"...right here in this portion of the mirelands, next to Lake Valor was where the Diamond Clan settlers made their encampment," Yuina continued, pointing out a specific point on a rendered map of what the Sinnoh Region was said to have looked like centuries and centuries ago.[break]
It was after hours, no more visitors or guests were going to come through, but she still spoke softly, quietly, careful to not let her voice carry. No need to let any of the night guards or lingering professors hear her prattling and think her delirious...[break][break]
"The rendering shows their settlement too far south, only because that's where this leather pouch belt with their emblem was recovered... I lost that debate that day," Yuina huffed, a small pout as she pointed out the artifact in question. Everything she did had to be based in fact... She couldn't very well come out and say that she herself was the fact of the matter. Sometimes it was rather frustrating...[break][break]
"But, because I was able to correctly make the translations on an older journal map, Ursa's Ring is depicted in the right spot," Yuina nodded, a smile as she pushed up her glasses on the bridge of her nose with one hand, the other intertwined with Doug's as they stood in front of the next exhibit piece she brought them over to. If her eyes could truly sparkle, they were shimmering brighter and brighter with every passing moment. She had to expend so much effort to depict her work as theory and proven fact... It was a nice change of tone to be able to talk about her work for what it truly was... Memories...

Rewriting History

Perhaps the clearest sign of his genuine love for Yuina was the fact that she could talk about ancient tentative™ history, inside a dark, empty museum, for several hours, and still make him cling unto her every word as if for dear life.

"Woah..." She was so... smart and scholarly. Looked the part, too. He laughed. "When ya said ya worked at a museum, I think ya might've undersold yerself."

That was on him. He wasn't smart or acquainted enough with the scene to picture anything beyond an adorable museum tour guide.

She looks so happy.

Ba-dump.

Perhaps speaking about her research made her feel closer to her forgotten past. Or maybe she was just happy to be able to speak freely without being thought of as a looney.

Ba-dump.

Or maybe she just enjoyed talking to him.

Ba-dump.

Or maybe... Dear god, he couldn't think right while she was looking at him like that. Would it be rude if I kissed her without warning?

"I, ah... I didn't know know you wore glasses, by the way." He said after a moment, scratching at his reddening cheek as he gave a small smile. "It— they look really good on ya."

There was a pause that Yuina took, looking at the large map, eyes tracing various paths over the landscape, various places that she remembered. The beautiful rushing water of the Obsidian Falls, the quiet snowfall of the Alabaster Icelands, crossing paths with Daikenki for the first time in the farthest reaches of the Sandgem Flats...[break]
She blinked though as Doug spoke, she'd been going on for a bit now, taking them to a couple of her exhibits, they hadn't even gotten to her favorite one yet. This was the first time that he was actively seeing her work, not just hearing about it. She smiled, looking out to her new wing of the museum, all of the work that she had done and knowing all of the work that was yet to come.[break][break]
"I'm only just getting started too... There's so much history, so many things about Hisui that I can't wait to show everyone," Yuina returned, she was beaming, she was putting as much effort into her research as she was her ranger's work. She never did anything halfway, even if her work wasn't entirely full of truth. She did have some resources that tipped the scale in her favor.[break][break]
Standing there, turned a bit towards him, he mentioned her glasses... She hadn't even realized. She was there in the museum, surrounded by her work, they'd met there after the doors were closed for the day and she was finished. She had just, not transitioned from being at work. She blinked down, a bit sheepish, glasses sliding down her nose a bit.[break][break]
"Oh, I- uhm, they're for reading, I-," but he stammered, only slightly, scratching at his blushing in the cutest way that she'd already grown fond of. Even as much as she enjoyed it when he became flustered and blushy, she couldn't help it in her own features as pink brushed beneath the frame of her glasses, blinking up at him.[break]
"Thank you... I'll keep that in mind," she returned, a bit of a knowing glance, a small, wry smile, before she blinked away, looking out to another piece.[break][break]
"The Pokeballs are over here, they're really something else."

Rewriting History

He pursed his lips, squinting at her. "You... will keep it in mind."

He echoed the words wryly, the red on his cheeks deepening.

He had revealed a weakness and it would apparently be ruthlessly exploited.

How wonderful! I mean, horrible. Yeah. Totally.

He was all too eager to grab onto the olive branch she extended next.

"Oh!" He uttered with perhaps a little too much surprise.

He cocked his head, staring at the balls.

"... Huh. I have one of these." He said simply, scratching at his cheek with some mild confusion. "I didn't know it was a hisuian ball."

It had kinda just... come into his possession, recently.

"Thought it was some shop's specialty item made or somethin'." There was no shortage of small TRADITIONAL STYLE POKEBALL manufacturers, after all.

For the people who preferred wood or berry covers to the efficient plastic of FERNANDO SILPH's productions.

