Nomi ran delicate fingers over the smooth crystal, marveling at the sight before her. She had never seen so many Tera crystals in one place before, blanketing the walls and ground like an ethereal, softly glowing moss. Her skin prickled as an undercurrent of potent possibility - like the anticipatory feeling before a storm - washed through her. She shivered, glancing at Mîr, who's illumina glow seemed to compliment the crystals, causing the ones nearest to pulse brightly as if in greeting.[break][break]
There was some inherent connection between Tera energy, the dream mist, and the Unown...Nomi was sure of it.[break][break]
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" She commented to the man next to her, an unbidden smile spreading across her lips. She knew he shared her love of discovery. Here, before them, was a seemingly endless supply of research opportunities. What would they be able to learn from such a vast network of Tera crystals?[break][break]
"Let's see if we can go a little deeper," she suggested, navigating her way through the maze of sharp angles and reflective surfaces. Beneath her feet, the ground began to slope subtly downwards.[break][break]

Lugia's wings cast long shadows across the breathtaking landscape of cliffs and caverns. Sparkling waterfalls plunge into unknown depths, and Pokémon that shouldn't exist stalk these lands as their own.[break][break]

Beautiful, Naomi Sato calls it.[break][break]

Terrifying, Cillian thinks, yet he can't deny the enchanting allure of its unexplored depths. Though Hoenn has taught him to be wary of all that he doesn't understand, he remains a scientist at heart.[break][break]

He smiles back at her, genuine if a little tight.[break][break]

"Yeah."[break][break]

She suggests venturing forth and Cillian nods, taking careful steps in case the ground beneath their feet proved more unstable than it seemed. Once he was assured that it would not crumble beneath them, his pace gains more confidence.[break][break]

He takes pictures on his phone as he goes, identifying landmarks.

Though she did not share her companion's trepidation, it was something of a comfort to know that Lugia was watching their backs from above. Nomi glanced up, sensing her PRESSURE, a blanket of protection that weighed heavily upon the foreign landscape.[break][break]
Cillian's terse reply did not bother Nomi. She was accustomed to his brooding silence, the way he kept his emotions close to his chest. She let him observe in quiet contemplation as she continued forward into the cavern. It was eerily quiet - perhaps too quiet - the only sound the soft footfalls of the two Rockets as they did their best to traverse the newly uncovered crystal realm.[break][break]
"Cillian," Nomi began, after a time. Her tone was even, but her chest tightened with a sudden anticipation. The moment had come to discuss with him her focus as of late - and, if necessary, the work she had been doing to try and win the League to her side.[break][break]
"I'm worried about the DRK Triad. I fear we are running out of time to prevent them from destroying our world."[break][break]

Cillian appreciates her willingness to let him brood in silence; she understood him, more than most. It's why, when she finally breaks that spell of quiet, he looks to her with fondness rather than irritation.[break][break]

That fond glance shifts to something grim as she shares her concerns.[break][break]

"I am, too." He does not often share his fears, but Naomi Sato has helped him through too much to be denied this truth in her own time of concern. "I assume they came for you, too, during the winter?" He'd since found that many among their number had been subject to their trials. He's not sure if they'd targeted League, too, but he certainly wouldn't be surprised. "I don't like that they were stress-testing the bounds of our universe. If they're trying to figure out what can change, it's for a reason."[break][break]

Though it had seemed little more than pointless torture and mind-games when he'd first woke from the not-dream, now he appreciates the threat of it all.[break][break]

"We've stopped the world's destruction before." He laughs, but it's not in humour. What a funny thing to say, as if they were discussing nothing more daunting than the weather. "But if we don't know what the threat is, how are we to stop it?"

