A RUINED CITY IN ULTRA SPACE. It is unclear whether this is a different universe's Ultra Megalopolis or smaller colony. Regardless, it is a dark city with intermittent sections of flickering, artificial light... Large, black prism-like skyscrapers loom above flat black streets. Much ruin has fallen here, but you get the sense that you're not alone...

It had been months since she visited the city. It was shrouded in just as much mystery and foreboding energy as last time. But a lot had changed since her last visit; between her growing bonds with other Rangers and her stronger dedication to becoming a stronger trainer, she felt far more equipped to tackle Megalopolis. More recently, her shadow Toxel had evolved overnight, and while it'd been odd, she was glad to have him here with them now as his electrical charges created a decent glow for the dark gloom of the area.

"Thanks for coming so last minute," she said. She had requested a visit to the city after leading Gwendolyn Conway down to the deep sea had worked out well. This place had always evaded her more than the sea or the border, and she wanted to put her nervous feelings about the area to rest. "I heard you're a gym leader. You better watch out; I already signed up to challenge my home gym in Dewford. I'll be coming for you before long!" She jabbed a confident thumb to her chest and gave him a grin. She marched forward in the direction of a large, crumbling wall that no longer had a building to support.

his sneakers thud dull against the obsidian expanse of the city. the darkness is overwhelming here. suffocating even. so, when robin's TOXTRICITY emits its bright light, noah's heart fills with quiet gratitude.[break][break]

as robin marches forward, the wall spits further crumbs. it lurches and before it can fall onto robin or near her, noah's URSHIFU is quick to manifest.[break][break]

Urshifu protects her from the crumbling wall, but Robin recovers from the sudden scare quickly. "We'll make it outta here, just you wait and see." She jabbed a thumb to her chest. "They didn't promote me to cadet for nothing!" She proudly bore the cadet armband after graduating from the rookie one. She intends to say more, but the hissing fills the air. She instinctively crouches a little, then looks all over. Their cover just crumbled, so where is the threat...

A trio of unusual pokemon that appear to have missed the circus in town are coming right their way. Did they see the Leaguers already, or were they making that sound for fun?

"Never seen one of these," she mused as she took a few absent steps closer, drawing a pokeball. She doesn't think she's lucky enough for a combatless capture, but it's worth assessing the behavior of these pokemon, so she impulsively tosses it at the closest one, which stands a few meters ahead of the two behind it.

The pokeball bounces helplessly behind it, a missed shot, but the blacephalon reacts violently: its head tumbles as it lights up, the hissing hitting a crescendo, and explodes. Fireworks erupt, filling the sky with delightful colors that remind her of summer festivals besides Gwen...

though robin may marvel at the confetti lights, noah can see no romance in their brilliant, vivid menagerie. he runs for robin. arrests her hand before tugging her away into a forced sprint.[break][break]

like a balloon, the blacephalon's head reforms.[break][break]

noah's urshifu roars, warning the shadow toxtricity as another head explodes. the other two blacephalon prance about, tossing their heads.[break][break]

"that thing's killed so many of us, robin!" noah says. "we gotta go!"[break][break]

from alleys, crazed megalopolans begin to emerge like drooling larvae from blackened honeycombs. explosions erupt around robin and noah. blinding lights and searing flames mar their path. each detonated head turns into bursting rainbow swirl cake with all the ensuing colors cascading around them.[break][break]

"i swear, man. if you catch one and bring it to our gym battle..." noah says. half-jest. half-serious. his urshifu strikes a swathe of zombie-liked megalopolans away as he searches for an escape.[break][break]

The firework blasts of Blacephalons breathe a terrifying life into the city's broken, decaying bones. The city is artificially alive, possessed by the sudden activity, and Robin catches only a glimpse of what it might have looked like in the moments between detonation. It's a good thing Noah's dragging her because dead things have always transfixed her. He pulls her into an alley of suicidal party streamers, and it finally occurs to her that all the seeing is the problem.