The exceeding minority willing to pay premiums, at any rate. They were certainly not pokeballs the dregs of society totted about anymore.

Which made one wonder how Doug came upon one.

"So... I'm guessin' you've remembered a lot." He said after a moment, turning his gaze over to the entirety of Yuina's exhibit. "Is it... everything?"

Leading Doug from one exhibit to the next, Yuina smiled still, coming around to the Pokeballs that she had started working on. They were only replicas, and she had more that were in the works from the different varieties that she recalled, but the schematics and all of the details were as accurate as they could be.[break]
Wait, what did he say?[break][break]
"You do? Which one? How long have you had it? Can I see it sometime," she was elated, she knew that it wasn't out of the question that objects came through to the otherside of a given distortion. She wanted to see it, maybe authenticate it, she wouldn't take it from him, but... It was just exciting to know that there was another piece for her to take a look at.[break][break]
Doug took a pause though, glancing around to her exhibit, her work, her memories... And she too looked around at his question, it was always difficult, the idea of memories, remembering... When there was still so much that she didn't...[break][break]
"I don't know if its everything... but its enough... To make it feel real, to make it feel like its a part of me...," she returned, distant, but thoughtful, her eyes glancing out beyond her exhibit and back to that far away place.[break][break]
"I remember learning how to forge the Pokeballs, and gathering the tumblestone outside of the village. And watching that tatami painting hang from one of the shop fronts, after it had just been finished...," she pointed across the way to a large hanging tatami piece, a painting of a blossoming pink flower field.[break]
"I remember how... quiet everything was, how simple it all seemed, just the village and its people, listening to the river water flowing through the middle. Or how beautiful the plains were, untouched, undisturbed by anything because there was nothing, no one to interfere..."[break][break]
"I remember encountering Basara for the first time, he nearly killed me when he felled a whole tree in one swing. And Nyla was more curious than anything, even though the icelands were so far away from everything, she might not have ever seen a human before," reminiscent tears shimmered at the corners of her eyes, there were so many things that she remembered, so many people that she would never see again, places that were gone, lost forever...[break]
"...but... I don't remember why I left... or if I had the choice... I don't remember if I had a chance to say goodbye," her hand clutched his that much tighter... She blinked furiously, drawing in a shuttering breath... She wouldn't be okay if she kept dwelling on it.[break][break]
"Uhm, oh, over here, there's a map of what the village looked like..."

Rewriting History

"Back when Father Dickhead sent me on a roundtrip 'round my childhood days, so... I wanna say like, christmas-ish 2023?" Doug said, cupping his chin whilst squinting at hisuian ball selection. "Think it's... that one? Kind of. Looks a little simpler than I recall."

He pointed at the black, hefty ball. A heavy ball.

"The one I own's got tons of little details on it." He mused.

"Darn heavy thing, too. I do curls with it sometimes."

He shoved his musings onto the backseat once Yuina began recounting her past experiences, way back when. He doesn't know what tumblestone is, but the word tatami is familiar.

It isn't the only thing that sounds vaguely familiar either. A peaceful village, a flowing river, peace and beauty and an undisturbed environment.

He was taking her words with broad strokes, but it all nonetheless reminded him of his childhood home.

Even her first encounter with her Kleavor.

"They tend to do that." He said wryly, lip quirking as he brought his digits to his cheek, dragging it over his scar.

Kleavor or Scyther, some things never changed, apparently.

What was changing, however, was Yuina's voice— her voice trembling as she carried on, the corners of her eyes almost shimmering in the dark.

He squeezed her hand back, his other hand reaching up to brush his thumb against the corner of her eyes.

"Do you miss it?" He asked, brushing gently past her attempts at changing the topic.

Right, father winter... Giving her a doorway to her missed past, to a Hisui that wasn't hers, but one she would have fought for all the same. She should have guessed that there might have been lots of letters written to 'him' at the time. Didn't sound like he was kind to anyone though...[break][break]
Doug didn't interject much in her distant stream of thoughts, his question did make her wonder if she remembered everything. She tried so hard to bring everything to the surface, all of the faces she remembered, the paths she charted on long forgotten maps, more Pokemon that she would never see again. But she couldn't remember the things that truly mattered... Like how she got back... If she even wanted to leave in the first place...[break][break]
Yuina turned, an attempt to move on, she had to move on, she had no other choice... But Doug didn't move, grasping her hand gently, wiping at a tear beneath her glasses.[break][break]
Did she miss it?[break][break]
"...I do... I missed it more at first, getting those memories back, the only ones I had. I missed it like everyone misses their home or some place they had to leave behind I guess...," she spoke softly, after a couple quiet moments.[break][break]
"But it feels... it feels like I shouldn't sometimes, I shouldn't miss something that was never supposed to be mine... I wasn't supposed to be there, I shouldn't have met those people or made a home in the village," she fought herself on it often enough, a constant back and forth. She should have never ended up there, and didn't know why she did in the first place...[break][break]
"Do you miss that place that you went to," Yuina asked, she wondered. The parallels of their two far away places were staggering, did he feel the same?

