The location was marked on her handheld device. Some hobbyist diver had seen the luvdisc but wasn't a trainer and couldn't fix it. Thankfully, their report was detailed enough for some Rangers to handle it, and Robin had been eager to try her hand at such an unusual assignment. Plus, she rarely gave any of her water-types a chance to shine.

She fitted the headgear to her face to allow her to breathe and see properly at those depths, though the water pressure wasn't enough to warrant a full suit. "If we act fast, we might rescue the luvdisc before their stressed movements summon hostile pokemon." She released Phione into the water before jumping off the dock herself.

Porter hadn’t set out in the world to become a water trainer. It had sort of happened organically, Ermenesande being his starter, and Iratiri being just a baby he’d brought with him when he left Paldea.

There weren’t a lot of specialists in Hoenn’s Ranger ranks; plenty of people had Water-types, of course, but it still seemed like his name got volunteered for a lot of water-based things.

“Right. We have to go as quick as possible.” He affixed his own divemask while Ermenesande checked his O2 tank, then followed robin coello off the dock, falling backwards into the water, his Empoleon sliding in after them.

“Do we know how deep they are? Or what they’re trapped in?” he asked as they descended, voice rough and staticky, muffled through the rebreather.

It was always nice to have a specialist at hand. She loved helping with ghosts, but she had only a handful of environmental rescue missions under her belt, so she felt much more confident about their success with a water-type specialist around. "They're pretty close to shore, so we should see them if we keep following the sea floor down." She thought about the other part of his question.

"I think they're caved-in? Like there was a little alcove that closed in on them? The report was a little unspecific." Civilian reports were a little finnicky like that, though she couldn't fault a citizen for doing a good deed.

"There! I saw a flash of pink!" Beneath them was a sliver of pink imbedded in the rock-and-coral formations. But some skrelp stood between them and the luvdisc. They would have to be careful, for the skrelp could produce a lot of poison in a short amount of time that wouldn't be good for the luvdisc or the coral formations.

The drop off shelf past the shoreline was jagged and steep, falling in fathoms just a short distance beyond the sand. Porter chanced a glanced upward at where the sunlight diffused through the darkening water, and was not shocked to see it already very dim.

He turned back when Robin declared she saw something. His face fell at the sheer number of Skrelp between them and their target.

“We’ll just have to be gentle,” he said, releasing his Staryu. “Kihara, bubble beam.”
[break][break]
The star-shaped shell began to spin, and a series of bubbles emergen from between her spines. They lifted and rose, intermingling between the Skrelp and almost tenderly shifting them to the side as they began to disperse. It opened up a small pathway to where the corals were trapped.

“Do you think you can, um, squeeze in there while I run interference?” he asked, slightly sheepish, but also a foot taller than her.

The bubble beam was a great idea.

She grinned at him at his request, though it didn't translate well given her headgear for scuba diving. She nodded a confirmation and dove under to examine the trapped luvdisc. She began to work at nudging the collapse alcove off of the fish. Phione came in close to help, using aqua ring to gently push and erode the rock. "We're almost there!" Robin gave a status update without looking back at her partner, trusting him to keep any offended pokemon off her back.

Robin nods her affirmative. Porter watches her for a beat, but he doesn’t have the time to sit back and let her do all the work. Kihara’s bubbles are gently shifting the Skrelp, but the flash of something dark in his peripherals makes him whirl.

The Sharpedo looms out of the deeper sea, teeth bright even in the dark water. Porter swallows, breathing harsh in his respirator. A golden-crowned head darts up between predator and prey, his Empoleon putting herself neatly in the line of attack.

“It’s okay, Erm,” Porter rasps, watching the Sharpedo pull a wide crescent turn, one eye watching, just investigating.

“Doing okay, Rob?” his nerves are betrayed only by the unintentional truncating of her name.

Robin laughs with relief into her respirator as he asks how she's doing. "Never - urgh - better!" As she reports her status, she lobs the fallen rock away from the entrance. Dozens of Luvdisc scurry out of the hole where they'd been trapped. A few even stop by Robin's face and nuzzle her scuba mask before swimming off. "Mission complete!" She states as she offers Phione a high-five.

She turns to help push back the remaining aquatic predators. Phione uses moon blast to push a nosy skrelp away. "We're good to resurface," she announces as she watches the colorful school of Luvdisc escape into the dark abyss.

The moonblast is bright and flashy in the deep water. The Sharpedo seems to wince and then zooms away, disappearing back into the darkness as quickly as it came. The uncanny valley of it all made Porter’s stomach turn.

“Cool beans,” he said, turning towards Robin to flash her a thumbs up. “Let’s make like a tree and get the heck out of here.”

He kicks towards the surface, star and penguin in tow.

Free of sharpedo, skrelp, and any other nuisance, the duo are able to resurface with ease. Robin removes her headgear before using Phione to get back on the pier. "Wow, that was so much easier with a water specialist." She laughed. It was nice to have assistance here since she had so few water types on her roster. Besides, he had seemed so comfortable underwater.

"I'll have to call you at my next forest fire," she said half-teasing. She had Snorlax for most disasters, but surf was often a larger move than the situation required, and she didn't like to drown local wildlife while putting out smaller flames. "Call me if you're ever haunted, man." She grinned and gestured a phone to her ear with her hand spread in a y-sign. "Catch ya on the flip side." Phione mimicked her two-finger salute (sans fingers, of course), and the duo scurried off. She would be barely out of sight when his phone would ping with her number and the comment: handle the incident report, will ya?

Porter slides the heavy tank off his shoulders and sighs.

“I’m not a specialist, not really,” he says, smiling, but nods eagerly when she mentions calling him in for the next disaster. “I l--,” love forest fires, they’re so interesting ecologically dies on his tongue, because a) it’s weird, and b) haunted?

She’s a blip in the distance, so far away he could imagine it. Then his phone pings, and he huffs a laugh.

Sure. I don’t mind the paperwork, he types back, peeling off his flippers and laying back on the dock in the sun to dry.