She nodded, her own expression equally grim. Yes, they had come for her too - and they had showed her a cruel mockery of her current mission, what she might have become had they found her before Rocket.[break][break]
Cillian Quinn had been one of the very first Rockets to take her under his wing, to invest in her work, to notice her potential. He was also the person who had, in the end, been able to show her exactly what had happened to her parents - as horrible as that had been for the both of them. In that alternate timeline, that other universe, he had appeared in the vision Holo had shown her - and she had not recognized him. It had saddened her, even though it had not surprised her, to realize there was at least one version of herself that did not know Cillian, could not appreciate that he had never wanted people like her parents to be killed for their failures.[break][break]
"I don't like it, either," she agreed. "For now, they seem to be collecting data, but at some point, they will choose to act on it."[break][break]
Eventually, they came to a crossroads. A massive glittering column of crystal stood before them, as if guarding the narrow passages. Nomi stared up at it thoughtfully.[break][break]
"I do think, Cillian," she offered carefully. "That we would have a better chance of learning more about the threat of the DRK Triad, if we weren't so preoccupied with opposing the League."[break][break]

He does not miss the careful approach in her tone. His guard goes up immediately, half-expecting this to be something to do with Isaac Merlo, or perhaps even Lulu Flint. He had no idea what the two women he considered sisters, one of blood and the other of bond, said about him while he was not around. The thought is disquieting, and quickly dismissed, especially when Nomi elaborates.[break][break]

His lips press together, a subtle show of displeasure. But Lugia's PRESSURE remains a constant, and he does not seem angry.[break][break]

Tired, perhaps.[break][break]

"An old argument," he replies, after a long pause for thought. "And one better broached with declan walsh, though I don't think you'll get any further than you will with me. The day Rocket stops fighting is the day we lose to them."[break][break]

When they'd been hidden, a shadow organization operating as such, they might've afforded the luxury of a lull in that fight. But with the League aware of their presence, and the threat they posed... to back down was to show their throats for the kill.[break]

"We tried to implore the Boss to reconsider the plans surrounding the meteor, remember?" He shakes his head. "But it worked out. Following his lead. And as his underboss, that's my job. Question him, but don't defy him."[break][break]

Declan would entertain his words, his opinions, but he would not tolerate defiance.[break][break]

"But I know you." He isn't looking at her, instead marveling at the crystal as she does. "You wouldn't bring this up if you didn't already have some kind of plan. Some idea forming in that brilliant brain of yours." A sigh, half fond and half sad. "Be careful, Nomi."[break][break]

I don't want to see you hurt. And, worse, I don't want to be the one that has to hurt you.

Cillian Quinn was not a man prone to outbursts of emotion. Instead, whatever feelings he carried were often hidden beneath the hardened exterior of a Rocket Underboss, the cruelty of Kanto coloring their influence. But Nomi could hear the sorrow in his tone, beneath the quiet caution he risked exhibiting - for her.[break][break]
She knew that his brotherhood came at a price. He was loyal to declan walsh, not to love. In the end, he would hurt her if he was ordered to, and she knew it. The breaking of her heart would be of little consequence.[break][break]
She hoped it would not come to that.[break][break]
"There won't be a Hoenn to rule if the DRK Triad destroys it," she whispered softly, matter-of-fact. She, too, knew a thing or two about tempering her emotions. "I am loyal to Rocket, Cillian. But sometimes loyalty looks like compromise. Sometimes there is wisdom in setting aside one war to ensure you can survive another."[break][break]
She contemplated the smooth surface of the massive crystal. Holding out a hand, she pressed her palm to it. It was unexpectedly warm - and if she closed her eyes, she could feel a faint pulsing. Like a heartbeat.[break][break]
"We don't have to stop fighting," she emphasized. "We just need to fight a different enemy, for a time. The League needs to do the same. Our combined strength would be enough to stop them."[break][break]
Somewhere deeper in the cavern, a keening wail could be heard - an appropriate soundtrack for their conversation, perhaps.[break][break]
"If I could win the trust of the League Commissioner, do you think Walsh would listen? Would he be able to see the advantage of a temporary truce, if the Visionary had the League in her pocket?"[break][break]
Regardless of whether she would actually betray any promises made to dahlia goode, if the opportunity for future manipulation could be used to secure Walsh's buy-in, that might make all the difference.[break][break]

He had no desire to die, nor to see their region do the same. Survival was the driving force behind every choice Cillian has made in his Rocket career. This, too, was one such choice.[break][break]

His eyes widen at mention of the commissioner, betraying his concern before the mask slips back into place.[break][break]

"I think you should tell him that you wish to sway her to your way of thinking, and not me." Like the crystal before them, his heart beats, though it carries the rapid pace of rising panic. "This isn't a secret I can afford to keep, Nomi."[break][break]