He reached over to flick her forehead, solidly enough for the slap of bone on bone to reach their ears.

"Supposed to, shumosed to. The only one who can determine such things is yerself." He said, shaking off the throbbing on his middle finger. Skulls were hard. "Ya weren't supposed to be there?"

He smirked smugly.

"Well, why not?" The Socratic method could be annoying to those on the receiving end, but it could certainly prove a point.

At her own question though, he simply shrugged.

"Eh. Sometimes." He said, shaking his head. "I think about it, on ocassion. A lot less than I used to."

He tipped his head back.

"S'all about perspective, I guess." He said. "Back when I thought my life sucked, I fantasized about it a lot more."

In her wonderings again, perhaps letting the intrusive thoughts get the best of her, Yuina's cheeks grew as red as her forehead did, flustered over being flicked. Again.[break]
She reached up to rub at the afflicted spot with her hand, a bit of a pout as she glanced up to him.[break][break]
"Okay okay, I didn't mean to let the intrusive thoughts go. You might as well have a squirt bottle," Yuina humphed, it was as if he were trying to dissuade her from letting herself get lost in the intrusive thoughts by way of training her with the idea of being flicked in the forehead.[break][break]
"I just don't know why I was there at all, I guess that means I don't know if it was supposed to happen or not," she returned after a moment, and that was all there really was to it... She didn't have any more answers than she did before really, so there was no sense in trying to upset herself.[break][break]
Doug thought over her question for a moment, if he missed the far away place that he too had gone to. It sounded similar enough, the further removed he was, the less it was as prominent as it had been... Perspective as he put it was one way to look at it.[break]
She looked up at him though, his words bringing a small smile, back when....[break][break]
"Hmm," she hummed, her hand clasped in his. She leaned in just a little closer to his frame, looking up at him from behind the frames of her glasses, eyes soft.[break]
"What about now?"

Rewriting History

He leaned over to peck her forehead. "Do got one; didn't bring my case, though."

Darn, that would've been funnier.

"Eh. Why are any of us here?" He asked her, shrugging his shoulders with a smile as he leaned back against something.

He then made what he hoped was a funny face.

"No. really. Why."

It really took a peculiar sort of folk to stay in Hoenn, in spite of everything, specially when they had every means to just leave.

His hand squeezed hers, his funny face quaking and growing a redder as she leaned in ever so slightly closer, bringing those big, pretty eyes of hers close enough for examination.

He blushed, his gaze looking everywhere and anywhere.

"I... Ahem." He cleared his throat, pursing his lips as he glanced aside, cheeks red. "I don't wanna be anywhere but here. With you."

Why were any of them here? Why was anything the way that it was? A fair question... But for the moment, Yuina was forgetting herself in the implications of it all. Maybe she was or wasn't supposed to be there, standing in front of him, backed up against a pillar... But she was certainly glad that she was.[break][break]
Maybe one day she would learn not to let the intrusive thoughts get in the way, but then that would be the day he might learn that shee would always find a way to get back at him after flicking her in the head. She hadn't faltered yet, and she wasn't about to start.[break][break]
Even in the dim lighting around them, the main lights having been turned off for the night but the lower volume security lights remaining, she could see the shade of his face growing a deeper and deeper red. He was backed up against a pillar, giving her the right leverage to lean forward just that much more, giving him just a little bit of her weight. She nearly lost her composure as he cleared his throat, trying to look at anything but her, avoiding a flush of her own cheeks, it was so cute how flustered he could get...[break][break]
Yuina leaned in, tilting her head, looking up at him through her lashes.[break]
"And I--," a soft lilt in her voice, just there, right there in front of him...[break][break]
"Think it's time we head out for dinner maybe? I just have to go to my office and grab my things," she finished, standing back on her heels again and turning to walk towards her office.

"Sure." He said. "Just one more thing."

He pulled her back , his arm wrapping firmly around her waist whilst he was still leaned against the pillar, his chest firm against her back.

His lips pressed against her cheek, then the corner of her lip.

"Ah, forgot what I was gonna say. Never mind."

Round to her, she was certain, Yuina felt pretty confident about herself as she turned to walk towards her office, at minimum anticipating him to follow... Until she gasped, a short squeak, at being pulled back against him.[break][break]
She was flush against his chest now, heart thrumming at the firm hold around her waist, desperately trying to ignore the notion that she was more or less stuck there for as long as he wanted to keep them there.[break]
