The troop of BRUTE BONNET were patrolling an area dangerously close to their LEAGUE ENCAMPMENT. Despite the danger, however, Audric Black is having an absolute delight observing them from afar with a pair of binoculars. "They're traveling in near-perfect formation... like Spartans! Every flank is covered. They leave no room to be exposed!"[break][break]

The HOUNDOOM sitting on its haunches beside him doesn't seem nearly as excited about it all. Nevertheless, Audric turns to it and his partner for this endeavor with a smile. "Guess we gotta interrupt their little patrol, though, right? Want to take the lead on this or should I?"[break][break]

AZ EXCURSION C: CULL THE HORDE[break]
INTERDREAM MIST AND THE ACTIVATION OF TERA CRYSTALS summon an aggressive army of PARADOX POKEMON. Upon spawning, they rampage and stampede through AREA ZERO. It is likely that if these hostile Pokemon are allowed free reign that they would escape the caves, the chasm, and ultimately invade all of Hoenn, disrupting the ecosystems to an irreparable degree. “We can gawk at them later, you realize they’re headed this way and we’re the only people left to… well, protect what’s left of this outpost!” he remarked as he squinted into the distance.

While they were indeed marching like a well-timed phalanx, fact of the matter was that they looked like… geez, what was up with these Pokémon that resembled the currently-existing counterparts anyway?!

“It doesn’t help that they kind of look like the suspicious mushrooms from Unova…” he would add as this time, he was accompanied by a Kommo-o who looked ready to tussle.

“I have an idea,” he would continue as he tilted his head towards his Kommo-o, “…however, it would involve a pair of earplugs. Do you have any on you?”

The wildlife geek sighs. "Alriiight. They do seem related to AMOONGUSS, though, don't they? Perhaps an ancient relative?" Though he had heard rumors that PARADOX POKEMON weren't exactly... relative to their world.[break][break]

As soon Jack mentions earplugs, Audric chuckles as he reaches into his jacket pocket. "After our last little run-in with that SCREAM TAIL, I sure do." He responds, taking his earplugs out and placing all but one of them on. "What's your idea?"[break][break]

“Yeah, those… even the name is suspicious, and I mean that for the actual Unovan version that exists right here!” he added with a cackle.

Now that they both had earplugs, he would fish his own pair out and pop one of them in, before turning to see the incoming phalanx of Brute Bonnet (not that he knew what they were called) before his Kommo-o flexed their fists.

“Okay, so since they’re hyperfocused on marching this way, we can catch them by surprise with his loudest attack. That would be either Boomburst or Clanging Scales, you take your pick,” he began as he laid out the quick, rudimentary ‘counterattack’ plan.

“Then, while they’re all confused and trying to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, well, if your Houndoom’s up to it we can smoke them out and away from here so we can call for reinforcements to rebuild the base after we secure the area.”

Did he just draw on years of experience herding sheep with that tactic? Who knows?!

“Did any of that make sense?”

Audric ruminates on the plan for a bit. They lacked so much data about these BRUTE BONNET... could they really expect to herd them this way? Would they react as they thought they would? At the end of the day, he supposed they would have to fight them one way or another. So why not try this way? With a nod, he responds. "Got it. SHEBA and I will put ourselves in position."[break][break]

With little else to say, the ranger moves to occupy some cover behind some bushes and trees. His Houndoom joins him, of course, and together they wait for the troop of BRUTE BONNET to patrol right past them. "Just a little bit more..." Audric whispers, watching with widened emerald hues as they march onward.[break][break]

This was now just as nerve-wracking as it was exciting, but he was beginning to grow used to that feeling.[break][break]

Hopefully, they would be able to isolate at least one of the mushroom-looking Pokémon and bring them back for further information and studies—the eggheads in the Pokémon League’s science department would always go ‘ooh, shiny’ whenever anything strange or fascinating coming from this place was brought up to their little hidey-hole labs.

Now that the two had separated for the moment, he would look over at his Kommo-o, before popping in the second earplug and then mentally crossing his fingers as he made the clapping gesture—just like they’d practiced.

(Because the first few times he’d done this, without earplugs might I add, he’d gone temporarily deaf for a few days!)

It wouldn’t take too long before the first of a series of Clanging Scales would ripple through the area.

Even with the earplugs in, he could still feel the sound waves rippling across the surface of his skin as the Kommo-o stomped forward; eager to meet at least one of these strange things in ~~mortal k~~combat!

Audric, too, remembered to place on his second earplug now. The time was near... pretty soon, Napier would summon his KOMMO-O to step forward. And, sure enough, it did. With a CLANGING SCALES it drew the ire of the entire troop.[break][break]

Having successfully captured their attention, Audric was unsure whether they expected the entire troop to go and meet the Kommo-o in combat. But they did, casting SPORES and RAGE POWDER in the air as they advanced to try and THRASH the dragon. Audric and Sheba, of course, took that as a sign to intervene.[break][break]

"Blind them with SMOG!" The Holonite commands, watching as his Houndoom spews black smoke out from her maw. A SUNNY DAY emerges to try and break through this choking smog, but fails to do so. The formation of BRUTE BONNET break, and are soon forced into retreat with a raging INFERNO.[break][break]

The moment the loud sounds that his Kommo-o had caused sufficiently caught the suspicious mushrooms’ attention, he knew he had to move fast.

(Okay, wait, which one of the two abilities was it again?!)

Crossing his fingers, he then watched as the horde—no, stampede of Brute Bonnet headed their way; but he knew the Kommo-o had a way of dealing with them—another loud, rippling Clanging Scales attack would send them into disarray; while some of the mushroom-like Pokémon… were they Pokémon? Maybe—would lash out with alternating Thrashing attempts or, worse, firing up a Solar Beam since it was now a one-charge, one-blast attack!

“Yikes!” he would yelp as the Kommo-o waited for the flames to start surprising them from the opposite direction.

They needed to isolate at least one of the Bonnets to haul them back for further study…

The BRUTE BONNET would soon emerge from the SMOG, sparkling with PROTOSYNTHESIS when the sunlight touched their thorny petals. "Fascinating..." Audric remarks under his breath, a smile spreading across his face as he watches them.[break][break]

When he turns to find Napier standing there with his Kommo-o, however, he is reminded of their secondary objective: to isolate one of the BRUTE BONNET for study. "Sheba, go— THUNDER FANG that one!" He orders upon finding a BRUTE BONNET that has strayed in the opposite direction of the group.[break][break]

And the Houndoom would do just that, leaping towards the target in question before pinning it down with a PARALYZING bite. Audric hurriedly takes off his earplugs before calling Napier over with a wave. "This way! We got one! Help us contain it!" He exclaims, hoping his plea is heard before another CLANGING OF SCALES.[break][break]

All that remained was the trouble of transporting it to a proper cage for further study.
