there's no denying the flutter in his heart even though he knows he's just being goaded for a reaction, one he so easily gives as pink colors his cheeks. he turns away, obviously, because he won't be seen looking embarrassed yet excited.

he clears his throat.

"i'll find something else. lopez junior, maybe."

but that might feel like a mud-slap to the face, so maybe not.

"but thanks, kyle. i'll take care of it."

he knows matias won't run the growlithe to the ground as fodder for his battles this time. confidence, rather than ego, gives him faith that this will be one of the few stones that will snowball to an avalanche later.

"i'll check up on that dog later this week," he tells matias. "i can take it off of you if it turns out you can't bond with it."

the words frame a threat, but the intent is clear when it comes to the top champion.

kyle crouches, whistles a certain note that matias would be familiar with, having heard it multiple times in battle by his side. the growlithe is beckoned by the sound and approaches kyle, who then rewards it with a pat on the head.

"i'll kill you if you actually name it lopez junior."

a week is more than enough time for them to know whether there's a bond between him and this dog. if there isn't, then there's no point trying to force it.

hearing the familiar whistle, matias attempts to do the same only for it to come out sounding flat and out of tune. he'll have to work on that, too.
