“No—no, ma’am. These are not ear drops.” She insisted for what felt like the hundredth time. “They have to be given orally for them to work.” Again, there was a slight look of befuddlement as the woman took back the prescription. Her Whismur just continued to quiver. A gentle hand lifted to the elderly lady’s elbow as Aubre gently tried to coax her outside. “You know you can always call me. I’ll answer—” What a silly promise to make.

Normally the pinnacle of patience, Aubre was surprised by her urge to go home. But her parents arrived tomorrow. And she hadn’t hugged her dad or mom in almost two years. The last thing she wanted was to screw things yp.

But the questions continued. The automated light in the other examination room clicked off behind her. “Wait, are you sure it’s just an earache?—” The client continued in a whine. Of course I am not 100% sure something else is going on. You asked about her ears. But it’s so—the likelihood it’s anything else is so low it’s almost negligible.. And, yet, Aubre looked the Whismur over again.

Finally, she guided the fretful trainer out the backdoor. She traded the white jacket for a much more ambiguous hoody. Her hands underwent scrub-up for what felt like the hundredth time. As she exited the staff area, she was surprised to find she wasn’t alone. Not because Alastor was there of course. He was always here. Right now, he was tapping out a message to the other person.

Aubre’s eyes widened as she caught the screen. “!?” The Heliolisk and her locked eyes for a moment. You better not send that. The normally doleful gaze said. Blue eyes rolled as the lizard hit backspace a few times. His sour expression received a huff from his trainer. Locking up was his job. He'd probably been watching blind box videos again.

Turning to the other person, Aubre put on her best customer service smile. Which, in all honesty, wasn’t too good. She was a terrible liar. “Can I help you?”

to say that lisette handles spontaneity well would be a lie. her occupation forces her to roll with the punches, but when given a chance, she is someone that stands still in the face of change. less of a ducklett letting water run down its back, and more like a pyukumuku who has resigned itself to being moved by the world, rather than moving through it, itself. [break][break]

which is all to say, she has no idea what to do about the espathra that had gotten in her path just earlier. quid pro quo: lisette's gothitelle had done away with a swarm of ariados, allowing lisette to capture the wild spiders in the name of team rocket — not realizing that in doing so, she had saved the life of an espathra that the ariados were toying with. [break][break]

now this fantastic bird won't leave her alone. clearly, this is the work of a malady or sickness. why should a wild pokemon be so enamored by a stranger, otherwise? they don't even know each other; lisette will never understand such sudden kindness. [break][break]

"hello," miss bellamy says in reply. "this espathra is sick." she waves vaguely in its direction. the ostrich trills happily at being acknowledged by her. "do you know how to fix it?" [break][break]

The Heliolisk at the front desk loops up. Prim ivory claws tap away at the keyboard. His baby blues peer occasionally at the girl and her technicolor ostrich. Again, he shoots a message over to his trainer in the back. ‘I’m like 95 percent sure there’s nothing wrong with it.’ The bird seemed happy and not in a creepy way.

His chat bubble catches her attention. Shifting her gaze from her Chatot patient to the laptop, she quickly taps out a response. ‘Not all problems are visible, Al.’ The lizard’s shrug emoji ends the conversation. After discussing the bird’s dietary issues, the redhead sends the flying-type on its way. With that done, she gets the room ready for the next Pokemon.

‘Winner picks lunch tomorrow.’ Her Heliolisk is quick to respond. By the time she sees it, the deal will be sealed.

With a click, an assistant pops her head out the door and calls Lisette and the bird back. When they arrive, Aubre is trashing an antibacterial wipe in a steel bin. In place of her typical translator—a hot pink Jumpluff—a Blissey stands with flippers in pouch. As the pair enter, the doctor smiles. Don’t mention the time. It’s not their fault.

A scarred hand emerges from the pocket of her lab coat. She offers up a sweet poffin to the psychic-type bird. As it (hopefully) enjoyed it, the doctor would turn to Maisie. “Well, that depends on what’s hour with it.” There was a small pause as she contemplated her words. “What’s wrong with it.” Skilled eyes swept over the lanky bird’s form for any sign of distress or injury. Though she saw some spider webbing—and a bite or two—it didn’t seem to be affecting the bird at all.

“Can you tell me what brings you in today?” Oddly enough, the doctor's eyes stay on the bird as she speaks. The Blissey begins to circle the Espathra like a shark. Her own checkup is brusque but just as competent.

the clinic is alive in its own way. between waiting to be called into a room and the banter between the presiding pokemon, lisette wonders if this isn't as much of a home as it is a place of business and convalescence. she wonders what it would be like to have pokemon who are so lively with one another, as the chatot and heliosk are with each other. [break][break]

eventually, she is brought before the doctor herself, and holds a breath as the espathra is appraised. the pokemon doesn't fuss under such scrutiny, and even happily eats the poffin offered before it. so bright and lively. are all pokemon this... tiring to be around? [break][break]

"what?" lisette blinks widely. "oh, um..." she thinks back to the ariados incident. "well. there were a lot of spider pokemon in the way. i think the espathra had been in their clutches." maybe the arachnid poison had gotten to the bird's head, after all. "it won't leave me alone. maybe it's delirious? i'm not sure." [break][break]

on second thought, maybe lisette should have brought the espathra to a pokemon whisperer. or maybe she has already brought her to one, so it seems. [break][break]

“Good, huh?” The Espathra’s beak tickles the doctor’s palm. Emerald eyes meet its dull ones. There’s emotion in them, but it’s not fear or unwell. She smiles. “One more won’t hurt.” A blue one is quickly dispatched as well. But two is all that appears. Too many sweets could upset the bird’s belly after all.

As Lisette spins her tale, the doctor nods. “Ariados?” With all the war injuries she’d been dealing with, this almost felt like a return to form.

She leans in for a close-up look at the flying-type’s iris. But there’s no discoloration, a telltale sign of certain poisons. Bitten nails pick out a bit of webbing as she gently explores the bird’s feathers. The woman keeps her eyes out for any sign of a bite. Her lips purse into a thin line as she explores the muscular bird’s entire body. In the end, she didn’t spot any signs of poisoning. “It doesn’t look like they bit her.”

The woman’s description of symptoms seemed a bit strange. But it could be a sign of delusions.

Aubre’s eyes met those of her no-nonsense Blissey. She was best described as an old German nurse. The thing apparently agreed with her assessment. The Ariados had attacked the bird but hadn’t managed to hurt it. There’s a thoughtful pause as Aubre turns to face Lisette. “Did you save her?” The question seemed kind of silly. It wasn’t like the woman had left the psychic type there and gotten followed all the way here. “I’m guessing that’s why she’s here now.” Tiny hands moved to scratch at the area where smooth skin met neck ruff. A favorite spot for the empathetic Pokemon.

“I think she’s trying to thank you.” The doctor turned to look into the thing’s stunning sapphire eyes.
