Despite being members of the same family, their lives were very different from each other, even during their early years. Not all of their struggles were the same, but they were still bound by blood. It was all their other challenges and hardships that allowed them to understand one another.

it makes her feel better about her decision. marginally. he talks about balmung like she talks about lyune and their continued share similarities make her soften. he says he's not the one to ask, but she'd fielded the same question to half a dozen others and all they'd done is squabble like children.

gods, she hates meetings.

"i said i'd answer honestly, right?" she says. he had asked a question. "not as much as we'd like, but we are. we just...

"we can't afford to wait."

she opens up the video and twists it around to face him. it's impressive. it's incredible. it's catastrophic. something of that size could level a city if they're not careful. 

"i used to not care about the implications. i almost burnt myself up. now, i'm - i find myself wondering if we'll have a hoenn left to save after all this is over."

"Maybe that's what we need." Roy declared with his regular mischievous grin which allows him to sink further into the depths of his seat. He used his right hand to further explain his point. "Maybe we need to burn it all down to build something new."

He was joking, but every joke carries a bit of honesty, especially in Roy's case. To the draconid, Hoenn was a canvas painted with bitter memories. That's why he needed to leave. It's why he spent so much time in Unova. Everything reminded him of his family, but it was also worse than that. Now it was a place where legendary pokemon and their avatars squabbled over insignificant things while everyone else played victim to their path of destruction. To Roy, Hoenn was doomed long before Dynamax was ever introduced.

His gaze refuses to lock eyes with his cousin before her response. Instead, he maintains a view on his sole glass of water.

her lips thin. she used to believe that. hell, she used to be okay with that. she said as much to elisa, once upon a time. the only way to purge rot is to raze the entire garden and from the ashes, new life could grow. but they're not plants and if they eradicate the past, they'll be doomed to repeat the same mistakes. 

she says, "i can't think like that. not again."

bodies washed up on an endless shore, a perpetual twilight overhead. charred bones and bloated limbs and ice so cold it burns. 

she blinks away the flickering visions and hmms, darting away from this path of conversation and towards something more lighthearted. but something she's been curious about too. 

"can you speak draconic, kol?"

Unlike his cousin's, Roy's tongue struggles with the draconic syllables. His attempt at the tone sounded closer to english than that of the dragon's word. In a way, this made him feel embarrassed; as if he wasn't one of them. Then he found his mind lingering on the thought of both abandonment and betrayal. Freya was the only one left to talk to him.

In a swift transformation, his demeanor shifts, embracing something more primal and animalistic. His palm raises above the table and he uses his index finger to command attention to the screen of his cousin's tablet. This time, his words sound as if they were from a fluent speaker of the dragon's tongue.

it's the growl of a hatchling scraping against her ears. hope is a vacant tenant in her heart, but it visits now with a flutter and she finds she's holding her breath, biting back the urge to say more. waiting, wanting, hoping with a vehemence rarely felt before. 

happiness, even rarer than its kin, blossoms in her chest and she hums delightedly, despite the question. despite the fear for the future. despite the grim and dark and bleakness of it all. 

"nuri jaka," she whispers in a hiss. her cheeks hurt from her smile.

The transition back to english was abrupt, causing a jarring sensation for the young draconid. That's all he could muster. He wasn't fluent in the tongue of dragons and in a way, the words felt draining. Still, he felt that draconic offered expressions that were not possible in his native tongue. For this reason alone, he felt comfort in knowing that he wasn't the only one that shared the language.

and because she trusts him, because she has to trust him, she says, albeit lowly, "that's why, in the coming months, when i call on you, i'll expect you to answer." her eyes glitter. "because i'll need you when we take back my home."

That's all he has to say. There is no banter or loophole he plans to take advantage of. His words were strictly genuine. Their heritage was less than perfect, but that didn't mean they couldn't make it right. Fate had left them with the tools, and they decided to rebuild instead of tearing the whole thing down.
