He knew a lot about Pokémon. He knew just how smart some Pokémon could be. Alakazam and Metagross were usually the first Pokémon that people thought about when it came to smart psychic type Pokémon. That didn't mean other Pokémon lacked in the smarts department.

Which was why when he had heard of an Oranguru pretending to be a trainer and challenging people to Pokémon battles with Pokémon he had swiped, he wasn't overly surprised. No, what surprised him was that someone would be careless enough to allow their Pokémon to be stolen. Seriously, how could someone be so careless?

Shaking away thoughts of people not being careful enough to avoid their Pokémon from being swiped by another Pokémon, he returned to the task at hand.

Realizing they had drifted off course when he had been lost in thought, he flushed in embarrassment and corrected their flight path.

Soon after, they would reach their destination and he would find himself at the entrance of Meteor Falls.

Upon landing, he would return his Swellow to her Pokéball and look around to see if his partner was around. His partner was someone he had actually already met, but it was before he had decided to pursue a career as a ranger.[break] robin coello

Robin was off Dragapult's back and stretching her arms overhead. She enjoyed riding far more after her last lesson with Josh. Dragapult was even responding positively to her direction, which she hadn't expected after letting him take the lead and do things his way for so long. "Here ya go," she said as she offered him an oran berry to snack on. If he didn't have snacks, he would start licking anything in the environment, and she really didn't want her partner to witness that behavior.

Speaking of, she turned to see him coming on his Swellow. "Long time, no see!" She cried out as he landed, waving excitedly. She was very proud of herself for just earning her cadet status as a Ranger, denoted with her differently-colored armband. She didn't draw attention to it, though, as she was far more interested in what he'd been up to since they last met. "I'm glad it's you and me against anything psychic. Those pokemon still have it out for me, I swear."

She shivered. Psychic types in the wild were always hostile to her. "Is it an Oranguru we're looking for? The report I got was vague."

Seeing Robin, he greeted her. "Hello Robin, how have you been?" he asked after returning Mistral to her Pokéball. It seemed like forever ago since they had last met and interacted. But he was well aware that it had actually only been a few months. Because of that, he was interested in how the older ranger had been faring, as well as what she had been up to.

As she mentioned psychic Pokémon having it out for her, he couldn't help but be curious. What could make all Pokémon of one type respond like that? It wasn't something that could be explained away with science.

"Just wild ones, I assume," he said at last, his thoughts going to his Wyrdeer, who happened to be one of his most laidback Pokémon.

Her question pulled him out of his thoughts, and he released Mirage from his Pokéball before responding. "Yeah, it's an Oranguru. Apparently, the Oranguru snatched someone's Pokémon and has been using the stolen Pokémon to challenge trainers to Pokémon battles and beat them. Our job is to track down the Oranguru, beat him at his own game, and return the Pokémon to their rightful owner."[break] robin coello

"No complaints," she answered. Things had been going well for lately, though she had been sick at the beginning of the month, and she hadn't cared for how loopy it had made her. She considered what he said about the Oranguru carefully. He was using other pokemon like chess pieces rather than fighting directly. "It's strange that he's weaponizing other pokemon..." Where would it get the idea for such behavior? Was it watching Rockets?

She didn't have long to wonder. An earthquake shook the ground beneath them. Then, a Dugtrio arrived, showing its heads just a few meters from where the Rangers were standing around. Robin nearly fell from the suddenness of the attack, but Dragapult stood on his hand legs to push her back to standing. "Get 'im, Draga." The Dragapult used dragon rush, but the Dugtrio ducked back underground. "Ugh, I hate ground types. They're always one-trick ponytas."

She snapped her fingers; Dragapult quickly returned to her side and she mounted again, getting a few meters into the sky to avoid any surprise attacks. "I don't see... hm, if I were an Oranguru, where would I be?" The area looked largely deserted.

As she brought up the strange behavior of the Oranguru, he shrugged. He couldn't give her an answer to that question. No telling. It was entirely possible that it had just gotten curious by seeing trainers coming and going through its territory. After all, to a wild Pokémon, it might seem like the people that used their Pokémon for battle were weaponizing them.

A rumble broke him out of his thoughts, and it was only due to quick reflexes that he was able to stay standing. From his peripheral vision, he could see Robin didn't quite manage, only managing not to completely fall down due to her Dragapult keeping her from falling.

"I don't know if I would go that far, but you're pretty correct when it comes to Diglett and Dugtrio," he said with a small shrug. Both could be pretty annoying to battle, but some might say the same about bird Pokémon as well, considering the fact they could just fly out of range of an attack if they timed it right.

The question gave him pause, and he hesitated before releasing Royal from his Poké Ball. "Get somewhere that has a good vantage point and see if you can locate what we're looking for. We're looking for an Oranguru; he'll have Poké Balls on him. If you see him, signal us and take the lead."