He'd turned Rowan Wrynn in not because he'd wanted to, but because he was obligated to. It was not called a chain of command without reason; he'd quickly choke if he rebelled against such obligation.[break][break]

"I think," he says carefully, quelling his anxiety as best he could, "that if anyone can convince him, it would be you. Your connection with the Unown is the closest thing we have to a tool against the Triad. Leverage it, but be careful."[break][break]

His Rotom zips around the TERA CRYSTAL, capturing its multicoloured angles.[break][break]

She considered him, every tragic angle of his history, how loyalty was the only language he was willing to speak. Such a subjective thing: for was it not in Rocket's best interest to survive?[break][break]
But, Cillian trusted her, and he truly believed she had a chance of swaying Walsh - one way or another. If anyone can convince him, it would be you. She could not afford to doubt herself, not even for a second. If she allowed her conviction to waver, she would risk getting trampled by the festering grudges that already had so many of her peers - and their League counterparts - in a tight chokehold.[break][break]
They were frozen in place, and she needed all of them to move. Otherwise, they were sitting Duckletts.[break][break]
"Then I will go to him," she promised, leaving out the fact that if she was able to secure a meeting with the League Commissioner prior to an appointment with Walsh, she would still take it. There simply wasn't enough time to pick and choose. Delays could cost them another of their cities, another potential Avatar legendary, or worse...[break][break]
"And now," she added softly, eyes following the Rotom's erratic movement pattern. "I will stop talking to you about my plans. So that nobody can force you to betray me."[break][break]
I won't do that to you, she vowed.[break][break]
"Just promise me this, Cillian." She faced him again, expression resolute. "When the real war begins, we're going to need you - and Lugia. The DRK Triad fears the Avatars for a reason. They cannot accurately predict how we will affect our own fate. That means it's not hopeless."[break][break]
She smiled, bearing teeth.[break][break]
"We can defeat them."

Cillian nods, grave relief etched into his expression. He would afford her a reasonable amount of time to approach the Boss herself before he was forced to confess to this conversation; hopefully, in understanding the urgency of his position, she would not delay more than was necessary.[break][break]

A frown deepens the lines around his eyes.[break][break]

"I don't do promises."[break][break]

They were such fragile things, so easily broken, and with them the trust they afforded. He would not give her false hope. But as she elaborates on her request, his stern expression softens.[break][break]

He could promise nothing, but he could, at least, speak truthfully of this: "Loyalty to Rocket doesn't make me toothless, Nomi. I've fought the Triad before, and I'll do it again. I won't defy orders," he adds, with a very pointed, serious look, "but I don't think a man of Walsh's intelligence would order me to die. He's had his opportunity to have me out of the picture, should he have wished me dead." It was something he didn't talk of often, but it was written between the lines of his report on the Mt. Pyre incident during METENO. declan walsh had saved his life. And whether he simply understood the value of Cillian's power and position or truly respected him, the result was the same: they were on the same side.[break][break]

A sharp, sudden laugh bubbles in his throat.[break][break]

"And no one — not me, and certainly not Walsh — will stop Lugia from doing whatever the hell she wants."

Cillian barked out a laugh, and Nomi couldn't help but smile. He was right, of course: no legendary Pokemon could be controlled. Lugia might be allied with Cillian - with Rocket - but she could change her mind at a moment's notice, should she feel inclined to seek some new partnership, goal, or outcome. She was the essence of storm and sea, sky and shadow - she would not be held back by humanity's childish whims.[break][break]
But what do the Gods really want? Nomi wondered, thinking of Elisabeth Fiorelli and her ruinous snail. All of them sought some measure of influence over this universe, she knew - but they were a group of complex beings with interpersonal affinities and oppositions that Nomi was only just beginning to grasp.[break][break]
"Well, when the time comes, I hope she'll give them hell," Nomi chuckled, inclining her head in respect - a Johtonian custom she had never managed to shake. Lugia was not physically present within the cave, but Nomi knew she could sense them all the same.[break][break]
She regarded the massive crystal before them once more, a pillar of untapped potential - of concentrated majesty.[break][break]
"I'm going to take a sample from this one," she decided, crouching down to open her pack. "Watch my back."[break][break]
She knew he would.[break][break]
