"haha, yeah, as long as you're with me, i'm sure it'll like you better." compared to him, at least.

tapu koko wasn't necessarily a pokemon that belonged to someone in the league, but having aligned itself with them, its whereabouts are known to those that have the authority kyle was one of them.

they find it eventually, flashing a scornful look at the avatar that could've been his. he flashes it an apologetic smile before turning back to cian.

"why do you want to meet him anyways?"

perhaps it was a question he should have asked before bringing cian here. he just accepted his request when he had been asked, knowing that there's probably no deep meaning behind it.

Tapu Koko was on edge - not the Tapu Koko beholden to the league, of course. No, this Tapu Koko finds itself flitting about in agitation. Or perhaps it's buzzing with curiosity.[break][break]
Fern isn't quite positive of which.[break][break]
It wasn't the first time the idea of seeing what would happen if two Tapu Kokos were put together had crossed the Rocket admin's mind. But it is the first time they've chosen to descend on Ever Grande with the intent of doing so.[break][break]
They have to wonder if it will be like when it met Tapu Fini and Elisabeth Fiorelli. Or if it will be positively cataclysmic.[break][break]
The more erratic part of them hopes for the latter.[break][break]
"Don't get too jealous, pigeon," they tease their patron in a sing song as they sit astride their dragapult, high in the air above the city. Electricity buzzes off of Tapu Koko's feathered ruff. "The right moment should be soon."[break][break]
Blue eyes scan the world below. For now, they bide their time.

he nods and agrees even if he doesn't know why exactly tapu koko would like cian more than kyle, unaware of how the top champion had turned its patronage down years ago.[break][break]

"that sounds like something you should've asked before you invited me out here, hehe, but i dunno, i thought, damn, the league has this really cool legendary working with them, why not try and meet it? just one of those things, ya know?"[break][break]

soon enough, they find the guardian deity, and it's hard to tell whether it's impressed, confused, or offended by cian and his spiky hair, its expression almost unreadable. but as it giggles, it announces the start of their training session with a crack of THUNDER.[break][break]

"wah! guess we're doing this now."[break][break]

together, they train, remaining blissfully unaware of what lurks in the skies.

over time, kyle and tapu koko have remained cordial with each other. after aligning itself with the league, it can only show recognition to its champion if it was to work with them.

...or maybe it's just being cordial since cian was there.

kyle remains as an observer, letting cian play with tapu koko for training, and vice versa. he sits by one of the rocks low enough to be a stool, yawning leans back to look up the sky.

a pokeball by his waist twitches. he assumes it's a response to the tapu koko before he realizes that aqua's tapu koko wouldn't be subject to the reaction.

the champion gets up and tenses, all while trying to be subtle as to not disturb cian and his new training partner.

A peel of THUNDER splits the sky near them.[break][break]

Though it is not aimed at them, and the high voltage does not bother Fern in the least, it nearly fries their dragapult. Which would result in an undesirable descent, wouldn’t it? Cecilia swerves, cutting swathes through the clouds over the head, leaving the admin with a thin layer of condensation that sinks into their clothing and dampens their hair.[break][break]

The appearance of the Tapu Koko provokes their own patron to dart forward in agitation— the muted orange and black of its own feathered fringe ruffling as its eyes narrow on the brighter island deity. “Patience is a virtue, you know,” Fern trills at it, a half hearted attempt to stay its eager behavior lest it give away their position prematurely.[break][break]

But that twin electricity is already crackling off of Tapu Koko, and they know that it will do as it pleases. As it always has and as they themself tend to do as well.[break][break]

It doesn’t completely expose their position, but another rumble of THUNDER hurtles toward the earth where the other Tapu Koko… plays? They are unsure of its behavior, curious as to why it deigns to mingle with humans it hasn’t truly claimed for its own.

"no," he answers.

it's unnatural, almost as if a pokemon had done it. with eyes on their own tapu koko, kyle knows that it was from a third party that would be agitated at the scene he was included in.

drk triad, perhaps? maybe a rocket who found key members of the league and thought they would be easy targets. kyle wouldn't even discount the idea of it simply being wild pokemon.

"do you think you can strike back?" he asks tapu koko. "you know, just in-"

he wasn't even able to finish his sentence when the tapu koko obliges, not because of kyle's request, but because it, too, was bridled with curiosity with who the assailant was.

it shoots its own thunder at the sky in an attempt to strike it down in retaliation.

