Eddie had been kinda surprised when the employee at the reception desk let him enter the Safari Zone with the exotic Gouging Fire at his side, but he'd been rather wearily assured that stranger creatures had set foot in the place over the years. That was fine by Eddie, though; he was delighted by the opportunity to spend some more time with his new friend, [break][break]

“I think you'll like this place!” he called to his Pokemon companion cheerfully as they stepped through the gate, “There's all kinds'a critters here, and lots'a space ta run around and explore. Which direction do ya wanna head in first?” [break][break]

Achilles seemed to consider the question for a moment, before ambling towards a open swath of green to the west. That suited Eddie just fine as he followed behind, eager to see where the outing would take them.

The trek was uneventful so far, but Eddie watched with fond delight as Achilles took in their surroundings. A leonine muzzle sniffed at the grass, lifted up to catch a new scent on the breeze, and sneezed when a stray leaf landed on the tip of his nose. Eddie would have totally forgotten that the creature was an apex predator back on it's home turf if he hadn't seen the way the Gouging Fire froze at the sound of rustling nearby, [break][break]

“Easy, buddy, I'm sure it's nothin'-” [break][break]

The Gouging Fire pounced; the Yamask it had attempted to crush beneath his Dragon Claws just barely avoided the attack with a dodge to the side and a frightened squeak, [break][break]

“Achilles, back off! They ain't gonna hurt nobody.” [break][break]

The paradox turned back to glower at their trainer, giving the Yamask just enough time to zip away. Eddie glowered right back; the antsy bastard needed to chill out.

It wasn't long before something else caught Achilles' eye; before Eddie could stop him, the Gouging Fire lunged at something else that dashed into a thick, thorny bush, [break][break]

“Achilles!” [break][break]

The Gouging Fire pulled back to glare at his trainer again, but when his face emerged from the brush, the paradox's pointy maw held a flailing Nickit by the nape of it's neck, [break][break]

“Drop it.” [break][break]

The Gouging Fire refused and started to back away into the underbrush beyond. [break][break]

“C'mon, I said drop it!” [break][break]

Another step back. [break][break]

“Achilles, so fuckin' help me, if ya don't drop the poor thing right this god damn minute, I'm gonna wring yer fuckin' neck!” [break][break]

Before the paradox could turn tail and bolt, Eddie tossed a Safari Ball at the fox to try and free it from the creature's grasp. The poor thing probably couldn't handle being taken for whatever ride Achilles had planned for it.

With the Nickit safely stowed away, Eddie was now left to chase after the Gouging Fire that had charged off into the wilderness beyond, [break][break]

“Achilles! Get back here!” [break][break]

Oh God, the Pokemon was way faster than he was. Eddie stopped, panting with exhaustion as he leaned against a tree. At this point, he wasn't even sure which way the paradox had gone, so he took a moment to get his bearings while he desperately tried to catch his breath. [break][break]

It was in that moment that Eddie realized he wasn't alone. On a nearby tree stump sat a Mimikyu, clothed in silvery white, watching him with curiosity, [break][break]

“Hey buddy,” Eddie wheezed. He took in gulping lungful of air before continuing, “Ya seen a big fuckin' cat thing run this way? Giant crest on his head, likes McPognald's burgers like ya wouldn't believe.” [break][break]

The Mimikyu seemed to puzzle over this for a moment before a shadowy hand emerged from under their handmade disguise, pointing off towards the north, [break][break]

“Hey, thanks!” [break][break]

Eddie was about to charge off again until that shadowy hand reached over to tug at the hem of his shirt. He stared down at the little ghost, who had somehow managed to sneak it's way over to the large shadow pooling under his feet, [break][break]

“What, ya wanna come with me?” [break][break]

The Mimikyu nodded and reached for one of the Safari Balls at Eddie's waist. Huh, this was probably one of his easiest captures yet.

