So far, the second trip seemed to be easier than the first. It helped that the two of them had some bearing of the place, having navigated some of the platforms and bridges on their previous venture, but it didn't do much to stop the vertigo that began to creep up every time they crossed from one rocky plateau to the next. Eddie was thankful when he saw Beau pause, stopping to put down his pack and check out the map of what they had surveyed so far, [break][break]

“Well, since we don't got any of those damn ghouls tailin' us at the moment, how about we stop and set up camp? Set us up a home base to come back to while we're out here.” [break][break]

Eddie took off his own pack, unclipping some hooks that held the roll his little pop-up tent was housed in, but he paused a moment to fish around for something in his rucksack. With a triumphant 'ah-ha!', Eddie produced a small baggie with a grin and tossed it to Beau, [break][break]

“Brought some stuff ta snack on!” he explained as he began to put the tent together that, as it turned out, was probably going to be too small for him, “If ya don't like teriyaki, I've got some hickory-flavored jerky, too.” [break][break]

The Tauros at his side, who had been watching his trainer begin to unpack his things with only vague interest, snorted incredulously. [break][break]

Eddie had managed to get the tent well and properly set up, eyeing his work with satisfaction as he grabbed the other bag of jerky from his pack and took a bite. An errant chill raced up his arms, the hairs raised as he broke out into a fit of goosebumps. Huh, that was weird; it didn't feel that cold, [break][break]

“Sounds good to me,” Eddie called back, chewing on a bit of jerky thoughtfully. A warm fire sounded so cozy right about now, “Hell, I figure it might. That's how that kinda thing works in the movies, right?” [break][break]

It probably wasn't smart to apply movie logic to a place that posed some very real dangers, but hell, it's not like Eddie had any other point of comparison. He stooped down to shove the rest of the jerky back into his bag, only to catch a flicker of movement out of the corner of his eye. [break][break]

Standing back up, he noticed something dark pooled on the ground, warping and stretching as it danced across the rocky soil beneath him. It took Eddie a moment to realize exactly what it was, and even longer to realize that the shadow that was meant to be stretched out from under his feet had gone rogue. The inky blob sliding across the ground reformed into his own shape and waved at him with surprising congeniality, [break][break]

“He's gone AWOL, I think.” [break][break]

Another oddity of this place, Eddie thought, but not one he could do anything about. He waved back at the penumbral figure, only for it to flip him off in reply, [break][break]

“Hey, you rude little fucker!” Eddie barked with frustration as he stomped over. [break][break]

He tried to crush the shadow beneath his heel, only for it to dart away. Despite the featureless nature of the slippery silhouette, Eddie was convinced that the thing was delighting in this new game of shadow tag, [break][break]

“Get back here!” he fumed, stomping after his shadow only for it to dash away the moment he got close, “The hell do you think you're goin'?!”[break][break]

Eddie wished his own shadow had been polite enough to just vanish without any kind of fanfare, because this game of chase was really starting to wear him out. He stopped, panting with exhaustion as the shadow bowled over in pantomime laughter, and Eddie wiped the sweat from his brow as he considered Beau's offer of assistance, [break][break]

“I'd appreciate it,” he admitted with some frustration. [break][break]

Eddie watched as Beau circled around the platform, the shadow still far too distracted by it's own mirth to notice. Perfect. The older man lunged toward the shadow, sending it darting away with glee as the game began again. It glided across the ground with ease, only to jolt as Beau leapt into it's path. [break][break]

Now it was Eddie's turn to laugh. He could have sworn he almost heard a palpable yelp from the shadow as it darted back to him, sliding under his feet to return exactly where it belonged. Eddie strode over, shoulders still shaking as the laughter subsided to chuckles, and clapped a hand onto Beau's shoulder, [break][break]

“Nicely done!” Eddie beamed. He turned back to where their supplies sat nearby, “Need me ta help ya with yours?”[break][break]

“Well alright, let me at 'em!” [break][break]

Eddie was ready and willing to give the other man's shadow a run for it's money, but his bravado fizzled out as he watched Beau lift his pack and reveal the spectral Skitty. It's soft, heartbroken cries melted his heart into a weepy puddle behind his rib-cage; the poor thing was obviously lost and left behind while the other spirits of this place journeyed towards their eternal rest, [break][break]

“Poor thing,” Eddie sighed sadly, frowning as he looked the little cat over. [break][break]