"Lights off!" Toxtricity does his best to lessen the electricity flowing through him, but there's noise and chaos surrounding them and that's precisely where he wants to be. The explosions make his heart race better than any adrenaline, so she gives up the losing battle and forcibly returns him to his pokeball. She throws out Sinistea instead. "We need to get distance, fast." Sinsitea chimes her assent and floats through the alleyway buildings. Robin doesn't know where she's gone exactly, but she makes sure to hold onto Noah tight.

"She's gonna switch us around -" Robin's poor explanation doesn't give much warning between Sinistea activates ally switch, transporting Robin and her held Noah to the very place Sinistea had been.

It's gentler than teleportation, in her opinion, but she's still disoriented as she looks around. They're in some building with a busted elevator. Robin takes a breath, letting her stomach settle. "I guess this works for a hiding spot." She hears the chime of Sinistea approaching the building from the streets, perhaps escorting Noah's Urshifu to where she'd quickly placed them.

while robin may be enamoured by the dead, noah is anything but. the ALLY SWITCH offers swift solace and subsequent dysequilibrium. he clutches his chest as if to keep his organs in order.[break][break]

"for now, yeah. smart move." noah catches his breath. lungs pulse like toxicroak sacs as his back presses against the wall. [break][break]

his urshifu kindly opens the metal sliding door for robin's sinistcha. although it is no longer automated by motion, it glides well enough on obsidian tracks.[break][break]

"i've heard of this place." noah pries himself from the wall as they enter. "looks like a silph co. building don't you think? like all business."[break][break]

the first floor opens to a sleek reception area blanketed in dust. though much of it has been disturbed by previous adventurers—it is clear that the brave souls that had ventured here were not of the custodial kind.[break][break]

a broom clatters to the ground from a door he opens. [break][break]

"if this place was actually cleaned up, it'd be pretty sick to work in."

Noah looks a little ill, but Robin's sympathetic. Ally switch used to cause her headaches like all psychic moves do, but she's grown a little more tolerant to it after using it so much. "If you gotta hurl, just... do it out of earshot." She looks to be teasing despite the more serious tone.

She follows him through the decrepit building. It seems to wheeze periodically, kicking up dust as the walls appear to almost lean outwards like an exhale. It would not surprise her. She had been to the Ultra Deep Sea, and something about that place seemed to thrum like a heartbeat. With all she's seen, the building could absolutely be alive. "I don't know if I wanna work where there's a lot of vandalism," she comments thoughtfully as she stands before a semi-intact wall with an odd mural.

Some large creature is descending upon a city. The skyline kind of looks like Megalopolis, if you squint. The odd, half-awake but inebriated stagger of the few people who walk this city don't seem motivated enough to leave a mural like this. She doesn't know how to date the art, but if it isn't old, it has to be left behind by a Ranger or someone else who snuck into the area. "If I'm working anywhere unusual, it's definitely The Border. Those spirit marchers are super cool, even if they get mad when you're in their way."

The overwhelming spirituality of that area was a thick, suffocating blanket, but it had a pleasant warmth to it that kept Robin thinking of it fondly despite almost dying there twice. "But hey, if you wanna move on in here... I'll hold onto your gym for you." She offered him a sly grin, though she had not put any thought at all into the possibility of being a gym leader in minor or major league.

though losing his lunch did not cross his mind, robin's jest of a suggestion lines his gums with the brief warmth of nausea. he swallows it down. shakes his head like a paintbrush loosing excess pigment.[break][break]

the mural stands before them. an ominous painting that resonates with hoenn's history even within this extraterrestrial space.[break][break]

"necrozma..."[break][break]

his train of thought is broken by robin's free-and-easy spirit. the border had been an intriguing site to explore; however, noah's last visit had been a violent, terrifying test of wits and survival.[break][break]

"hah! are you interested in becoming a gym leader?" noah asks. "actually, that reminds me... i was on a mission with a ranger recently. she mentioned a robin. i think gwen was her name? know her?"[break][break]

the tower stirs. his urshifu sniffs the stale air. the lights—whichever ones remain unbroken—whisper invisible signs of coming back to life.

