Entering Area Zero was a little overwhelming. Oscar had heard that it was a unique biome, but when he and Lulu actually stepped foot into the cave system he was taken aback. It looked like an alien planet, the abundant tera crystals beaming with technicolor brilliance in every direction. He was briefly at a loss for worlds, not since his first venture to the Moon had he been so excited to explore.

"This is--crazy." He said, his voice trailing off as he stepped forward. He walked up to the nearest wall of crystals, sliding a gloved hand over its smooth surface. "I've never seen Tera Crystals be this size before. There were some big ones in Ultra Space but this is--unreal." One thousand questions swarmed Oscar's head, all of which could only be answered by pushing further into Area Zero.

Oscar turned to his companion, "Let's get moving, I can't wait to see what this place has in store for us."

she obliged to get moving, and her genesect accompanied them. its violet chrome head on a swivel, eyes like the attentive rubies of sleeping police lights on patrol.[break][break]

”the new paradoxes coming from here look like legendary pokemon. they’re stronger than the others…”[break][break]

she turned, marveling at the beautiful, horrific cave. prismatic light danced across her face and glowed in her awestruck eyes.[break][break]

”the more tera crystal there is together, the more powerful it becomes,“ she concluded, gaze falling on oscar with concern. ”and it’s only growing faster and faster…”[break][break]

Oscar turned back to put his hands on the crystal wall. "The more powerful it becomes..." he mused as he gently rubbed the surface. "If only we could harness that power for something other than make hats." He knew Amor Rose was working on some projects with Tera Energy. He should pay him a visit some time to check on his progress.

Oscar's examination of the wall was interrupted by the cry of an unknown pokemon. It was loud and bizarre, echoing across the passages of the cave. Oscar sneered, suddenly having the urge to delve deeper into Area Zero. "C'mon, let's see if we can locate our vocal friend."

Oscar tried to stay alongside Lulu, but he would keep getting distracted when they came upon robust crystal structures. He was just astounded that Tera Crystals could grow into such a variety of shapes, their knowledge of the mineral was far more lacking than he anticipated. Every time he got distracted, Oscar would eventually realize his mistake and run to catch up to Lulu. "We simply must build a lab down here." Oscar would say while catching up for the third time. "Imagine the technology we could power using all of these cry--oh."

They had come upon a new chamber, and to say that it was massive was a severe understatement. It was large enough to hold all of Mauville City, nearly as vast as the chasms just above them. Countless platforms of stone and crystal dotted the titanic cave--all leading deeper still into Area Zero. Oscar blinked as he forced back his amazement.

"How do we--where do we start?"

hats. it threw her off for a moment, her brow furrowing. then, she realized he must have meant the crystal crowns that appeared from nowhere onto the heads of affected pokemon. it was a strange and beautiful phenomenon.[break][break]

the cry caught her attention too, and her gaze turned quickly in the direction it seemed to come from – deeper within area zero. after agreeing, the two scientists headed towards it together. she studied the crystal formations as much as he did, and while it slowed their journey, it felt meaningful.[break][break]

she found the crystal somewhat sickening to behold in such abundance, like an omen. it was the same gut feeling she’d once had about the unown – and still did, in a way, though such concern had been suppressed to show faith in Naomi Sato .[break][break]

”let’s do it, then,” she agreed anyways about the lab. rocket had set up several other stations throughout the chasm. it was feasible, and though she didn’t trust that the crystal was safe, it did nothing to drive her away from its mysteries.[break][break]

when their exploration led them to the new chamber, there was a chilling sensation that accompanied her dread – and with it, an unexpected wave of excitement. she found herself wondering, darkly, if the end would be so beautiful, like the crystal, and oscar’s hats.[break][break]

would they know when their world died, or would they already be so lost to their dreams that they would pleasantly drown in desires and sweet memories, none the wiser?[break][break]

”i don’t think it matters,” she nearly whispered, in awe.[break][break]

incredible.[break][break]

from below, another cry echoed. ”that was the same thing as before, wasn't it?” despite the expanse of the area before them, she also noted, "it seemed closer that time..."[break][break]

The second appearance of the roar shocked Oscar, not expecting to hear it so soon. The possibility of discovering a new pokemon ignited his adventurer's spirit, and he was determined more than ever to forge forward. "What are we waiting for then?" Oscar pulled a pure red pokeball off of his belt and opened it to let out Prime the Genesect. The blackened cyborg took a brief inventory of its surroundings as Oscar tried to figure out the cleanest route of descent. It paused to take note of its fellow Genesect, it was tempted to try and communicate with it as it had with Tempest Quinn 's Genesect--but perhaps now was not a good time.

Oscar pointed diagonally toward the bottom-left side of the chamber. "I think I see tracks over there. Let's head down and take a look." Prime hopped into the air to transform into its hoverboard form (Magnet Rise), floating close enough to Oscar to allow him to hop on. Oscar would wait for Lulu to be ready before flying toward the supposed tracks.

