friendship.[break][break]
And Ollie's denial was slowly driving him mad.[break][break]
Another man came to mind, sapphire eyes boring into Caleb's soul as he'd scoffed dismissively at Caleb's very real memories of their shared intimacy in a far-away Galar.[break][break]
Lyra attempted to dodge the Pikachu's ball of electricity; in return, she blasted a powerful DRAGON PULSE in his direction.[break][break]

He thought about the disappointment that had risen high in GIDEON GRAVES's face when he pushed him away, stalking towards the exit when that moment had happened. All the high that Ollie had been feeling from Gideon's presence had vanished in that instant.

[break][break] But it wasn't his fault. He'd never promised Gideon anything.

[break][break] But guilt threatens to rise in him anyway, like high tide.

[break][break] "What? Has he - " Frustration makes his tongue feel thick in his throat, too difficult to find the words to adequately explain how he felt. "Have you talked to him?"

[break][break] Should he have invited Gideon to the battle today? Would he have even wanted to come, after he'd messed everything up at the League party?

[break][break] The DRAGON PULSE crashed against the sparks of electricity created by the DISCHARGE attack. Tofu skidded out of the way just in time, feeling the attack scorch the top of his fur. Growling, he retaliated by darting forward and attempting to sweep the other off his feet with an IRON TAIL attack.

Lyra endured the electric attack, wincing with pain as the water around her conducted all too easily. Caleb didn't seem to notice, however; all he could do was glare angrily at Ollie.[break][break]
"What? Talked to him?" Caleb shook his head, confused.[break][break]
The last time he'd had any significant conversations with GIDEON GRAVES was several months ago in that horrible rift - The Border - right after his brother, Gunner Graves, had nearly died. Caleb partially blamed himself for that, even though technically it had been an accident. He'd meant to catch up with Gideon in the aftermath, but his life had spiraled out of control after the events of the ancient tomb. After his capture.[break][break]
"Look, Ollie," Caleb sighed, though it was really more of an irritated growl. "I don't care what you do, who you sleep with - " more lies, a voice in the back of his mind hissed " - I just wish you'd be honest about it. About how you feel. About who you want."[break][break]
And how it's not me. How it will never be me.[break][break]
Maybe then, they could move on. Maybe then, Caleb could stop feeling like his heart was being ripped out of his chest every time Ollie smiled at him.[break][break]
Idly, he tapped the Mega Accessory at his wrist. Going up against a Pikachu did not favor Lyra - not unless she was super powered. Ice crystals glittered as she grew three times her normal size, shell expanding and eyes glowing a bright turquoise, as if lit from within. She bellowed, opening her maw to release an ICE BEAM at Tofu, carving a path through the dirt with the force of a mighty blizzard.[break][break]

[break][break] Those words, for some reason, felt like a spike pierced in the center of his heart, revealing the anxieties and fears that he never wanted to voice outloud.

[break][break] 'He doesn't care about you. He never cared, not really.'

[break][break] It explained why it had taken so much time for Caleb Harcourt to say "hello" to him when he'd first landed in Hoenn, why it had taken so much time for him to reveal the truth about his past, why - even now - he still never told him the things that were most dear to him.

[break][break] Like why he'd been kissing PENELOPE LIVY at the gala. Since when had the two known each other? Since when had the two cared?

[break][break] His chest squeezed, feeling oddly like it had that day in Penny's apartment, watching the love of his life entangled in the limbs of another.

[break][break] But it was the latter end of the Ranger's sentence that triggered Ollie, that had him stalking across the side of the battlefield so that he could glare properly at his friend. Former friend.

[break][break] "I am honest!" he snapped. "All I am is honest, Caleb. You should know that about me." Didn't years of their friendship mean anything? "How could you even say that?"

[break][break] Fist clenched at his side, enraged by his own complicated feelings, it triggered the DYNAMAX BAND wrapped around the Head Ranger's bicep. It glowed with fierce, bright power that later imbued Tofu to grow to three times his size, expanding to catastrophic proportions as the Lapras' form morphed too.

[break][break] In the form of a icy beam, winter crystallized around the gigantic Pikachu's feet, holding him in place. Electricity crackled white-hot into the air as the arena flashed like lightning when the G-MAX VOLT struck again.

[break][break] "Are you calling me a liar, Caleb?"