Noah uttered something looking at the mural and, automatically, Robin responded, "Bless you."

She blushed at his question. Did she want to be a gym leader? It was a huge responsibility. She would be responsible for staying in one place more than she did. It was kind of terrifying, the prospect of actually putting down roots. "Erm, it's a possibility..." She struggled to think of something to say until he mentioned Gwen. She perked right up.

"The Gwendolyn Conway , Master of Technology and Remedying Soups? Why, yes, I have heard of her." Robin gesticulated wildly as she gushed, "She's the bestest best friend ever. She helped me when I was super sick and totally on death's door. That soup, by the way, utterly incredible. I think if Rocket knew about it, they would lay siege to like, everything, to get it. Um, she's got this Magneton that's super cool; she was totally heading in this tech direction and maybe even being a professor, but like, she hung out with freya morningstar and became a huge dragon nerd recently."

Robin had mixed feelings on the dragon thing, but she was glad Gwen was finding some confidence. "Gwen's literally the greatest. You're very lucky to have crossed paths with her. She's super sweet and thoughtful and always down for an adventure. She's, um, really special." Robin felt flustered at the end, failing to think of another word that could describe her best friend better than special.

The lights flickered sharply, casting a burning (and unflattering) light in the building and outside of it, illuminating the streets as if it were a sunny day. Her stomach dropped at the sight through the busted windows in the lobby. This building was a lighthouse and the Blacephalon armies outside were lost ships at sea just dying to, er, pop their heads off and explode...

noah didn't sneeze. or did he? gaslit by his own conscience, the gym leader wrinkles his nose. between his fingers, he rubs the megalopolis dust he had swiped off slumbering walls.[break][break]

robin's gushing of Gwendolyn Conway could be enough to wash all the cobwebs away.[break][break]

"yeah, i was pretty lucky wasn't i?" noah says. he drifts into the romanticism of it all. its song, its season and gale. "but you're the luckiest of them all, robin."[break][break]

noah's urshifu growls. the lights flood into the tower, purging all darkness. the blinding deluge is matched with a soaring chorus of crazed aliens.[break][break]

"oh fuck, shit and balls," noah says, eyes winced like faulty blinds. he grabs robin's shoulders to comfort her—or perhaps to ascertain her presence through the sensory overload. "the tower's in the center of the city... they'll be coming from all sides. we gotta fight through them, okay? my urshifu can lead the charge."[break][break]

the lights remain on full blast.[break][break]

his urshifu kicks open the door. a WICKED BLOW launches several intruders back, allowing the bear space to charge into the megalopolan mess of it all. like carnivorous ants, they swarm the ursine fighter.[break][break]

She wasn't following his comment at first, but then she burst into a big grin. "Yeah, I am the luckiest! We're a dream team." She and Gwen had been through countless troubles, but they always came up on top.

She blinked owlishly as he slapped his hands on her shoulders, sounding tense as he assigned a new plan of action: get the hell out of dodge. "Er, ok! Let's go!" She followed him and Urshifu as they cleared the crowd. She saw a few Blacephalon approaching from the side. She tossed Toxtricity's pokeball their way. "Tox, use psychic noise!" The punk rock pokemon aimed to overwhelm their hearing (and hopefully avoid their heads falling off).

"We're almost there," Robin said excitedly. The riot around them really made her want a picture -- chaotic selfies tended to stress Gwen out, but they were also really fun to take and really fun to laugh about when the two Rangers got together. Robin would explain the situation and defend her selfie decision and Gwen would give her the disbelieving eyebrow.

Quietly, she pitched: "Maybe a quick picture before we totally get outta here?"