As they neared the floor, what Oscar thought to be tracks would get clearer. They were lucky that the floor was not too far down, Oscar imagined floating into a deeper abyss with nothing to be found but darkness and gnarled teeth. Would he even bother exploring the chamber's floor if he could not already see it? Useless what ifs, Oscar purged his mind of gratuitous thought as they reached their destination.

"Hmmm, this can't be right." Oscar hopped off of Prime and bent down to examine the tracks. They appeared to be--swerving lines? Like the wheels of a bike had come by. Oscar sighed, "It looks like someone beat us here. Don't know why they'd bring a fuckin' bike in here though."

the purple reproduction waved at its origin as it had seen penrose wave at most things – only this was prime, the one covered in the cool flames. the first of them all.[break][break]

lulu climbed onto her genesect a bit more carefully than oscar boarded his own, staying low and holding onto the sides tight as they made their descent. maybe she’d try getting better at it one day.[break][break]

after stepping off her genesect, she inspected the tracks alongside her colleague. a finger went up to her chin thoughtfully.[break][break]

”cyclizar could have made these tracks too.”[break][break]

she recalled the rks simulation with Zev Harcourt , when they’d ridden them like motorcycles through an apocalyptic city. and, come to think of it, the simulation after had also featured. bike-like pokemon.[break][break]

”or that new one from the rks system. miraidon.”[break][break]

Oscar gave Lulu a puzzled look. "A what and what?" The pokemon Lulu had described were foreign to Oscar, this was the first time he had heard of either. Oscar's face suddenly lightened up, this uncertainty provided an uncommon opportunity. "Oh fuck yes, one second!" Oscar pulled out his phone and began frantically tapping through his apps. When he came upon what he desired, he would let out a giggle fueled by childlike anticipation.

After a few seconds, Oscar would tilt his head. "Oh! See that explains it, this guy's from Paldea. I haven't kept up with those guys--which is why I downloaded this!" Oscar turned his screen toward Lulu, revealing the interface for a phone-based pokedex. Oscar had never owned a pokedex before, but he decided to pick up this app just in case he heard about one of those elusive Paldea pokemon. The opened entry depicted a rendering Cyclizar, as well as various stats that had been gathered over the past year.

"Oh shit check this out." Oscar pressed a button on the interface, prompting a robotic voice to start reading Cyclizar's pokedex entry.

Cyclizar: The Mount Pokemon

Cyclizar has a top speed of 70 mph. It has been used as a mode of transportation since ancient times.

Oscar giggled as he pulled back his phone. "It's just like the old models made in Kanto! Fuckin' wild right? Ugh, I've always wanted a real one." Oscar performed some more tapping, and after a few seconds of staring at his screen he would sigh and put the phone away. "No info on that--what did you call it? Mo-rai-don? Is it another form for Cyclizar?"

Suddenly the same cry they had been hunting sounded off once again, only this time it seemed very far off. Oscar eyes widened as he slowly realized the implications of this. "Holy shit! Whatever it is, it must be fast as hell. It almost sounds miles away now."

”cyclizar and miraidon,” she repeated. ”they’re like motorcycles, only pokemon.” and at this point, it felt less ridiculous to say so, as it would have not long ago.[break][break]

she looked over at his pokedex and nodded. ”that’s the one. the tera crystal seems connected to the appearance of paldean pokemon. maybe that’s why it’s down here?”

perhaps they would run into more regional variants scurrying out from the liminal space between universes.[break][break]

though she’d not been much of a trainer in kanto, there was still a sense of nostalgia that she felt from hearing the old pokedex’s voice. the corners of her lips curled at oscar’s enthusiasm. ”i haven’t seen one in years.”[break][break]

when he came up short on any info for moraidon, she shook her head, ”i’m not sure if miraidon really exists. or if it does, maybe not in our universe. yet.”[break][break]

”the cats here are fast too – but there is something else down here. worse than a cyclizar…” she didn’t finish the words, because they made little sense, but she thought, i can feel it.[break][break]

As if to highlight Lulu's words, the bizarre cry rang out again. It was even further this time, whatever this thing was had unnatural speed. Oscar suddenly had an uneasy feeling in his gut now, like when his brother told one too many scary stories around a campfire when he was a kid. It was a pointed paranoia, primal yet completely his own fault.

Oscar's mouth tilted into a thoughtful frown, "Suddenly I don't feel so well equipped for exploration." They had just gotten here, but already Oscar felt as though they had bitten off more than they could chew. "Maybe we should go get some extra supplies and come back another time. I don't want to get lost in here with whatever--that is."

Oscar gestured toward where the mysterious cry was coming from. He wanted nothing more than to encounter a new, powerful pokemon--but not if he was unprepared to face it. Area Zero was amazing, but the last thing he wanted was to die here because of some unknown predator. Oscar folded his arms and gazed at Lulu. "Unless--you think we can handle it? I trust your judgement."