[break][break] Ollie's gaze burned into him, emerald quartz burning with an emotion that the Head Ranger had never shown Caleb before. Something that seemed unnatural, wrong.

Tofu grew to an unimaginable size, and for a moment, Caleb was shocked into silence by the intensity of the deja-vu that washed over him. He'd seen gigantic Pokemon like this before - in Galar. Choked with the sudden onslaught of memories, Caleb stumbled backwards slightly ( - a wooden crown, kneeling peasants, Isaac Merlo's inspiring speeches, a battlefield littered with void-black crystals, a poison that threatened to consume the world and everyone Caleb had been tasked to protect, sapphire eyes filled with a quiet mirth, a girl he'd have died for despite Elisabeth Fiorelli's resentment -) and nearly tripped over a rock. Steadying himself, he tried to catch his breath.[break][break]
Only to realize that Ollie was right in front of him. And he was livid.[break][break]
Time seemed to stand still. Vaguely, Caleb could register Lyra's keening, the crashing of thunder, and a great swell of ice and snow - a half-frozen blizzard of a HYDRO PUMP.[break][break]
Are you calling me a liar, Caleb?[break][break]
Was he? Was he really? Caleb's chest ached, hands balled into fists so tight he could feel his nails biting into his flesh. It was the first time he had ever seen Ollie angry; he'd half-joked in their youth that the other man was missing the "anger gene."[break][break]
But of course he could feel angry. He was human, after all.[break][break]
Caleb knew he ought to be alarmed, but in that moment, all he could feel was a weary sense of relief. For once, Ollie wasn't doing that thing he always did, where he belittled the negative in favor of an unrealistic optimism. For once, he was accepting things as they actually were: broken.[break][break]
You asshole, a part of him chastised, the part that could recognize the tragedy in tarnishing something beautiful, in forcing it to shatter when all it had ever wanted to do was make people happy.[break][break]
"You tell me," he snapped, though his own anger soon dissipated, replaced by a sorrowful agony. "I'm a bad man, Ollie. I've lived a dark fucking life, but you - " Stormy eyes intensified, affection mixed with frustration mixed with a burning unrelenting hunger. He reached out, grasping Ollie's shirt with a shaking hand, none too gently. " - you've always, always, been my sun."[break][break]

[break][break] To lie to her, to Laurence Anderson, to FERNANDO SILPH, to almost everyone. He had hated it, but he'd done it all for her. Because he knew it was the right thing to do, in a situation like this. To be with her, to protect her, to live for her.

[break][break] ollie morales, a man who was always stubbornly optimistic even to his detriment. ollie morales who had been taught remain steady and strong in the face of danger, to always support the people he loved, to always love the people he needed to protect.

[break][break] Suddenly, staring at those eyes of endless blue that had tormented so many of his dreams for the last couple months, last couple years, Ollie couldn't think. There was no room to think, as Caleb pulled him forward.

[break][break] Without a moment's hesitation, Ollie leaned forward as calloused hands grasped the sides of Caleb's face. For PENELOPE LIVY, he was a protector that was willing to burn. For Caleb Harcourt, there existed no greater longing than to be consumed by him, to crash and then drown into his broken shores.

The kiss was as electrifying as the Dynamaxed Pikachu's lightening.[break][break]
Caleb instantly pulled Ollie in, one hand still gripping his shirt, the other moving to cradle the back of his head, fingers threading through chestnut hair. He kissed back with all the built-up fervor and desire and passion that had nearly festered into something ugly as it was denied over and over and over again, now finally able to be unleashed. It wasn't relief so much as vindication.[break][break]
How this man had tortured Caleb without realizing it and loved him despite everything.[break][break]
A wintery sea clashed with the raging thunder, and an ICE BEAM shot out, freezing the water into a slick surface meant to topple the skyscraper-tall Tofu.[break][break]
Caleb had forgotten the battle. All that mattered now was Ollie. When they finally parted for air, cheeks flushed and chests heaving, Caleb's stormy blue eyes smoldered before closing again as he leaned in to rest his forehead against Ollie's. They had always been close in height.[break][break]
"I need you," he murmured, meaning it. Desperation laced with a deep, unwavering affection. "I can't do this without you. Any of this."[break][break]

[break][break] He'd wanted him even before he'd known what wanting was. Back when things had been easy and simple, when his days had been full of sunshine and promise, and the thing he worried about most was how many laps coach was going to make him run around the field that afternoon.