He glanced from it to the floating spirits overhead and back again. Was there any way they could send the critter on their way? It probably wouldn't be as as simple as just, like, lifting the damn thing towards the whirling sky-bound specters. Eddie puzzled over this, brow knit tight with concern, when he heard the lowing of his Tauros behind him, [break][break]

“Not now Beau- not you Beau, the other Beau.” [break][break]

The bull snorted impatiently and lowed again. Eddie grimaced, [break][break]

“What? C'mon buddy, I'm kinda in the middle'a some-” [break][break]

Beau the bull's patience wore out before his trainer's did. Eddie yelped as he felt bovine teeth grab him by the back of his shirt and pull him away, back towards the center of the platform, [break][break]

“The hell do ya think you're doin'?!” [break][break]

With a fling of the Tauros' head, Eddie was sent sailing back, skidding across the dusty soil when he landed. He groaned with discomfort (there were definitely a couple of pebbles digging into the meat of one of his arms), but pain gave away quickly to surprise when he opened his eyes to see a pair of spectral legs standing before him. [break][break]

Eddie yelped, scrambling back to put some distance between him and this new entity. Oh God, was this another one of those ghouls from their first excursion? He had to make sure this fucker didn't get anywhere near Beau- no, the guy, not the Pokemon; Eddie really didn't want that kid taking off into the mists again. Eddie rushed to his feet, and only then did he fully grasp the nature of the specter that stood before him. [break][break]

The transparent figure of an old man ambled close on uneasy feet, bowled over and leaning heavily on a cane. He began to fall forward as one foot caught a rock, loosing a ghastly cry as he stumbled. In spite of his better judgment, Eddie rushed forward to catch the ghostly geriatric before he fell, [break][break]

“Whoa! Easy there, gramps.” [break][break]

The specter clutched his arm for support, cold and clammy against his flesh. Somewhere behind him, Eddie thought he heard the Skitty mewl louder. Maybe the two knew each other, as strange and improbable as that might seem. [break][break]

As the mewling Skitty leapt down and bounded towards Eddie and his ghostly companion, he felt icy digits grip his arm a little harder as the spirit leaned against him. Grandpa looked about ready to keel over for a second time as he tried to rush forward unsteadily to meet the feline halfway, but Eddie was quick to keep up with him because ghost or not, Eddie knew his mom back in Paldea would send him to the afterlife if he let the old man take a tumble. [break][break]

The old man pulled away just long enough to hold his arms out wide for the cat to leap into his embrace. Eddie watched with some amazement as he heard the man laugh, a hollow but cheerful sound, as the Skitty happily nuzzled his cheek, [break][break]

“Huh, I think yer right.” [break][break]

It was nice, though, watching such a happy reunion. The two didn't linger for long, though; with a wave from a man and a final delighted cry from what Eddie assumed was his final companion in life, the figures shimmered brightly. Their silhouettes slowly dissipated into indistinct shapes of eerie blue-ish light, before trailing up and away to join their brethren in the skies above. [break][break]

Eddie watched their ascent thoughtfully. Would there be anyone at his side once his own soul embarked? He briefly turned to look at his Tauros, then back up at the sky again, and frowned. The bull in question returned to Eddie's side as he turned back to Beau the man and shrugged, [break][break]

“Not the kinda spirits I was expectin' to run into out here, 'specially after last time, but hey, I'll take it.” [break][break]

Eddie staunchly refused to consider the strangeness of the day so far, at least until he had something more substantial than a couple of bites of beef jerky on his stomach. He returned to his pack and began to search through it's contents once more, [break][break]

When he looked up, Eddie hadn't expected to see the shimmer in Beau's eyes or the soft smile he wore as he too watched the spirits ascend. Maybe he should've known that the guy was a sensitive sort considering their first trip out here, but the sight of it still stoked a fond warmth in Eddie's chest, [break][break]

“Hell yeah!” he called back happily as Beau went to rummage through his own things. [break][break]

Without the fearful specters of their first visit doggedly pursuing them, the remainder of the day(?) felt like a childhood camping trip. A roaring fire did wonders to stave off the spectral chill that persistently clung to the air, and Eddie had even had the foresight to bring hot dogs to roast over the flames. It was nice, really; good food and good company were about the only things Eddie needed to be truly content. Even as spirits still whirled around in the air above them, it was the farthest thing from his mind as the hours slipped away from him, until sleep was ready to seize the both of them. Distantly, as his mind drifted towards the realm of slumber, Eddie hoped the rest of the expedition would be this nice.
