nabi suddenly drops both her treecko and torchic plushie. her cyndaquil grabs them and shuffles them to the side, away from her wobbly feet. "you know what we need? more shots!" she decided and dashed back to the bar while cian tried his luck for the final plush. before returning, she had already downed her glass.[break][break]

"for my hero," she offered him the shot glass. "now, win me that mudkip, and i'll do something good for you, too!"[break][break]

and what would that be exactly? well, cian would just have to find out, wouldn't he?

as nabi runs off to get them more shots, cian bends down briefly to help her cyndaquil shuffle the plushies to the side. he gives it a boop on its nose for a job well done.[break][break]

the final push will take a while, he thinks, as all the machines have reset to their original state of 'haha try again suckers' where it'll take a ton of credit to get the claw strengthed again.[break][break]

when she returns, he's already looking at her with a bright, dumb smile brought on by alcohol, certainly, but also by her company.[break][break]

"how long do you have?"[break][break]

quick to down the shot, he places the glass on the control panel and focuses. maybe there's a way to cheat the system.[break][break]

ah.[break][break]

subtly, he calls out his pincurchin that immediately sticks itself to cian's leg. he looks down at it, then whispers:[break][break]

"fry this thing for me, please."[break][break]

it does just that. the machine is zapped, and the claw's now tight as hell.[break][break]

the mudkip is won.

"i have forever and ever," nabi claimed, not really understanding herself. she focused her attention back on the crane machine, eager and strung on liquid courage.[break][break]

she was not, however, expecting the heroic gym leader himself to turn to less noble methods. her eyes widened slightly at the sight of the pincurchin, its needles just asking to be poked by a curiously drunken girl, but she witheld. with a little bit of zappy-zap energy, the crane is in their favor, and the final mudkip joins her rank of hoenn starters.[break][break]

"ahahaha!" nabi blurts as she hugged all three plus her cyndaquil in her arms. "feels gooood to break the law, huh, cici?" she chimed.[break][break]

she wasn't sure if it was her announcement that drew attention or the pincurchin's suspicious activity, but regardless, sights were on the pair now.[break][break]

"you two!" a security guard yelled out, baton pointed at them.[break][break]

"shiiiiiit, we gotta ruuun!" nabi then exclaimed, hooking an arm around cian an dragging him to literally anywhere but the entrance of the arcade, which would have made much more sense for a getaway.

what started out as him attempting to shush her from announcing his crimes to the world ends with a single profanity that sums up their situation. rustboro's weather gym leader caught attempting to steal a plushie from a local arcade. that can't be the end of his story.[break][break]

his mind races.[break][break]

his body follows.[break][break]

"—wah! wait, not that way!"[break][break]

even in his tipsy state, he knows the only way out of this place is through the same way they came in. with his arm looped around hers, they flutter through aisles of flashing lights, twisting and turning to no avail.[break][break]

the guards were on their tail.[break][break]

"i could fry them..." he whispers to nabi.

the idea of frying the guard to a crisp appealed to nabi more than cian would know, but she shook her head aggressively. "i don't wanna go to jaaail," she whined to him. then again, it wouldn't be her fault if the guard were electrified on the spot... it'd be his! hm, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea.[break][break]

nabi could feel the space in between her arm and her assortment of baggage loosen. she was losing her grip on something. "wait!" she shouted when the treecko plush dropped to the ground. she tugged cian back and unlocked herself from him.[break][break]

as her hand reached toward the treecko, the guard made his approach, now with a growlithe by his side. he said an order of sorts—nabi didn't quite catch it—but the growlithe was now on them with bared teeth.[break][break]

the little cyndaquil in her grip squirmed out and jumped forward, tiny hands held out defensively to protect her trainer. "that's it!" nabi swiped her treecko plushie and said, "SMOKESCREEN, poppy!"[break][break]

the black fume spilled into the arcade, causing others nearby to cough and complain. "let's go!" she whispered to cian, her hand somehow finding his in the darkness.

engulfed in a SMOKESCREEN, cian scrambles to gather his bearings only to feel her hand around his, tugging him in a direction which he assumes is away. he can only hope it's freedom.[break][break]

"go, go, go," he mutters under his breath, giggles escaping with every step he takes. it's such naive and innocent fun but it feels fresh; exactly what he needs.[break][break]

to his surprise, they find their way out of the arcade and back onto the streets of rustboro. some bystanders turn and look their way but he pays them no mind.[break][break]

"we gotta keep moving!"

It could have been the alcohol or even the adrenaline, but Nabi felt light on her feet and completely enamored by Cian's equal enthusiasm. It was unlike what she had experienced growing up in stiffy households with strict rules and expectations. If anyone was asked to report what they saw, they would have described a pink-haired girl with the grin of a child plastered on her flushed face.[break][break]

"Where are we going?" Nabi asked Cian after pacing through the streets and a few turns. She didn't even realize she was breathing heavily from the running.

by the time they finally slow down, the alcohol's started to fade from his system, though enough lingers to still color his cheeks pink.[break][break]

Finally, when they came to a stopping point, Nabi fell to the ground to catch her breath, and in the midst of her gasping, she couldn't help but laugh along with Cian. "To be fair, I've never been a good girl," she retorted with a cheesy grin. At least, that's what all the adults said. Bad girls like Nabi didn't go around stealing and getting herself into fistfights. She liked to think she was a little better now.[break][break]

"I'm sure there's a journalist out there that would love to report that the Rustboro Gym Leader is meddling with thievery," she teased. She lowered her voice as her breathing steadied and her chest wasn't heaving as much. "Here."[break][break]

She tossed him one of the plushies—the treecko—and said, "A reward for all your work. You can keep that one."

"I'm giving it to you cause I like treecko the best," she replied. "Now whenever you see it, you can think of me and all of our fun memories together."[break][break]

The pulse of her heart returned to its normal pace, as well as her breathing. Though her cheeks still glowed a faint pink from the alcohol, the adrenaline and their running seemed to have flushed out the impurities. It was a rather a successful drink for Nabi.[break][break]

And then she suddenly felt awkward. What now? It had been too long since she had socialized with someone like this, since she had messed around and caused trouble. Her uneasiness surfaced in the way she put some distance between them and avoided making direct eye contact.[break][break]

"Well," she said, voice drifting. "Thanks for a good time. I promise I won't burn anything again." She found herself lingering, unsure how to end a conversation or say goodbye without simply just running away.
