There was nothing to say.

"You saved my life." Howard's voice was soft, containing all of the warmth that Regice lacked. He hugged her close, resting her head on his shoulder. "Thanks for saving my friend, for saving me. We would've died without your help."

Shred would've died on that battlefield if they hadn't been warped away. The beast's desire to complete Kyurem had overwhelmed his desire for preservation, and it had almost cost him his life. History had been painted with the dried blood of the dead, so how did one measure the value of a life?

Simple.

Eris and Shred's lives were invaluable.

In its hole, Regirock stirred. It slowly extracted itself from the cave as it rumbled, its latent Dynergy giving it motion. If it could escape from the Distortion World, it could rouse itself from a thrashing. It rose, and Howard rose with it, putting Eris behind him.

"Leave. You cannot win. Go fulfill your objective, Regirock." Mesprit and Regice blocked it from reaching Howard and Eris. "You have a land to protect."

Without a word, it turned and lumbered away.

With nothing to gain out of aggressing those that would not attack unprovoked, Regirock bumbles away. And with nothing to pull their attention away, the unnecessary thoughts begin to swarm. In the moment while he still stands in front of her, she clutches at the hem of Howard's shirt, clinging on just so that he can't turn to look her in the eye.[break][break]

As Regirock lumbered away, Regice beeped after it. It extended a hand towards its fellow construct.

⠺⠁⠊⠞. ⠚⠕⠊⠝? The query hung in the air, translated into a language none but the golems could understand. An ancient braille that was impossible to translate and impossible to comprehend. The communication was received. ⠙⠑⠋⠑⠝⠙ ⠓⠕⠍⠑?

Silence. Regirock stopped and turned. Its pattern did not beep, but the answer was clear. ⠝⠕.

It lumbered off into the darkness, leaving Howard and Eris alone with their Pokémon. When Eris asked about Shred's condition, Howard's eye twitched as he pondered it. How did he describe Shred's condition?

"He's alive." That's all he could say.

But he wasn't. Shred had died on that day, and what was left was a hateful ghoul, desperately trying to recomplete himself. Kyurem had broken him. Palkia had broken him. Howard had broken him. All that was left were the remnants of those failures.

"He'll improve. Come on." Howard gave a weary sigh. "Let's go."

"They'll come back when they're ready." She knows not if her words hold meaning for this titan, but she will not fear the cold as she totters up and reaches to give it a soft pat. One matched by Mesprit with a solemn chirp. "Don't be sad."[break][break]

Can it feel sadness? It's dangerous to assume the thoughts of a legend that she cannot comprehend, but she reckons that it must be able to feel things to some extent like people do.[break][break]

"If there's ever anything I can do to help..." Be it for Dread Threatening or Regice. "I'll try my best."[break][break]

In response, the Regice only beeps. There's no room in its soul for a connection to this young girl. It longs for it, but there is simply no room.

There is not enough power to form a connection. It has always been woefully underpowered since it first reassembled from the ice shards that Howard had salvaged from the Island Cave. It was a mere shadow of its former self, but so was Regirock. The two were equal. Where was Registeel? Where was Regidrago? Where was Regieleki?

Where was mother? Where was father?

"Eris, you've done more than you'll ever know." Howard's eye blinked slowly, clearly weary from the excitement. "We need to get back, before it decides to try us again. You can try to talk with Regice some more, if you keep it a secret."

A secret. How many of those had been made by now?

The two returned to the surface.