With another new friend in hand, Eddie charged back off after the Pokemon he'd started this whole adventure with. Fortunately, the Mimikyu's directions were actually quite helpful; after a few minutes of dodging trees and nearly tripping over gnarled roots, Eddie caught a familiar flash of brown and red through the thick underbrush, [break][break]

“Achilles!” [break][break]

Reptilian eyes flicked back to regard his trainer before the paradox darted away again. Eddie groaned with frustration as he started to follow, only to almost step on something small and hard underfoot, [break][break]

“Oops, sorry, little guy!” Eddie called to the Seedot he'd nearly flattened before he dashed off again. He couldn't afford to stop if he wanted to catch up to the Gouging Fire any time soon.

By the time that Eddie's lungs felt like they were going to collapse, he finally caught up with the Gouging Fire, cornering another poor creature near a jagged, slate-covered hillside breaking through the trees, [break][break]

“Achilles, *wheeze*, buddy, *wheeze*, ya gotta stop-” [break][break]

The Gouging Fire looked over it's shoulder to it's trainer with confusion, as though it's bullying of what turned out to be a poor Shieldon were the most natural thing in the world. And perhaps it was, Eddie realized as he desperately tried to catch his breath. Achilles was used to fighting for it's life back in the Chasm it lived in. Maybe it was only natural that he should seek to hunt when easy prey was so commonplace. [break][break]

Eddie chucked another Safari Ball to spare the Shieldon of the paradox's further wrath, and frowned at Achilles while he waited for the capture to complete, [break][break]

“It doesn't hafta be like this, yanno.”

Achilles stopped, turning to fully face his trainer. Eddie's shoulders slackened; maybe the paradox would finally hear him out, [break][break]

“Yeah, you heard me. Ya don't gotta fight for your damn life, like any second's gonna be your last.” [break][break]

He approached the Gouging Fire, extending an arm forward, palm facing out. Achilles watched with some interest, but there was still a cold edge to those prehistoric eyes that belied the creature's skepticism, [break][break]

“I can keep a roof over both'a our heads, put food in our bellies. I'll look after you, and you're gonna look after me. And ya wanna know why that is, Achilles?” [break][break]

The paradox's eyes narrowed with suspicion, [break][break]

“Because we're friends.” [break][break]

Eddie reached over and gently patted the Gouging Fire's flank, ruffling the fur there, [break][break]

“And friends got each other's backs. And friends also call each other on their bullshit, like you tryin' ta murder half of the god damn Pokemon in this place.” [break][break]

Maybe Eddie had finally gotten through to him, he thought, as he watched something in the ancient creature's expression soften. While Pokemon possessed great and fantastic powers far beyond human comprehension, the one thing this human could offer in return was comfort. Companionship. Luxuries not found in the savage wilderness, [break][break]

“So you don't gotta go runnin' around tryin' ta eat anythin' smaller than you just 'cause ya can. We can get outta here and get ya some real chow instead, and we can have a nice run down the coast ta work off a good meal. That sound good ta you?” [break][break]

Perhaps that would be enough to sate Achilles for now, Eddie hoped, as they began to make their way out of the Safari Zone. The Gouging Fire certainly seemed more relaxed now as he strode alongside his trainer on their way out; unfortunately, it also made him less vigilant, and was therefore startled uncharacteristically when a lupine face suddenly popped out of a nearby bush. Eddie couldn't even fault Achilles for swiping a DRAGON CLAW at the little Riolu when he saw the way the Gouging Fire's fur stood on end. It was hard to keep his laughter down as Eddie tossed a Safari Ball at the fainted Riolu, [break][break]

“Maybe ya shouldn't relax that much, buddy,” he teased as he grabbed the capsule. [break][break]

That was probably the wrong thing to say, Eddie realized, when the Gouging Fire began to charge off into the wilds again with a prideful huff. The trainer groaned, burying his face in his hands, and with some exhaustion, wondered how long he'd have to spend chasing the paradox Pokemon around the Safari Zone this time.
