no cell service, of fucking course, but her stupid rocket-issued beeper works just fine. she doesn't know what any of the strings of beeps means. she had half a mind to toss it to the side as soon as she got it and the slap on the ass with the follow-up FOR THE GLORY OF ROCKET.

so she doesn't know that beep-beep-beep-beep means 'warning! enemies are nearby!'

amulius doesn't need some out of date pager tech to tell him that though, because he warbles a warning to parker and her companion right before they hear a crashing sound a quarter mile to their left.

"uhhh, the fuck was that?" she says, steel-blue eyes landing incredulously on alba.

Stoutland huffs at the various sounds and shadows of Area Zero, circling its trainer round and round again. It's a far cry from the places it's used to; everything is a potential danger, and so it takes to protecting its old charge.[break][break]

Alba is less cautious of his surroundings, though equally as attentive of them. The luster of Tera crystals reflects in his eyes… and apparently drowns out the sound of a beeping pager, as well.[break][break]

“Probably a Pokémon, right? Let's go check it out.” Mysterious crashing sound? Deep within a mysterious sprawling Tera cave, deep within the earth? They couldn't possibly just leave it alone.

parker wouldn't mind leaving it well enough alone. parker wouldn't mind doing a 180 and walking a thousand miles in the opposite direction from the terrible snarling, snurfling, shrieking sound. it must be another monster and she hates monsters.

at least this time she's armed with her mega friendship bracelet and the bathroom decorations that aren't actually cool rocks and are instead mega stones are strapped to her person. amulius has only gone all mega chicken once in his whole life, but she's pretty sure he's a master at it already.

and deep within the mysterious jungle what awaits them is...

"oh." a whole flock of them, wheeling around in the air and sounding just like the terrible, awful doggos that have been terrorizing so many unlucky shits down here.

"well, that's not so bad!" she says with a grin.

If something went bump in the night, and nobody was around to hear it, did it even make a sound? Wasn’t that sad? Was Parker really going to let all the horrible monsters’ hard work go to waste like that?[break][break]

"are you upset we didn't find murder-dogs?" she says, bewildered. but she can't really say she's surprised. rocket researchers are all a bunch of freaks. dorky, eyeball-loving, hot fucking freaks. she blinks away the visage of the dream girl that's escaping her every step of the way down here and resigns herself to their inevitable fate.

the tracks do not elicit much joy from parker's face, but she gives him a thumbs up and an enthusiastic (sarcastic) grin.

"time to go puppy hunting, i guess," she says with a sigh. "c'monnn. maybe we'll run into others too if we follow 'em."

“Of course. This is the biggest Tera Cave we’ve ever seen before, Parker! Imagine we come all the way down here, and all we see are some birds!” Not to be confused with the kind of bird haunting Parker’s mind that very moment.[break][break]

But the birds of both varieties would be left far behind for the time being, in favour of dogs and other, stranger things.[break][break]

“We’ll be fine, don’t worry. It’s not like the murder-dogs are going to murder us.” Alba says it with all the confidence of someone doomed to have their face ripped off, altogether a little too at home in a cavern full of crystals with a habit of giving birth to physical nightmares. But hey, it takes that kind of disjointedness to be part of the organisation that invented the Genesect Warcrime Project, right?

she hopes, oh how she hopes, that they just end up running into more birds. she's not a hunter or a tracker or anything of the sort so she doesn't notice the signs around them - ambient sounds of fauna dwindling until they die, disturbed flora from a recent tussle.

there's a reason amulius is her ace in the hole because he notices something's off and stops her before they get too close to the giant mound of fur cast in the shade of a palm. rough snores blow dirt away from its muzzle. it has a wound on its side that's been licked clean and now it rests, more than likely exhausted after a fight.

she freezes and slaps her hand like a fish out at alba to get his attention.

"well, there's your dog," she whispers. "aaaaand you're going to get closer to it, aren't you?"

There it is. It looks so peaceful, sleeping there, though the battle scars tell a different story. Whether it's to avoid being eaten, or because it seems cruel to wake it up, they'd have to do their work in hushed tones.[break][break]

…Though maybe ‘they’ should actually be ‘Alba’...?[break][break]

Stoutland does not seem to appreciate the cavern beast being called ‘your dog’, huffing in protest at the turn of phrase until a hand reaches over and scratches the back of its neck.[break][break]

“What? Yeah. The closer I can get, the better I can take a look,” Alba whispers. “You can stay here if you want, just keep an eye on it just in case.”[break][break]

Judging from the fact that he's already creeping towards the dog, he doesn't look like he's going to be dissuaded.

at least, at this point, parker knows what to expect out of rocket scientists. there's a zero percent chance she's going to be able to persuade him that maybe territorial, rabid, angry pokemon that probably shouldn't exist down here aren't supposed to be fucked with. and gods know she wouldn't be able to argue quietly.

so she shares a look with amulius and she creeps closer, giving alba enough distance so she doesn't encroach on any Important Scientific Studies, but close enough where she can be spurred into action if the thing wakes up.

"okay," she whispers, "it does actually look kinda cute when it's not all murdery."
