the days following a certain date at the beach, kyle would find matias on his home rather than elsewhere. perhaps it's the calm before the storm, but he finds his presence where he's supposed to be reassuring.

he comes in without warning, opening the door to let him and his dog in. matias most likely already knows of his presence the moment he set foot in his ranch anyways.

"hello. you look good."

the short greeting seems cordial enough to mask the true nature of his visit, which was to be matias' warden during his time under league's orders to be under supervision.

"i'm surprised you're content with just sitting around now."

where else would matias be? nowhere, because he's a good person who adheres to the rules given to him.

just kidding. he's only at home because he'd been out the day prior and he doesn't want to run the risk of sneaking around too much. the surveillance in place is decent enough and he's sure there's only so much they could excuse. kyle just happens to come around at a convenient time.

he smiles at the short greeting.

"you look good too."

as kyle always does.

"can't do much else without alerting the league. they're so paranoid, honestly."

he sighs.

"did you miss me? is that why you're here?"

"have you thought of training a dog?"

like most of kyle's ideas, everything he suggests, bar the ones for missions required for his job, appear to be random passing thoughts that come out of his mouth unfiltered.

he already brought his growlithe though, signifying that the thought has evolved into something more.

"i mean something that isn't entirely for battling but--"

kyle leans down and picks up the dog, dangling the growlithe in front of matias while its tail wags, ignorant of the fact that the man in front of him has killed pokemon for mere points during conflicts with rocket.

"--something like a pet."

how random indeed. but he has come to expect as much from the top champion.

"i've trained many dogs."

but as the growlithe is held up before him, presenting its wagging tail, he understands that kyle means something different when they say training.

his eyes narrow at the dog.

"you know i don't do pets."

his expression remains the same, not yet smiling as he shrugs a shoulder.

"i guess it's cute."

"it has to be lonely being with your thoughts the entire time."

matias was, for all intents and purposes, jailed in his own property. internet access might be there, but he doubts that matias is the type of person who can actually spend hours in front of a monitor.

kyle turns to his ranch, where his other pokemon reside. he's seen how he treats them, but makes no effort to comment about it. forcing ideals shared by their swords of justice on matias will just bring the opposite result.

"you can't really do the same rambles with your other pokemon either."

he whips back to matias.

"it's easier to start getting used to it with a dog. what do you say?"

that's partially a lie. it's difficult for him to filter which thoughts are his own and which are influenced by external, otherworldly factors. it's easier to assume they're all his own, ridding him of the need to filter them altogether.

he avoids kyle's gaze and focuses on the dog instead. he's not unfamiliar with the breed, only the level of interaction and care kyle's expecting him to give it.

this wasn't meant to be for his personal use anyways, though he was the one who trained it with the most basic skills nonetheless.

"he was trained for police duty, but i thought i'd snag one for you just in case you're interested."

by this age, doing so was outdated. someone who calls themselves a trainer can have their pokemon do precise tracking, explosives detection and other things k9 units were trained to do.

still, it was a fun thing from the past to continue doing.

"i usually let whoever gets paired with them pick the name in advance. it's easier to get attached that way, you know, when the name is something you gave."

it would have been much easier if the growlithe had come with a name, more so if it was one kyle had picked, but he supposes he can go through the trouble of naming it himself. it might help with creating a bond, as kyle mentioned.

he peers down at the growlithe and tentatively offers it his hand to sniff.

"and what if it doesn't like me?"

kyle scratches it behind the ears, helping it ease into giving matias' hand a sniff. at the very least, it's not the foot that the groudon avatar is offering for the dog.

"there's no point if we have to force it to like you anyways," he tells matias. "that'll just be bad for both you and the dog."

not that he doubts the growlithe will reject matias, but it's better to give matias the out if he ever wants to. kyle did push this dog to him without asking him beforehand.

the growlithe goes for the hand and sniffs.

maybe the growlithe is the same. should he be playing coy, then? but it seems the growlithe is doing just that with how slowly it sniffs his hand, the little bitch.

"fine. i'll take it."

without warning, he reaches and picks up the growlithe, carrying it so its back legs are dangling. he looks at it, then flips it around to kyle.

"meet matty."

he raises a brow, unsure if matias was serious or not. as much as he can read matias accurately to some extent, it can go either way.

"the moment you give that dog that name, no one's going to be able to use that as a nickname for you," he explained, uncharacteristically bothered.

kyle was the type of person who gave up on nicknames on pokemon eventually, nor was he the type to call people with nicknames. the best he can do was a shortening of a given name, which matty was.

"...unless you actually want to be compared to a dog."

matty. he can hear it said so clearly by Elisabeth Fiorelli as though it were only yesterday when he first heard it (it wasn't, but close enough).

like a dog sniffing out a buried bone, matias scratches at the surface of kyle being bothered; an unexpected reaction but not all too odd.

"why haven't you called me matty yet? is there another nickname you prefer for me?"

"it feels... weird?" he says, upfront and without filtering his thoughts. "it's feels like the kind of nickname i would give a dog, but not another person."

he has given nicknames to people with a mouthful of a given name, such as fernando and melody, but shortening their names to one syllable doesn't feel like it counts. outside of those, he doesn't really use any unless it's a moniker like navy or florist.

on the other hand, matias does have the tendencies of a dog.

"do you want me to call you matty?"

kyle turns to the dog, seemingly confused by the exchange. he will eventually get his name, but he supposed it's still under deliberation at the moment.

he turns to the door outside, which was left open. too embarrassed with how personal the topic was going, he watches matias' pokemon that display earth eater, arena trap, sand force, sand stream and levitate outside his ranch.

"m-m-matty."

kyle turns back to matias to watch his response, but pinches the bridge of his nose as he anticipates the silent excitement he's about to show.

"if you're going to be matty, then this growlithe can't be matty. please pick another name for it."
