He had just finished a mission related to rangers when he received word that a rancher needed help rounding up his herd of Mareep. It seemed that their pen had been damaged, allowing them to escape into the surrounding wilderness. This could be dangerous if they were to encounter any predators or other hazards.

Still in his uniform, he wanted to go home and change, but he knew that helping the Mareep was a higher priority. Oh well, it looked like he would have to postpone changing into his usual clothes for a little while longer. At least until he could assist the rancher with his problem.

With his decision made, he guided Mirage, his Hisuian zoroark, away from the way they had been going changing direction and heading towards Route 110, where the ranch was located. Thanks to the map on his phone, it didn't take him long to reach the ranch. Shortly after arriving, he learned the full story and the direction he should start searching in.

However, he would have to wait. The ranch owner had requested the assistance of two people, concerned that the task might be too much for one person to handle alone.[break] Eris Halla

With a few more nails hammered in and wires laid out to prevent wild Lycanroc from sneaking in, she's just about finished repairing this section of the fence. And not a moment too soon.[break][break]

Just across the field, she can hear her name being called, a figure waving their arm at her as if gesturing for her to come on over.[break][break]

"I guess the other person's here, huh?"[break][break]

Gathering her tools into a toolbox, she whistles as she gets to her feet. And a Yamper scurries in between and around her legs, barking excitedly, taking off and stopping to check if she's following suit - A mindless cycle that never fails to draw a smile upon her lips.[break][break]

"I did the back of the pen, as promised!" Carefully handing the kit over to the ranch hand, she's given a brief moment to peek behind her and get a glimpse of the other volunteer. Young, small, can't possibly be any older than she is and wearing a ranger uniform...[break][break]

Well, she supposes that rounding up lost Mareep can't be that dangerous. The other rangers must be busy on some tera crystal cleanup and investigation, leaving the mundane jobs to their younger recruits.[break][break]

Eyja barks to catch her attention, tongue lolling as her chest heaves with every pant. Right, they should be getting a move on, shouldn't they? Leaning over the fence, she beckons for the stranger to step closer.[break][break]

It was a bit surprising that he had been beaten to the location. Though it wasn't like he knew for certain when the call for help had been put out. It still made him want to inquire whether or not he was late. He hated keeping people waiting, even if it wouldn't be his fault.

Watching the interaction between Eris and the ranch hand, he was a bit confused. How did someone her age know how to fix fences? It definitely wasn't a talent most kids knew. Or did they? Was it normal for kids to know how to patch fences? If so, perhaps he should learn. Without allowing his parents to find out, of course. Not that he thought his sister would tell them. As far as he knew, she hadn't even told them that he had started training as a ranger.

Still a bit wrapped up in his own thoughts about normal kid behavior, he simply nodded before guiding Mirage through the gate. Only when he had reached the other side did he speak. "I hope you haven't been waiting long," he said with a tone that implied he didn't like keeping people waiting.

Considering how many times predators have been fended off from the Mareep here, there isn't really any imminent threat that lurks around the area. Perhaps some toxic weeds or disgruntled Ampharos looking for their babies.[break][break]

"More than anything, we should probably try to track those Mareep." As she draws closer to the segment of the fence that she'd repaired, she does her best to hop over, landing on the other side with hands stretched out for balance. "It's been quite a few hours and none of them have wandered back."

Listening to what she had to say, he simply nodded. Pen repairs were good, though he felt something stronger should be kept in place. Anything from bad weather to predators could break into a pen if one wasn’t careful. He was just thankful this mission involved tracking down some Mareep and not what had killed them.

"Fixing fences though, is this... how did you come to know about repairing fences?" he inquired, barely keeping himself from asking if it was normal child behavior. He could hear his sister now, being careful about what he said. How saying certain things would get him strange looks.

As it was mentioned that they should focus on finding the Mareep, he nodded again before gesturing to a part of the fence. Guiding Mirage to jump over the fence, his gaze flickered briefly to the other teen. He felt a bit bad about remaining on the back of Mirage while she walked. He was well aware it was best to remain on the back of Mirage, but telling himself he would be fine as long as he didn’t push himself too hard, he swung himself off his back.

"You should rest a bit, Mirage," he said, looking straight ahead.

"Hmmm... that's problematic," he agreed as he took a Pokéball in hand, releasing a Swellow from its contents. "Mistral, take to the skies and see if you can see anything. We're looking for some missing Mareep. Alert us if you see anything."

Being free of school meant that she had much more free time than she knew what to fill it with. Turns out that picking up a few practical skills gets you pretty far when you least expect it.[break][break]

Whilst his Swellow searches the skies, Eyja remains bound to the ground. Briefly distracted by the flutter of feathers, then forced to get back to tracking the scent as they fly out of her reach. She's rather quiet whilst on the job, as compared to her usual barking self that might drive a certain Luxray up the walls. Perhaps, to avoid scaring off the Mareep should they chance upon them.[break][break]

In the mean time, the lack of conversational topics honestly puts Eris at ease. Neither pressured nor inclined to start, she simply soaks in the environment and all it has to offer. Downtrodden dirt patches, grazed patches of grass. They must be headed in the right direction.

“True enough, however, with my ranger trainer, my college classes, taking on the gym circuit, as well as any other extracurricular activities, it can be hard to find the time to learn new things,” he said, only sticking to part of the truth. Because the truth was, that was only part of it.

His parents wouldn’t allow him to do something they deemed dangerous, which would definitely include working with tools. They would undoubtedly already get an earful if they found out he was in training to be a ranger. They would definitely worry about him pushing himself too hard.

While he wanted to live his life to the fullest, perhaps it was best not to push things too far. And yet, he wanted to prove himself independent. And one good way to do that would be to learn to fix things.
