How were they able to set up such an impressive base so fast? The DRK TRIAD had technology most people in HOENN could hardly dream about. Audric Black supposed he shouldn't be too surprised. The fact that it wasn't concealed beneath some sort of invisibility field was a surprise to him. Both he and Jack Napier could see it clearly from the ridge they stood upon.[break][break]

"You ready?" He asks the other young man, casting an unsure look at him. The CHARCADET standing beside the RANGER seems more determined than both of them combined. "You ever... done this sorta thing before?"[break][break]

The members of the DRK TRIAD were just people, right? What if someone got seriously hurt?

He was standing here, gaping into the dark, this time accompanied by a particularly-white lightning cat.

(For he had a feeling he would need the Zeraora’s help in more ways than one.)

“What, going in unannounced and just wrecking shop?” he would muse out loud; while his thunder catto purred low, a dangerous warning sign to anyone who would dare approach them.

He’d seen just how fast this particular Pokémon of his could go, and he wouldn’t put it past… whatever lurked down there to attack them.

They were definitely going to need all the firepower they had on their side.

“Well, there’s a first time for everything, right?” he would crack a few moments afterward, stretching his arms above his head and shaking his head to get the tension out of it.

There was a lilting call that would echo throughout the space—but it sounded so… distorted, so alien and strange… it was like…

What else was waiting for them out there?!

Audric sighs. It seemed Napier didn't understand what he was trying to get at it. But, then again, the ranger wasn't exactly being forthright with it either. He couldn't blame the other. So, ultimately, he just nods. "Yeah. That."[break][break]

He wasn't all that worried about firepower. BOUDICA had proven to be quite the little spitfire despite her diminutive size. He supposed she might have picked up that talent for destruction from the BLACK MARKET he'd rescued her from.[break][break]

"Let's head down. Quietly, though..." The HOLONITE continues, leading the way down the canyon path as they head towards the black base in the distance. Unbeknownst to them, several UNOWN stalk them from the shadows nearby...[break][break]

“You heard that,” he would rumble in the Zeraora’s direction.

“No wrecking shop unless we’re jumped on!”

Little did they know that they were going to be followed by several ‘more’ sets of eyes; all of them Unown that had blended into the darkness and were staring at them like literal living security cameras.

(Because that’s what they were!)

The Zeraora would take the lead this time; while he would follow not too far behind.

“Makes you kind of wonder, though… why they’re staked out here in such an inhospitable place,” he would muse a few seconds later; but in a quieter voice.

“Oh, and—you can call me Jack.”

There, at least they weren’t going to be awkward anymore!

The same strange, alien noise from earlier persisted… was it like a mating call of some sort?! He would put that question in the back of his mind for later.

It did, indeed, sound like some sort of mating call. But, frankly, it was hard to tell. That sound was just as alien as the monsters that inhabited AREA ZERO. Perhaps it hadn't been a mating call at all. Perhaps it had simply just been a call.[break][break]

"As much as I'd love to investigate that, we need to get out of this with our lives first," He whispers, cautiously taking a gander at their shadowy surroundings. "From what I've heard about the DRK TRIAD, they take a pretty methodical approach to things. Not unlike most scientists." The biologist adds, casting a look down at his Charcadet with a worrying thought.[break][break]

Was her flame too bright?[break][break]

"They're probably just here to—"

And, just then, the two realize why the DRK TRIAD base was likely out in the open with no concealment: it was a trap. A trap for unwitting LEAGUE personnel such as themselves. The HIDDEN POWER that strikes out from the shadows hits Boudica and knocks her off into the bushes before several more UNOWN appear above them. They're surrounded.[break][break]

They quite literally fell for the trap hook, line and fucking sinker—

However, what the Unown did not realize was that they were dealing with a Zeraora who was blindingly fast—before some of the letter-shaped Pokémon began throwing balls of water (Hidden Power) after the Charcadet!

“…we fell for it, huh?!” he would exclaim, his eyes quickly looking around while his Zeraora sprang into action; because they were jumped on!

“Go, go!” he would urge the thunder catto on, and the white blur got to work; quickly firing up their Plasma Fists and smacking the closest bunch of levitating letters they could lay their paws on!

“See, the funny thing is—” he would trail off a few moments later before even more Unown started showing up.

“…why set out a trap for us if we’re not that special?!”

Though fear immobilizes Audric for a moment, flooding his mind with thoughts of becoming an interdimensional prisoner-of-war, seeing the ZERAORA strike away with its PLASMA FISTS snaps him out of it. The fight wasn't over yet! And, if he needed more reassurance from that, Boudica would soon leap out from the bushes to strike at several Unown with a FIRE SPIN.[break][break]

"I— Boudica and I will keep moving towards the base! Do you think you can handle things here?!" Audric asks over the cacophony of HIDDEN POWER blasts and electricity. When one stray HIDDEN POWER nearly takes him out, however, he decides to simply run off towards the intended target with his partner instead.[break][break]

The few Unown that dare chase him and Boudica are struck away with ASTONISHING attacks by the latter. "Nice going, Boudi!" Audric cheers as he runs through the woodlands.[break][break]

He thought he felt the ground rumbling—however, he put it off to the Zeraora who was literally zooming around like a wild pinball with their fists always crackling with electricity; lashing out and smashing into Unown that dared came across their mighty presence.

“You be careful! I’ll—rather, we’ll hold the line!” he nodded before the Charcadet had managed to get up and was now on the offensive as well.

Back over where they were, this time there would be incoming clods of dirt—as the Zeraora was unintentionally pulling a lot of the ire on them; the Unown would switch accordingly and lash out with another version of Hidden Power—this time, clods of dirt and stone!

“Oh, don’t think we’re just a one-trick pony,” he grinned like a deranged maniac as this time, the thunder catto came out screaming with a Dragon Hammer attack towards the attacking horde of Unown!

The EARTHQUAKE that strikes threatens Audric's footing. Despite that, the ranger manages to keep himself upright as he reaches the black base on the other end of the woodlands. Just then, however, a stray HIDDEN POWER manages to strike his shoulder. Boudica rushes to his side as he drops down to a kneel with a pained grunt, but the Holonite shakes his head.[break][break]

"I'm f-fine! Take a torch to that place and let's get out of here!" He says, pointing at their intended target. With a silent prayer that there weren't any people inside, Audric watches as his Charcadet launches a LAVA PLUME upon the building. As the walls ignite, crumble, and burn, however, he doesn't find anyone inside of it.[break][break]

Was the base abandoned long before they got here? Was it only ever a trap? Or had the DRK TRIAD simply teleported away? Regardless, the ranger breathed a sigh of relief and staggered back up on both feet as the base became a bonfire.[break][break]

He was not made to be a killer.[break][break]

Not today.
