Having spent the last two weeks recovering from her sudden sickness, she was eager to be out and about again. She needed to slow down her travels across Hoenn to avoid pushing herself into illness, so she planned on starting in Mauville and looking for direction from there. She always spent at least a full day in the city, usually harassing her favorite gym leader in some manner. This time around, there was a class orientation for rookie Rangers.

Robin couldn't pass up the opportunity to learn something. The orientation seemed to be about battle training, and Robin could certainly benefit from it. She slipped into the outdoor class once she located it and listened for a minute until she heard a prompt for volunteers. "I volunteer!" She raised her hand with a huge grin on her face. "I look forward to learning something about my team." She pushed through the set of student Rangers before her, pokeball in hand. "What's the battle set-up?"

when annalise had been a fresh-eyed trainee, her battle training had mostly focused on subduing wild pokemon, coupled with some self defense lessons. she believes that now, more than ever, rangers need more robust lessons to prepare them for paradox pokemon, catastrophic disasters, and rocket. [break][break]and she tells the class as much, in as many words, before moving on to the undoubtedly more interesting part — the demonstration. as soon as the request for a volunteer leaves her mouth, a voice from the back of the huddle offers themselves up. "Two singles," Robin repeats back with a nod. She knows exactly what to do. Her ghost types will steal the spotlight effortlessly. She pulls out Gengar's pokeball. Her second-oldest partnership, the tricky ghost type was a good opener to through her opponent off. Gengar, however, did not have a penchant for listening to her, but her pokemon largely fought well on their own without direction. She put her hands on her hips with unearned confidence, ready to watch.

Well, perhaps that went against the spirit of a trainer battle. She straightened up and thought about his moveset. What would be a good first move? "Gen, let's start by leaving 'em unable to think straight." Her instruction was clear enough, but... Without a care for who Annalise threw out, Gengar would use shadow ball as his opening gambit.

annalise has already chosen her two pokemon ahead of time, so she reaches for the first as robin coello picks her own. her iron leaves appears on her side of the field, its movements jerky and mechanical as its internal engine hums to life. as more paradox pokemon appear on hoenn, it's important for rangers to know how to handle them. [break][break]"psyblade."[break][break]the psychic-type launches forward, the shadow ball breaking against its robotic body and hissing against its plates into wisps of smoke. the leaves on its neck extend into sharpened blades as it slices at the ghost-type.[break][break]"these robotic pokemon are known as paradox pokemon," she educates as the match begins, far more rote and monotonous with her lectures than she used to be. [break][break]"they're highly aggressive and unpredictable, and often appear from interdream mist that form from cracks in the ground. if you see interdream mist, report it through the rangers' network immediately."

Robin hadn't been this close to a paradox pokemon since searching ruins with Greyson. It was stunning to see them as the strange texture of their forms was oddly alluring. But she found her appreciation dulled as Iron Leaves pulled a shriek from Gengar. "Gen, use hypnosis!" Robin's strategy had been for confuse ray or hypnosis to inflict a status on Annalise's pokemon to give them a leg-up, but Gengar was resistant to the idea again.

Gengar used dark pulse instead, to Robin's chagrin. Perhaps it was her fault for letting her pokemon fight without her coordination in the past; she rarely ever instructed them and instead let their instincts take over, as she had little familiarity with type interactions. Her face was warm in embarrassment, but hopefully she could sell that Gengar acting differently from her callout was a part of her strategy to throw her opponent off. "Keep 'em guessing, Gen!"

robin coello commands one thing, but gengar does another. annalise makes a mental note of it with a quizzical tilt of her head, looking between the flushed trainer and her pokemon. the dark pulse ripples through the confined space between the two pokemon, latching itself to the hinges of metal joints and slowing the paradox pokemon's movements. [break][break]the robotic pokemon doesn't express pain, but the wear-and-tear is evident after both attacks. [break][break]"that was very creative," annalise praises, accepting the other trainer's ploy at face value. "the less your opponent knows about your next move, the better."[break][break]she lets the iron leaves calculate its next move, running through algorithms within seconds. unsurprisingly, it chooses psyblade again. a psychic horn erupts from its forehead, sharpened by the mind wielding it. with a whir of machinery, it tucks its chin and jabs the psyblade at the gengar.

Robin's excitement at Annalise's praise is short-lived; Gengar can't evade the fast paradox pokemon at this range and eats the psyblade, fainting with a cry. Robin returns him to his pokeball. She isn't sure what strategy to take on the paradox mon. She's sure from its appearance that it's a steel type, but she has never learned type match-ups.

Her only move is to bring her other pokemon out, so she releases Dragapult. "You've got a crowd, Dragapult. Let's impress 'em! Show off your rush." Dragapult, thankfully, obeys. He uses dragon rush at the iron leaves, though his movements lack some finesse. The dragon was rather clumsy, though he always motivated to keep going and had, thus far, made a great companion for a Ranger.

annalise has no comment on the clumsiness of robin coello 's second pokemon. some things only come with practice, including the finesse with which the dragapult executes his moves. still, she offers an encouraging smile to the girl across the battlefield when her iron leaves is struck. [break][break]its damaged inner workings whine as it struggles to stand, so she recalls it. [break][break]"nice work!" [break][break]her ceruledge is her second pokemon to be called out. a shadow portal spreads out in a halo across the ground at the ghost-type's feet. without instruction from annalise, it abruptly dives down into the dark. [break][break]it reappears behind robin coello , drawing gasps from the young rangers in the crowd as it points its blade at her. the flames are close enough to be uncomfortable, but not burn.[break][break]"the people you meet in war don't fight fair."[break][break]they're fighting for survival, just as these rangers must learn to. [break][break]"being unpredictable like our volunteer will do you a lot of good in battle, but the most important thing is practice. enroll in battle classes, fight gym trainers, get self-defense training — all these things will prepare you better for situations like this." [break][break]with a motion of her hand, her ceruledge lowers her blade. the battle is over.

Dragapult rescues Gengar's performance, but both her dragon and herself have little time to assess the new competition before the dark bipedal pokemon is moving like lightning. It ends up behind her, and she turns to see its blade pointed at her.

Dragapult's approach is too slow to do much, but Robin gestures for him to stop with an open palm thrown behind her, staring down the blade as Annalise begins to explain. The battle is over. It was stupid of her to think of this as a standard battle. One of her first experiences in combat had been unfair, with her opponent using his pokemon against her just as much as against her pokemon. She can't forget almost being abducted on the water routes, nor the masked face of the Rocket who'd done it all without hesitation...

Dragapult whines and pulls Robin back. She turns to face Annalise as she finishes her lesson. "More practice it is," she concedes with a smile, returning Dragapult to his capsule. Self-defense classes were a great idea, too. She had taken riding lessons from Josh and learned a lot about survival from the likes of Ollie and Shalin, but she needed make sure she was sharp as her pokemon.

"Thank you for the lesson." It's odd to think that she's being tasked with fighting unfairly... or at least, preparing for it. She need to learn the rules for traditional combat, then how to subvert it. She made a decision to not be glum about it and pointed at Annalise with unearned confidence. "I'll be back for some classes. And when I've learned enough, I'll be back for a rematch." She grinned, eager to prove herself.