Once the Glameow had gone off to do as he was told, he turned his attention to Robin. "Royal has Keen Eye as an ability, so if anyone can locate him, it'll be him, as long as the Oranguru isn't too far away anyway," the white-haired teen explained.[break] robin coello

She wouldn't have picked a Glameow to hunt down a pokemon, but his explanation made perfect sense. "Keen Eye... I'll need to invest in such a handy ability, too." She made a mental note to hunt one down. She kept her eye on his pokemon from the sky, pleased when the Glameow seemed to alert. "Ah, I see him!"

Oranguru was hiding underneath a Tropius in a patch of trees, and from above, Robin couldn't have made him out. "Let's show him what happens to thieves!" It was an odd case of a pokemon being the abuser, but that didn't change how wrong it was to steal pokemon. Dragapult dove down sharply; Robin jumped from him to grab onto the Tropius' neck, clinging and slowly sliding down as Dragapult used dragon rush on the Oranguru.

The Tropius, compelled by Oranguru's psychic abilities, shook violently to try and throw Robin off. "Oof, it's like physical assessment all over again," she complained as she held on tightly.

"It's a pretty handy ability. Of course, there are other Pokémon that can have the ability. My suggestion is, unless you plan on keeping a Glameow, not to go for a Glameow for the ability," he said, seeming to be on the same line of thinking as she was.

Before she could inquire as to why, he continued. "Once it evolves into Purugly, it'll lose the ability. It's not an ability that a Purugly can have."

Finally, it seemed Royal had found the little troublemaker, and upon hearing the older ranger, he nodded. Trusting Royal to meet up with them, he urged Mirage to make his way to where the psychic-type Pokémon was.

As Robin jumped off her Dragapult and onto the Tropius, he was a bit caught off guard. Especially when she decided to slide down its neck lines like a fire pole.

As the Tropius tried to shake her off, thanks to the Oranguru, he mentally shook himself. He joined his companion in getting off his own Pokémon before ordering Mirage to target the Oranguru.[break] robin coello

She made a mental note about Purugly -- good looking out on Absalom's end, as she hadn't thought about pokemon losing their ability. Keen Eye hadn't seemed like one a pokemon should lose... ah, but what did she know. She hung on tight while Tropius tried to toss her off. Robin fell after a few moments, hitting the ground hard. The impact forced a pokeball from her belt, releasing Marshadow.

Marshadow came out swinging like always, hitting Tropius with sucker punch. Robin scrambled to her feet and got distance from the Tropius. She released her Ninetails, who used blizzard to slow Tropius down and make him uncomfortable with the sharp temperature change. "Hold Tropius off until Oranguru is handled!" She instructed, letting her pokemon keep the mind-controlled pokemon at bay.

Mirage would start by using Shadow Sneak to appear behind the Oranguru before hitting it from behind with a Foul Play, causing the Oranguru to turn its attention to the Hisuian Zoroark. This would create an opening for Royal, who had returned to his trainer's side, to hit it from behind with a Night Slash.

It was clear that it was a bit overwhelmed by dealing with super effective moves being used against it. Realizing it might try to flee along with the stolen Pokémon, he directed Mirage to go for one final attack - a Foul Play that would knock out the psychic type.

Picking up the dropped Poké Ball, he returned the Tropius to its Poké Ball before handing it over to Robin. "We should call a team out here to ensure the Oranguru gets to safety. It's not safe to leave a Pokémon fainted like this where any wild Pokémon could come along and attack it," he pointed out.

"Anyway, that Tropius belongs to our client. We should report back that we succeeded in getting the Pokémon back and give the Tropius back to its rightful owner. Hopefully, this will teach the client to keep a better hold on their Pokémon."[break] robin coello

Things came to a close at last. Absalom's pokemon were well-matched against the psychic. As Oranguru's power lost its hold on Tropius, the grass type immediately calmed. Robin patted his shoulder comfortingly. "All better, big guy?" She rejoined with Absalom with a big smile. She loved a happy ending, but more importantly, she was really glad such a dangerous psychic type was handled. She wasn't sure why a wild pokemon would act this way unprompted.

"I'm a little worried this is evidence of Rocket smuggling. It seems to be their MO to use psychic assaults to control pokemon for sale later." But Absalom was right about leaving the Oranguru alone -- it was too dangerous. "I'll call it in. It needs to be examined for any tampering given how unusual its behavior has been." She pinged a pick-up team with her Rotom phone and left a comment about her suspicions.

She considered Absalom's assessment of the trainer who lost their Tropius. "I wish Rocket had less of a hold here. Then, people wouldn't need to be so extra-cautious." She wished more than anything that she could clear Hoenn from their devious deeds.