Idly, they wonder if this is what the league does with its unattached legendaries. If they are dragged into the tedium of training and assistance without any power or choice, or if these pokemon choose to assist.[break][break]
“Do you think it would be liberating, if we spirited it away?” they ask aloud, gaze tilting from the Tapu Koko below toward their own companion.[break][break]
Probably not.[break][break]
And even if it were the case, it was likely that their patron would not be pleased with the situation–fickle and attention-seeking as it is. Two of them in one prolonged space? That would be asking for a continued lightning storm over Sootopolis.[break][break]
Tapu Koko does not, in fact, share. Even with Fern, and they’re on its good sign.[break][break]
But then again, the nature of their connection began with curiosity, much like this and the way it watches its counterpart now. So maybe it is Fern who does not wish to share.[break][break]
Definitely not.[break][break]
The Tapu Koko, finally seeming to detect them, unleashes another peal of THUNDER, and the admin lets out another hoot of entertainment. “Have at it then, Pidge.” They click their tongue, and their dragapult drops itself along with Fern into a PHANTOM FORCE portal so that it might spit them out closer to the ground below.[break][break]
Tapu Koko, meanwhile, plummets from the clouds–hurtling not for the other island spirit, but toward CIAN MAHER with electricity crackling of its shielded arms, which had snapped together to form its birdlike mask.[break][break]
To what end? Likely to see what the other Tapu Koko might do.

anxiety dances along his sweat-covered skin, leaving him on edge as he watches kyle lopez slip into top champion-mode.[break][break]

with his hand already in his pocket, he taps on the TEA ORB the moment he sees something plummet from the clouds above. crystals coat the surface of raboot's fur as it lunges back to defend its trainer, meeting the FALSE TAPU KOKO with a HIGH JUMP KICK only to be flung back.[break][break]

with the FALSE TAPU KOKO still spiraling towards him, he looks over just in time to see the REAL TAPU KOKO soar to his aid.

"you hold him off for a while," he instructs cian. "i'll call the authorities."

it's not like their tapu koko will be following his commands since the grave slight of denying him an avatar happened years ago. unfortunate for the tapu koko that it chose a person with zero interest in power at that time.

just like the other one, league's tapu koko ignores other objectives and, instead, concentrates on what piques its interest more: the shiny version of itself.

it attempts to intercept the tapu koko with a take down of its own, wanting to play rough with its counterpart. curiosity of its capabilities in battle was its current intent in its mind.

on the background, kyle distances himself from the fight since he wasn't the target. one hand readied a ball while another called from his phone. they were in ever grande, at least, so there's bound to be backup nearby.

"yeah, so remember the area where we told you we're visiting? yes, the tapu koko one. apparently, there's a second one, and..."

It is unfortunate that they miss even a bit of the show for the convenience of quick travel. Offended by the attempt the terastalized raboot makes, Tapu Koko swerves from its task in pursuing the second in order to try snatching at the bunny up between its pincers.[break][break]
In doing so, it tries to shoot upward into the air again to give it a little SKY DROP from considerable height.[break][break]
When Fern reemerges, it is the first thing they notice. Their attention deviates to find the subject of their study, but lands on kyle lopez instead.[break][break]
Their expression crumples into a sulk, and in a flash and crack of sound, they travel the space between them in no more than few blinks.[break][break]

fern can apparate or travel from place to place instantaneously using electricity and electrical currents. there does not need to be preexisting electricity for this to be possible, for they can create their own.

"Ohhh...I wish you wouldn't do that!" they whine, their tone edging on childish dismay as they make a grab at the communicator in the Top Champ's hand. Their expression shifts again and their smile is a wild, sharp thing. "You're bound to spoil all the fun."

for all his talk on heroism and doing the right thing, he's yet really to prove himself, at least not in the same way others have in his position. he prefers playing the diplomatic role, supporting people where he can which most often is only within rustboro and nearby.[break][break]

this is new.[break][break]

SKY DROPPED, raboot can do no more than attempt to BOUNCE when it hits the ground, still talking an immense amount of damage, but raboot is as tough as the crystals that coat it.[break][break]

it joins the league's TAPU KOKO and closes the distance with FLAME CHARGE, intending to fight alongside it while they attempt to contain the opposing TAPU KOKO.[break][break]

it's only then that cian realizes they aren't alone.[break][break]
