"...Yeah."
You perk up a little. It's not so bad, right? You've got Pokemon. You've got friends. Sure, things might be bad now, but that won't last. It'll turn around. You've just gotta keep it up until it starts getting better.
"See you around, Parker."
You've managed to salvage this goodbye, if only a little. At that, Parker makes to leave, likely to go catch up with Naomi. Good for her! Meanwhile, you wait around for a bit, giving her plenty of time to get far, far, far out of earshot, until she's so distant that even the echoes of your voice will never reach her.
And then, you drop the act.
"Fuck." You slam your fist into the cave wall.
"FUCK." And again.
"FUCK." And again.
"FUCK." And again.
"FUCK!" And one last time.
The bandages around your fingers are torn and stained red, but the pain pulsing through your arm barely registers. Your temper... It just keeps getting worse and worse. Everything that you failed to process while you were stuck in the Medical Bay has fully registered in Area Zero. Everywhere you go, you're reminded of what it cost you to lose an unwinnable battle. The faces of those who took your arm just keep showing themselves, keep acting like you deserved to suffer.
You don't. YOU DON'T. Arceus knows if anyone deserves to suffer, it should be you, but you don't!
"Fuck...!" And an encore.
There's no nice way to put it: You're genuinely going insane. Not that you were "all there" before, but this? You're not just fraying, you're coming apart at the seams. It feels like you're one bad day away from unravelling in your entirety and doing something that you'll regret. And if that happens...
You try and imagine what your world would look like without Lulu Flint, without Grigori Sokolov, without howard slayte. Then--
FEAR RIPS THROUGH YOU LIKE TREMORS THROUGH THE EARTH. INVISIBLE HANDS GRIP YOUR BODY, REFUSING TO LET YOU FLEE. IN THE BROKEN EXPANSE OF YOUR MIND, A NIGHTMARE REVERBERATES INTO FOREVER.
YOU WILL DIE OBSCURE AND ALONE AND FORGOTTEN AND ABANDONED.
...No. That wasn't... Couldn't be, right? No. No, it's impossible. It... No.
Like an earthquake, the sudden overwhelming fear comes and goes in the blink of an eye, and the blood dripping down your arm is now joined by cold sweat. Your legs feel weak. Your vision is going blurry. Your heart is pounding so hard it feels like it's going to explode. You need... You need to do something else right now. You need to leave... Now.
