a creaking door signals old hinges and her arrival, an underscore to the familiar melody of keys giving way beneath the pressure of fingertips. and while she might have announced herself, the subtle shift of an unfamiliar pressure does it for her.

her heels fall silent once she stops in front of his desk. hovering is new for her, perhaps, but there's a distant look in her eyes that makes it feel practiced, precise.

behaviors new and old manifest in different ways. fernando’s eye seems fragile compared to yesteryear, glazed with a soft wetness that reflects the small text of his screen. it closes, when she walks in, resting for a moment as focus are given to mid-sentence thoughts. and, after a moment too long to be a blink, but long enough to be noticed, it reopens.

his only consistency is ignoring her, or rather whoever would enter, in lieu of his work. only when he feels her shadow looming over him, from an angle unexpected, does he look up.

his gaze is weary and unimpressed. as if expected. as if this were no more impressive or different than any normal day.