[break][break] The Head Ranger pulled the other towards him, so willing to drown, as he felt the desire and heat radiate off the other men. Rain and water splashed around them, hands tangled in the other's collar to keep him close.

[break][break] This wasn't like all of their other kisses, the ones that had been when they'd been teenagers too drunk and stupid to know up from down, left from right. This wasn't like kissing PENELOPE LIVY, which felt like coming home. This wasn't like kissing GIDEON GRAVES, which was like a soothing balm after a scorching summer day.

[break][break] This was Caleb and for that, it made all the difference.

[break][break] Beside them, the frosty winter crawled up the skyscraper of a Pikachu, freezing him further. Groaning with pain, Tofu fought back, releasing a torrent of MAX STEELSPIKE to put some distance between them.

[break][break] Ollie pulled back to breathe in the sharp, salty tang of the air.

[break][break] 'I need you.'

[break][break] Eyes smoldering, Ollie stared into the deep ocean of Caleb's eyes as he spoke to him, lighting a fire that had been long left to ash. His heart tumbled and leapt, swelling at the implications in his friend's words.

[break][break] "Caleb," he said, as if it was the simplest thing in the world. "You've always had me. Since we were kids, it's always been us — me and you."

[break][break] He leaned forward, hands pressed against both sides of his cheeks, to kiss those swollen lips.

How he'd waited for this exact apology, which seemed to carry within it the weight of all the other apologies Ollie owed. I'm sorry I didn't try harder to see you when we were in college and I'm sorry I didn't look for you when you were captured by Rocket and I'm sorry I didn't acknowledge the depth of your pain. Ollie wasn't the only one to blame, however: Caleb had been wrapped up in self-loathing and post-traumatic stress for far too long. Only now was he making an honest attempt to crawl out of that dark hole and make something of his life.[break][break]
Finally, he really could be the man Ollie had always believed him to be.[break][break]
"Better late than never," Caleb muttered, but he was grinning into the corners of Ollie's mouth. "I'm sorry too. I've let my anger get the best of me, at times."[break][break]
Lyra was pushed back by the steel spikes. She willed the ice crystals that floated around her bulky form to coalesce beneath her fins, creating a smooth surface for her to slide gracefully across. Then she unleashed another tidal wave of HYDRO PUMP at Tofu.[break][break]
Caleb didn't want to let go. So he held Ollie, and found that, in the end, it was so very easy to forgive him.[break][break]

[attr="class","textbody"] Stupid, they were stupid boys, caught up in their feelings and heads up their asses too far to actually acknowledge each other. It was why it had taken so long to say it, to realize it. That he'd always wanted Caleb the same way that Caleb had wanted him.

[break][break] It was far from perfect, but Ollie had never asked for perfect. Not from Caleb.

[break][break] Holding him close, Ollie couldn't help but grin at his friend, knuckles brushing gently against his cheek.

[break][break] "Yeah. You're an idiot too. But I wouldn't change you for anything."

[break][break] It was messy, it was complicated, but just like everything else between them, it just seemed to fit.

[break][break] Caleb holds him and Ollie doesn't let go, hand pressed gently against the other's neck as he breathed him in.

[break][break] The battle goes on behind them both, as rain mixes with ice. The HYDRO PUMP hits back into the Gigantamax Pikachu, who releases a thunderous MAX LIGHTNING as the war wages on.

It was the sort of acceptance he'd yearned for his whole life. He'd certainly been an idiot at times, but none of it seemed to matter now.[break][break]
"Are you...free after this? There's so much I want to - " do to you " - talk to you about."[break][break]
Caleb's body was on fire, cheeks flushed and heart hammering. He wanted to drag Ollie somewhere private and continue what they'd started. But he also wanted to warn him. Zev Harcourt had been at the Silent Icelands, and his power was clearly growing. The League needed to take his threat level seriously.[break][break]
He wanted to talk about the future of the Amnesty Program, as well - instead of harp on its many shortcomings, it was time he did his part to actually try and make it better.[break][break]
There was so much he wanted to say to Ollie, so much lost time to make up, and so many ways he wanted to show Ollie just how much he mattered to Caleb.[break][break]
In the end, electricity would always trump water. Lyra did her best to withstand the thunderous current, one last DRAGON PULSE attempting to stave off the worst of the damage.[break][break]
